Discing in Winter

Got a question burning a hole through my head.

 

Do any of you guys ever disc your ground on mild days in December before the ground really freezes or in February/early March when it starts to thaw a little?

 

My ground has been worked but not quite the way I want it to.  Soon I will have a disc and I would really like to disc before I frost seed this spring.  In other words, work it up
during the winter months if/when I can.  And then frost seed the newly disced ground when the time comes.

what are you planning on frost seeding, clover?

Late fall before deep frost. We've got clay here and when things start to thaw it gets real slick and plugs the discs a lot. Especially with old corn stubble. Then doing so in fall also helps dissipate nitrogen if you've got an existing non-perennial clover like red clover.

Hit it with glyphosate asap, then frost seed right over this in early spring, the freeze thaw with open up the ground for you even without discing and even with residue on the ground.  You can go back and spot treat weeds with glyphosate if they show later in spring.  This works great with clover and clover mixes.

no  I have to have the rake on for the frost heaving pops the rocks. an I go in and rake them off the surface when soil is still firm so I'm not picking up top soil with them...then I disc...smooth and rake one more time when good and dry...

I fall plow snow under, if the conditions are right.
