mac
ok so we know deer die from being: 1) hunted 2) predation 3) collisions with cars, trucks, trains, etc 4) getting stuck in fences, tangled antlers 5) starvation in winter 6) disease anything else you can think of? regarding disease, what are the main diseases? why dont they have longer life spans like 10-15 years? genesee_mohican
I can think of more rare causes of death for deer: Old age, buck battles gone bad, environmental accidents like lightning strikes. In captivity they live 6-14 years. It's just the way it is.

I wonder just how many deer deaths can be attributed to direct wounding, or loss of energy going into winter due to the stress of full on pitched battles. And how about those other things like broken bones of wound infections, etc. I have never seen anyone really discuss that in terms of buck mortality rates.
