erussell
Anyone got one of these cams with the no glow IR? I see stealth makes a few models and was wondering if they work or if the deer still can see them. I got a stealth prowler xt and just about every photo at night is the deer stareing at the cam with this curious look on thier face. I hung it up at night and walked in front of it and I could hardly see it glowing and I couldnt detect even any noise so I dont know what they are looking at but if its anything its got to be the glow of the I+R. Single_shot
" couldnt detect even any noise so I dont know what they are looking at but if its anything its got to be the glow of the I+R. I hear the shutter on mine, but what about if on video mode...there has to be some kind of mechanics to that?

I hear the shutter on mine, but what about if on video mode...there has to be some kind of mechanics to that? As far as that goes, deer are proven to hear about as good and in the same range of frequencies as humans. It's actually really similar. The big difference is their ability to hear a sound a locate it, which is due to their ears (acting like huge satelite dishes that capture the sound...ever notice how one ear can rotate backwards, etc.? IR Video use is notorious for deer noticing...the glowing red blob staying on will really be noticeable to deer. Don't seem to notice it with photos near as much. So, we may hear it and just attribute the noise to general "environmental noise" while the deer hears it and knows it's coming from that black box that also happens to be glowing ever so slightly. And no glow is somewhat of a misnomer. Most of the "black flash" or no glow cams can be detected by most people at very short ranges - it is just extremely dim. Some people can even see the Reconyx black flash...it's pretty odd because some people can REALLY see it while others cannot not see it well or at all. The light wave is apparently on the edge of human capability. Black flash is generally not as bright as red IR and most right now tend to get even more motion blur than red IR because the shutter stays open longer. That is evidenced in the 2012 moultries...their new M80 red ir version has a fast fire/motion blur reduction technology, which is essentially a shorter shutter speed. The black flash version is almost the same, except they cannot offer (or will not) offer it with that tech yet. Thye M80 is notorious for having great night range...but it's also a very powerful illumination..deer really see it. You may be having that issue with your stealth. Maybe look into the Primos mount kit for $20 and set it up higher with a downward angle. Getting it out of their line of sight can really help. erussell
was thinking about getting one of these and mounting it at above head level and see how that works. Probably just educate them to look up. Edited January 17, 2012 by erussell
phade
Just get a closed circuit tv mount...like 4-5 bucks....if price is a factor. I still like the primos because it is a little faster. You'd be surprised...your cams will be noticed less when up higher. I had a cam about 10-12 feet for three months this year on a trail. I had about 360 photos and of the ones with deer (about 3/4)...only three had shots where the deer looked up at the cam. That is a far cry from setting eye level at the same site last year. erussell
could be why I only average about 30 pics in 2 weeks. Will have to put higher up and put my 8 g sd card to work.
WNYBuckHunter
I'm going to be picking up 2 or 3 new cams soon and have been doing the research on a bunch of them. I ran across the review for the Primos X cam Blackout, it looks like a really nice cam, and the reviews were great. You can see the difference between the regular Primos X cam and the Blackout at night. The Blackout's IR has a bit less range. I have seen some deals on them in the low $200 range. wooly
I upgraded the Moulies to a Primos Blackout 60 and got it hung tonight on a doe trail. If this thing is as invisible to game as it is to me, it may be the only cam I ever hang in my hunting areas. Pics look pretty darn impressive from my preliminary testing. The detection factor is what I'm hoping is equally effective.
WNYBuckHunter
I'm still planning on picking one up, make sure to post some pics from it so I can see what to expect!
