Sitka gear

Just ordered some Sitka gear over their web site.   They charge NY sales tax.    Can they legally charge NY tax without a store front here?

From what I understand it is where the item is being shipped to that they have to charge the tax of the state. I think Amazon had a huge issue with back taxes years ago that set the precedent.

They don't need a store front - they simply need to have some sort of base of operations here. Wouldn't be surprised if they happen to have a warehouse or shipping intake location downstate.

I deal with Sitka a lot. I almost think they charge and remit sales tax for all locations that they sell to, providing its applicable.
They are a great company to work with, transparent and are 100% committed to the outdoors and conservation. While lots of companies play lip service Sitka steps up in financial support and promotion.
