Pygmy
Who uses an electric knife for fileting your catch..?? For years I have used a conventional knife and I always have taken pride in doing a clean job of fileting without wasting meat.... I tried an electric knife a few years back, but I felt I wasted too much meat... Well, after meeting a couple of friends who are very proficient with the electric knife, I have worked on my technique and I feel I have developed the skill to do a pretty clean job with the electric... And it is SOOO much faster to use, especially if you have a cooler full of panfish, such as bluegills or perch.... I still use my conventional knife if I happen to have just a couple of larger fish to do, but for large numbers of smaller fish, the electric is the way to go... hunter49
All I ever use is a electric knife. works great, if you have sharp blades & let the knife do the cutting you won't waste alot of meat. I also always trim off all the dark colored crap & the blood line found between the meat & skin after I remove the skin. When I am done I have all white meat. Some say I waste a lot but I have never had a bad tasteing peice of fish!
Single_shot
A few years ago I tried the electric filet knife and cut the fish about in half, ruined alot of panfish learning how to use it,lol. For now I use the old manual knife. I have seen guy's use them and it was fast, but oh well..someday I may try it again.
Pygmy
Don't give up, Singl Shot.. I went through the same thing..I would try it, get frustrated and go back to my manual knife... It's like any other skill..It takes some practice to become efficient.. It will pay off however, in time saved once you get the hang of it, especially if you do a lot of panfishing and have large numbers of fish to do.... If you know someone who is experienced with the electric knife, it might help to watch them in action..
Culvercreek hunt club
I have pretty good luck with mine on bigger fish but have yet to master the touch for the pan fish. The one I have has 4 blades.....2 large serrated and straight....and 2 small serrated and straight. I have only used the straight blades. Hopefully int he next couple weeks I can give it a try on a pail full of perch
Pygmy
Culver....Good luck on the perch.. Where are you planning to fish..??.. I hear the guys are doing well on perch in Seneca, whenever the wind lets up enough to fish.. In my opinion, perch are the easiest fish to do with the electric... They are my favorite..Much easier to do a clean job on than bluegills or sunfish.. Each species has it's own little differences, as far as bone structure, skin toughness etc...Once you learn these idiosyncrasies of the species, the job becomes much easier.. Doc
As long as there is electricity available, I will never clean fish without my electric filet knife! Even small panfish can be a breeze with that unit.
