lack of leaves on trees???

I was on way home from spending fourth of July upstate and as traveling down throughway near Harriman State Park it seemed like a lot of trees were not fully leafed out. 

 

Was wondering if anyone has seem this.  Looks sort of like trees in early spring when they first start to leaf and aren't completely filed out.

It could be an area infested with Gypsy moth caterpillars or tent caterpillars. That is the way the hills look in one of these infested areas.

We had some whopper storms roll through with a heavy infestation of tent caterpillars....a lot of the tree canopy is on the ground...but luckily it was darn thick to begin with due to all the rains

Many leaves here, few caterpillars compared to the last couple of years,once in a while you see a leave fall but not pieces almost a whole leave.

Apple trees are shedding small apples like crazy ,they are realy loaded this year as are the wild cherry trees. Animals will have plenty to eat this year.

We have had a few storms that took out a few trees and lots of limbs this year in the area.

 

There are also lot of pine trees that are sub-cumming this year to infestation and disease, and there are lots of pine stands in Harriman State park.

 

There are also a lot trees down along the NJ Turnpike in the central and Southern portions of it - all storm damage.

Some trees froze good this spring and lost their leaves, although it sounds like forest tent caterpillars or gypsy moth caterpillars if it's an oaknwoods
