Chicken of the woods - tips?

Hi All,

So I've never been much of a mushroom hunter, but love to eat mushrooms and just haven't taken many opportunities to hunt for them.

While out pulling camera cards yesterday, I found this, which appears to be a nice batch of Chicken of the Woods fungus. I can find cooking tips on quite a few websites, but I wanted to ask here among the community I know (sort of) if there are things to keep in mind like look a likes, what not to do, etc.

ETA; I have no idea why the pic posted sideways. Can't seem to fix it.

Thanks in advance!

Jerry

Nice find. Yes sulphur shelf (chicken mushroom)is a fine edible. It does well sauteed in butter or olive oil. I like them alongside a nice steak!

Don't remove too much of the fungi from the log and you just might have sulphur shelf for a few years. The outer 1-2" of each shelf is tender. It gets woody towards the center.
