Baldwinsville hunter relates how 'three-shot rule' for emergency in the woods worked5 December 2010, 5:53 amThey teach you in hunter safety courses that if you find yourself in trouble and have no other means of communication, the firing of three quick shots is a good way to put out a distress call. yes we do teach it, but we also teach it is not very productive.  I am glad for this guy it did work. But it is taught as three shots then the response is two shots.  Unfortunately in most cases it is ignored as most think it is a hunter practicing shoot and release, or firing a couple warning shots to alert the aninal they are after them.  We teach to tell people where you are going to go and stay there, or if you move let someone know, and also let them know when you plan to return.  If every time i heard threeshots in the woods, I responded, I would spend a lot of time looking for distressed hunters.  Just my opinion, but I have taught the course for 25 years.  OH BTW, this method does not work well with archers either.

guys who empty the gun at a a deer rather than make a good shot. I jokingly say they are firing a couple warning shots to let the deer know they are after them. On guy I hunted with for a brief time did that and that was why I hunted with him for a brief time. The other thing we told him was he practiced shoot and release.  Shoot 4 or 5 times never hot anything.

Warning shots ;D ;D

Shoot and release ;D ;D

That's hilarious!

It would be a lot safer out there if there was a rule limiting shotguns to only 1 shell in the chamber/magazine--and it really wouldn't affect take #s at all.  Then if you heard 3 shots you actually might suspect someone is in trouble, not that they just couldn't squeeze off the last 2 before the deer was completely out of sight.

I don't even go up on the hill for just a walk without my cell-phone, and I always check the charge level before going out the door. We have a tower right across the valley in plain sight. I have some special reasons for that being a necessary safety precaution, but it really makes sense for anyone of any age. If you get into places where the phone signal is not adequate, well, so be it. Not much you can do about that. But most of the time the phone service is there and might just be a life-saver.

I don't ever want to be at the mercy of someone understanding what my 3-shot volley is supposed to mean .... lol. I am truly amazed that it actually worked this time.
