KEVA
I have pictures of a deer or two with these on them? Any clue as to what they are?

KEVA
Might be, but they look too glossy and all are resting on the deer.

NYBowhunter
Looks to be Horse flies, they love to bite. Ticks would be under the fur, not on top of the fur.

SteveNY
I remember sitting down fishing one day, I heard something barreling through the woods. I turn around and see a deer nearly totally covered in those flies, headed straight for the lake. This deer jumped about 8 feet out and then took about an 8 foot drop into the lake! Must have been getting killed by those flies... She was under the water for about 10 seconds before she came back up. When she did she started swimming right towards me, then she saw me and turned around and swam the whole length of the lake and up and out the other side. Pretty cool to see. Never seen anything like that since.
