WNYBuckHunter
Ive been looking at AR15s for a few years now, but have been hesitant to spend that kind of money on something i didnt know alot about. Ive considered buying a new, factory rifle, used factory rifles and used custom builds, but I could never find exactly what I wanted. Ive been reading up on doing a custom build from a bare lower up, and it looks like it shouldnt be that tough, so I came up with a plan for my first build. The gun is going to be a carbine length piston drive, 556 upper with iron sights on a flat top receiver. The lower will be pretty standard, but with my choice of parts. I am going to build it using a stripped lower and upper from a local company. So far I have the parts and cost for the lower planned out. Heres the parts list for the lower: All Star Tactical forged lower Daniel Defense lower parts kit/trigger with Magpul MOE trigger guard Magpul MIAD grip BCM Milspec buffer Stock will be whatever I find a good deal on. Probably the Magpul CTR or Carbine I havent gotten too far with the upper yet, but heres what I have figured out so far: All Star Tactical forged upper with forward assist Adams Arms carbine length piston kit Magpul MBUS sights Should be a fun gun for at the range and plinking. I also plan to put a few different uppers together for different purposes. Probably a varmint config (20" bull barrel gas system) and maybe a 458 SOCOM setup for big game.
Single_shot
Nice set up and parts picks for your build,it should look and run well! My most recent delve into black rifles is on the AK format, an AMD-65 in 7.62x39.I will be customizing that in the weeks to come myself. Here are a couple links to look around. http://www.tac47indu.../all_ar_15.html http://www.krebscustom.com/index.shtml http://www.mountsplu...ccessories.html Good luck on your build and keep us posted! jusputtn
In case any of you are eyeing Single_shot's setup, I'm pretty sure that it wouldn't be legal in NY state.
NFA-ADK
Why do you say that jusputtn? I know you can not use that clip but the gun is ok for hunting. Ahh retractable stock, I see now. I don't think you can make it with that in NY. Not sure what mag regs are in place except for hunting. I have two five round clips just for hunting, 5 round max with and semi auto action for big game, that im sure is fact.
erussell
I have had several AK's and have not been very impressed with them. Now I dont know alot about a personel building of AK's but the imports are pretty much crap and are just for pray and spray situations. Nothing funner than taking two 30 rounders and taping them together, slapping them in crankin back on the old charging handle and rockin and rollin. Not very accurate but fun. The AR's are alot more accurate imo. Use to shoot open sights out to 300 yrds ( m16a2) in the army and do pretty good, only failed to make expert once because of a bad mag that kept jammin and eating up my target time. His rifle is post ban, as are the drum mags. He and I talked about it and I gave him a heads up on the AWB rules in NY so he doesnt end up with a felony by mistake. Actually, you can use a drum mag or any other capacity mag, if its pre ban, and you can use it with any gun. If the rifle is pre ban, you can have the folding stock, etc.
jusputtn
I just didn't want anyone to be led astray if they decided to do a build. The rules in NY are too complicated and unnecessary. Hope you all are letting your legislators now your opinions.
WNYBuckHunter
Agreed. Make sure to do your home work on the laws before you buy an AR or any other gun for that matter. NYFirearms.com has some very good threads that give the complete AWB laws broken up by type of weapon (pistol, rifle, shotgun). Youd be surprised at some of the guns that have nothing to do with the military that do not conform to the NY laws.
Single_shot
No..it wont be coming to NY. I would have to make the stock non folding permanantly amongst other things to conform to NY laws.I have too much involved to want to change it to make "them" happy. It's my fun gun and SHTF go to. Yes this is legal in PA and not NY folks.Don't want anyone thinking wrongly of me lol. Just shooting the breeze and admiring WNYs build, figured I would share my latest delve into the AK world. WNYBuckHunter
Well, looks like the piston drive setup will be my second upper, as I just made a deal on a gas upper in trade for a gun I am selling. Now I have to get moving on my lower...
WNYBuckHunter
Picked up my upper yesterday, Its a 16" DTI. I am going to replace the hand guard with a multi-rail setup, otherwise it will stay as is.
Single_shot
Is that chrome lined? Not that it matters really, curious. Can't really tell by the pic,but that's not the heavy bbl.I think you can get them in 3 different thickness...heavy,med,thin. You will like the Qrail setup and it looks better and actually has function vs the standard grip.
WNYBuckHunter
No, this isnt the chrome lined barrel. This is the standard chrome moly 16" dissipator barrel with the bayonet lug ground off. It is the medium profile with M4 feed ramps. It has the original Del Ton carrier but was upgraded to a PSI Top spec full auto bolt. I should be picking up the stripped lower this week. Good thing they ground off the bayonet lug, its not worth the felony. Lots of crimes these days are being committed by brandishing bayonets. WNYBuckHunter
Went and picked up my stripped lower from All Star Tactical in Webster today. I also decided to go with their lower parts kit, buffer tube and their new heavy buffer. Ill have to wait until the buffers are in from the machine shop though, as they just finished designing them and sent them off for production. I also picked up a laser engraved dust cover for the upper. Ill get some pics and post them later.
