I have the bean plot first discing done...It will rain tomorrow so I will let the sun scorch up what I cut up and go down Sunday to cross disc and drag...should get bean mix in on Monday or Tuesday...Still shoveling rock piles...I disced around them....Going down later to shovel up a few piles....So It is at least coming along Just had a late lunch and going out to plant sweet corn...I disced that plot up again...will drag center...corns on edges to plant the pumpkins ... My wheat is growing nicely in two plots the turkey should be happy soon..They are lovinging the clover and I maintain undisturbed areas for wild plants...what a great crop of wild strawberries we have...sweet too ...every thing loves those... turkeyfeathers
Dang Growie, I need a nap just reading all the work you do on any given day. I love seeing large rock piles along a farmers field you know he's been using forever and probably his father before he. So if my understanding is correct. Frost each year will heave more rocks thru to the top ? Is this correct ? Are your wild strawberries ripe ? My last day of turkey hunting they were only flowers at the time . I need to go pick some
growalot
To a certain extent yes frost heaving pushes up more rocks each year but, you can keep it under control over many years. The farmer We bought from did very little rock work. I York rake in the spring before tilling and pick up tons of rocks. I do it this way to avoid picking up top soil Yes my wild strawberries are ripe and very good this year. F-150
Glad you were able to get out today after yesterdays mishap. I just remove the bigger rocks from farm fields that can damage equipment. A guys told me years ago there are minerals in the rocks that help improve the soil. Good Luck!
growalot
I do the same my rocks are the sharp tire slashing shale we have here... mixed with some good sized quartz....the joke with mower repair guys around here...you don't mow grass I our town you chop rocks. Thanks...not much can keep me down for long...after major leg surgery I was out turkey hunting in a garbage bag wrapped leg cast..Mr B drove me to the blind and set me up with my gun crutches and phone. I got my first climb because I could climb a ladder stand in my walking cast 7 mos later. I shot a doe that year from that climber. When I had my surgery after the dog bit off part of my pinky finger..I told the surgeon to wrap my hand so I could hold my bow..10 days later I shot, gutted ,loaded an 8pt buck into the tractor bucket by myself 1 handed...got it to the house about the time my Dad in law showed up to help.. Thank God...I don't think I had enough umph left to hang him.....I'm nothing if not determined....lol Edited June 11, 2016 by growalot
landtracdeerhunter
Real dry here. The rocks seem to come to the top, even on mild winters. I am cutting hay this week, then work the ground up for the pumpkins and radish. I noticed something jumping up in one corner of the wheat field, other day. I parked my belonging for a few to find out. Turned out to be a hen with 5 poults jumping to get at the kernels off the heads. Size of a soft ball already. Sure glad to see that. growalot
I was going to put in the lower corn today but the dryness and wind ...I'd loose half of what little top soil I have down there ...So on my...most miserable walk today, I hand picked some soccer ball sized rocks out...noticed yet another young apple tipped over..Sure enough borer worm took it out...I use Selven ...need to find something else...they attack from under the stem /ground and burrow up through the middle...Ha! not the wild apples no...the ones I actually pay for!...Then hit the garden...8, 20ft rows of corn and they didn't leave a single plant!...No tracks in the loose soil tells me that robins did it...and they didn't give 2 cents about the fake owl over seeing the garden ,the Milorganite around the plants nor the pinwheels spinning like mad. So too windy to work soil ,cut trees I will plant the pumpkins in the sweet corn plot and then make a couple of scare crows...then pray...Ya know..... acres and acres of corn the same height as mine and they have to come in and do that...I suppose I can count those blessings, they didn't snap off my pepper plants as well...that's happened in the past...
