airedale
A site on youtube I frequent a lot, "Day at the Range" love it because of all the rimfire videos testing various rimfire rifles and handguns. "Mr Revolver Guy" the site owner has the Fly Swatter Challenge setup for anyone with a good shooting 22 rifle to participate in for fun. I will put in the link to his site for particulars and for printable targets. This is the kind of stuff I enjoy, I hope to give it a try soon and hopefully the weather will cool down just a bit. https://dayattherange.com/?p=11278 just scroll down a little. Al Range — 50 Yards Rules Of Engagement Most important have a lot of fun Shot at 50 yards Shoot as many spotters as you like above the line. One shot per fly and you MUST have a body shot for it to count as 1 point. Complete the challenge in 5 minutes. airedale
Now that I have my range back up in operation I plan on giving this Fly Swatter Challenge a shot. I will be trying all of my Rimfire rifles and it will be interesting to see which one is the most accurate of the lot. All but one of my rimfires are set up for hunting first and with moderate powered scopes which will be a disadvantage for this particular game. The Flies are pretty darn small at 50 yards. My one true target rifle is a Winchester model 52B with a Redfield 3200 20X target scope, it is basically vintage dating back to the early fifties but can still lay them in there pretty good. It's fine accuracy is capable of clearing the Target with the right ammo. I have a couple of small things I want to do to get it to be at it's best. Have been dabbling a little bit with some of my rifles with different ammo to see what gives them the best performance and I can say that this game is humbling. Watching the plethora of you tube videos of folks taking the challenge it looks like nailing a fly total in the mid teens will be doing good. It is going to be fun. Farflung
I'm reminded of a show of the Beverly Hillbillys where Jed and Jethro are shooting flies of a wall at their mansion.
airedale
Kimber HS Hunter, come on down, you are the first contestant for the "Fly Swatter Challenge. Kimber has had the trigger adjusted to where I like it and a higher powered Simmons 6.5X20 44 mag scope mounted in place of the Nikon 3X9. Ammo is Wolf Match Extra. I could not be more pleased with this Kimber, 24 hits out of twenty five, she shoots. The trigger job and the high powered scope made all the difference. The score would not count in a real match, I took too much time as I only have one magazine and have to stop and fill the magazine. Like Rimfire challenge matches it is best to have 5 magazines loaded and ready to exchange. Magazines for this Kimber are quite pricey. Next up is the Winchester Model 52B. airedale
Winchester Model 52B, "come on down" you will be the next participant in the Fly Swatter Challenge. Did a bit of work on my vintage model 52, the trigger was a little too light so I increased the weight of pull just a tad. I was also not getting the scope aligned and back to my eye exactly where I wanted. So a pair of a little higher extension rings brought the scope back where it needed to be and at the right height for my eyes.. This rifle had a single shot style magazine installed, it was too time consuming to load one round at a time so I acquired a five shot magazine. The vintage Redfield 3200 scope is a fine and accurate piece of equipment but very slow to get focused right where I want it compared to the newer scopes of today. It took me some time to get this Winchester right but when they are right they will shoot and it is understandable why they are called the King Of 22s. airedale
Christensen Arms Ranger come on down, let's see what you got. Yesterday I shot the challenge with the little Ranger, only a score of 7. More than anything this was a case of the equipment (namely the scope) being ill suited for the task. Having only 6X the little Burris made seeing those flies tough, even though the crosshairs are fine they still covered the fly making it hard for precise aiming. I know the rifle is capable of doing better even with the 6X scope. Most of my misses were off to the left and slightly low, I think with a small scope adjustment the hits would go up. I will be giving it another go when I get a chance and see what happens. Regardless I am leaving the Burris scope on the Ranger because the theme of this rifle for my use is a light weight run and gun Squirrel hunter and that it can do with no problem.
