Putting a dummy in a tree stand during during the off season? How is that any different from when I go up there during hunting season?

I do all that in less than an hour. The amount of money you'll spend on a dummy, I'll do it for much cheaper.

I remember reading in an ornithology article to set up the dummy in a different manner, more gradual, as a sum of the parts not a person.

First set out boots, introduce gloves, a week later put pants in boots, a week later a torso, stuff sleeves, etc.

The thing that really stuck out was to of course dress the same way, replacing the "dummy" but also to introduce exaggerated eyes one at a time.
