Buckmaster7600
I recently became the proud owner of my grandfathers 7600 30-06 carbine. It's going to be my next rifle build in either 338-06 35whelen or 35 whelen AI. Does anyone on here have any experience with the Ackleys specifically the 35whelen. I already have a 7600 in 338-06 and a 35whelen so I am looking for something different and I find the Ackleys intriguing but I'm not sure if it's worth it to have to get set up to reload a new cartridge if I'm not going to gain anything especially because it is an 18" barrel. Lawdwaz
I don't think you get much out of a 7600 pump gun in an ai chambering. The only ai I have is a 223ai and I enjoy the heck out of it.
Pygmy
Sounds to me like a lot of extra tinkering ( case forming, etc.) for a gain of perhaps 100 FPS.
thphtm
I have and had a number of ackley improved rifles, you are not going to gain that much,it equals about 10% more powder. You will have to spend XXX on dies ect. Plus rechambering or a new bbl. If you are just hunting with it your not going to shoot it that much as with a .223 or .243 that will be more forgiving on your arms. Buckmaster7600
My thought process is that the 35whelen AI is one of my most efficient rifle cartridges available so I thought it might shine in a short tube? I have very minimal experience with the AI's and greatly appreciate your opinions. I am really not overly worried about the performance because I don't think it's needed I just think it would be neat to have one but I don't think it would be worth it for 20fps, if that makes any sense. Pygmy
If you just want something different, consider a 9.3 x 62. Kinda like a .35 Whelen on steroids. It also is a very efficient cartridge, and cases and other components are readily available. It does give you the option of heavier ( up to 320 grain) bullets and will match or slightly exceed the Whelen( in either configuration) in ballistics for 200 to 250 grain bullets. When you tell the guys at the range what caliber your rifle is, they'll look at you REALLY funny...<<grin>>...
pistolp71
I'm a big P.O Ackley fan. Have several Ackley chamberings. In the .35 Whelen case though, the shoulder is almost non existent to begin with so the acklely shoulder wouldn't be much benefit except for a little less case stretch and not having to trim as much. You also wouldn't benefit much in velocity with the extra case capacity of the ackley because of the shorter barrel.

I have considered the 9.3x62 but I want to stay with the same parent case just incase there was ever a shortage. I have enough 06 brass to last 5 lifetimes. Jaeger
Congrats!! I think Bryce Towsley did the same to his 7600 when he "Benoitized" it into a short barreled .35 Whelen carbine. Hard hitting, fast handling. Jaeger

Jaeger I love my current 7600 in 35 whelen I think this one will get a fluted stainless barrel and have the receiver ceracoated to match. Just have to decide on what cartridge to get it in. Benoitized- I like that term.
