I'd do the X-Bolt over the Compass, but I believe Browning only does standard length mag in 26" barrels.  I think the Compass already has its first recall.  That's been the plight of ever TC bolt gun since the Icon.

I second Eagle rider. I have two X-bolt Stainless Stalkers and both shoot great. No issues with either of them....knock on wood.

I have never had experience with either brand of rifle, but have heard good reviews of both...

As far as chambering, I agree with padre....25-06 is excellent for deer but light for elk....308 would be a good choice for deer and a better choice for elk than the 25-06...

I've got a bit of a collection- my vanguard s2 in 257wby is my go to deer gun- that's over a 243, 260,270, (had a 280), 7mmrm, 35 rem and 308. Region 8 from 10-500 yards.. and a couple of the others can shoot farther...just not flatter and with the same lack of recoil. The only thing that gives it any competition is my savage ml and you don't want to bring that in the discussion.
