I think you're right. I had "cabbage" in the back of my mind, but for some reason I kept thinking water cabbage, which I knew wasn't right. Thanks!

Just break off a leaf and smell it.... carefully. 
Definitely skunk cabbage. That purple thing is the flower and as it ripens it gives off an odor of decaying corpse. ITT attracts flies as pollinators since it’s too early for most insect pollinators.
