Bud caps

Since I can't hunt until late muzzleloading, I thought today was a perfect day to get caps put on the 200 spruce I planted last May. I made them out of window screen and stapled them on.

What is the purpose of this?

Hmmm, I was thinking on the lines of a Budweiser hat or something.

 

Like noted above; why do you do this, to stop critters from browsing?

It's to protect them from the deer browsing them. As long os the terminal bud is protected, they can browse away and the tree will still survive.

who did u purchase the spruce from? Did u plant them in clumps or for more for screening. Do u leave the caps on until they are tall enough not to be browsed?

I got them from a nursery in Michigan, and planted most of them for bedding areas in my freshly logged woodlot. The rest went into a tree line that was a little thin in spots. I'll remove the caps in the Spring, then put them back on next Fall. These are pretty low on the browse preference list, so they're safe when there is other browse available.

Nice. I had a crazy experience with a Bud Ice 30 pack once in Ocean City, MD with some girls from Vero Beach, FL. Probably 2005 or 2006
