growalot
Because as I sit here snipping beans, I'm listening to the tink tink tink of beech nuts hitting the picnic table ,car, and Gator....Sounds like there is going to be a good crop this fall...Ya I know it's early...but it's always been a fall indicator...pig nuts and acorns have been feeding the critters for the last week...big ones are dropping...or being dropped by the squirrels...Looks like we may have more than I anticipated. even more Hazelnuts... I have a strange acorn this year all my trees are reds...but these acorns aren't like the rest. long and narrow...kinda like a fat bullet...any clues? growalot
what we call a type of hickory here...it's a smooth bark hickory and the nuts are bitter...sorta like the difference between wht. and red oak.
growalot
Well they certainly stood out on the ground...and under the older reds that have produced acorns for several years now. hey acorns an acorn they will eat them all..Reds are the prevailing oak on this side of the valley...wht. on the other side...I think it is due to the logging that occurred in this area 100 years or so ago...either that or soil conditions.who knows... turkeyfeathers
Yup. Summer is over soon. Erie county fair started and that's my sign fall is almost upon us. Where the heck did the summer go ? Pretty soon I'll be sitting in a deer blind or stand but I'm perfectly ok with that. Freezer to fill
