The Engineer
Hello I just bought a house in Grand Gorge I think that is 4,O . Can anyone tell me about the wild life? I mostly have woods but I do have farm fields around me. I hear from the neighbors that we have bears around and I hear George's Gun store has a picture of a mountain lion in the area. Also how is the fishing in the Schoharie? Any info would really help. Thanks
hb270deermanager
You only have 4 acres its still enough to be productive if you wanna hunt it.nows a good time to scout it.Check for deer or bear sign.talk to the farmers around your property.most of all take some time to sit out there and enjoy what you work so hard for. lindyhunter
I have been hunting in Prattsville, Grand Gorge and Roxbury on and off over the last 27 years. I have returned there this year. I have personally taken quite a few small bucks in that area....spikes, 4's, and a small six. My family however has taken nice 7's 8's and even a 12. The 12 was about 30 years ago though. I have been scouting since September and got a trail cam pic of a nice 6 pointer. I have been bow hunting since opening day and finally had an active weekend. Saw four doe and a monster coyote. There is plenty of bear sign up there and bear have been taken in that area. As far as I know that area is 4R but check your map I could be wrong. Good luck with the house and land. That is a great area to have a place. When i am ready hopefully another year or 2 that will be my target location.......Oh and by the way I've never been to George's Gun Shop but the mountain lion claims have been around for about 20 years.....scaredthe hell out of me when I was a kid...LOL
meatmuzzy
I used to have a place in Gilboa. the deer hunting was very good. Ive taken a nice 8, a 7, a 6 and my first buck, a 4 pointer. Over the past few years the area has been overrun by coyotes and people. One of our neighbors sold his parcel and subdivided it and now theres hunters every couple hundred yards. We realized this and sold the property 5 years ago and bought a farm a few miles north. Ive never hunted Grand Gorge but ive been in that area for the past 10 years. steve863
I hunt around Stamford and Hobart, a few miles west of Grand Gorge. It sure isn't overrun with deer, doe permits are not easy to get anymore, and I would agree that coyotes are starting to run amuck around there. I have seen more coyotes than deer this fall. We manage to take deer every year there, but it definitely takes some work. From what I read on this site some people can pass up deer after deer where they hunt. Nothing like that around the Grand Gorge, Roxbury, Stamford areas, that's for darned sure.
lindyhunter
yes i would agree with Steve863 it will take some work and i would not pass up too many deer unless you are willing to take a chance that the deer you are passing up is the last you'll see for the season. Keep in mind that sometimes being successful in an area that requires hard work can be a lot more rewarding than hunting in an area where there are enough deer that hunters are passing them up. I left that area years ago because I wanted to hunt where there were more and bigger bucks. I am back there this year and so far I am enjoying the season better than i have in many years. Good Luck to you....If your looking for someplace to eat, The Hitching Post Inn on Rt 23 has decent food at a reasonable price.
orion
Is that antler restrictions when the new regulations take effect? I know i am by Stamford but are outside the antler restrictions.
Lexingtonlegend
I hunt in the lexington/prattsville area. There isn't farming around like back in the days but, you can still harvest a quality buck. Shoot any coyote you see. You can hear them every night by me yet, when ever I have that gun in my hand I never see one. I believe that antler restiction will go into effect next year. For now, be happy with that spike or 4 pointer. The big 8s and 10s are not as frequent as western New York. You're in the Catskills these deer are mountain tough !
