Heading down to south carolina, georgia border to do some hog hunting. I have pulled directions for 87 to 95 or 88 to 81 to 95. The directions only give a 10 minute difference I was just wondering if any body travels those routes and if they have a lot of traffic. I know 95 through washington will be busy if we don't leave early enough. I am thinking I will have to leave around 2 in the morning to beat traffic in DC. What do you guys think? The trip says 16 hours and we have to be down there around 6 thursday evening.

Just time it to get through DC somwhere between the times of 8pm and 4am and you should be good. You also want to take Richmond into consideration, as traffic gets hairy through there during rush hours. I drive between here and Florida alot and I go from here then eventually get on 81, then 70 to 270 to 495 to 95. Ive tried all the other combos between 81 and 95 and that one is by far the fastest. Just make sure you catch it in the middle of the night where there isnt alot of traffic and youll be fine.

Might want to look at 81 to 17 to 95. It saves some time dealing with DC.

81 to Winchester, 17 to around Fredericksburg and hop onto 95 from there and run down.

I actually cut about an hour off of the trip by avoiding DC.

295 goes around Richmond so you can bypass it if you time it wrong.

17 is pretty scenic and rural at times. It'll take you past some old fashioned southern estates, a wintery or two, and doesn't contain much traffic. About the toughest part is jumping on 95 but that'll be the case wherever you get on that interstate....
