I got my 870 re-sighted in and ready to go last Wednesday. 2 1/2 inches high at 50, same at 100. Should put 0 at 150 with the SSTs. Not gonna mess with the handgun this year, havent sighted it in yet, will probably just upgrade the bases and scope for next season. All those deer that think coming into the field at 60 yards is funny are gonna get a surprise next week.

Well I just got off my week long bowhunting sabatical. and It was for the most part, minus being sick and almost drowning in my own snot, I good experiance. Though I have to say I am getting a bit perterbed with my fellow bowhunters. Unlike 308 It has been my experiance that the gun season leaves more dead bodies in the woods than bow around where I hunt on account that after 25 yrs of hunting I have only found two deer that I could definately say were killed by a bow. Well that count went up this week. It started Wednesday with a four point that hobbled up to my stand with an arrow sticking out of his neck. There was so much damage to the neck muscles that he couldnt raise his head. He was skin and bones and I couldn't let him suffer any more so I took him out at 10 yrds as he tried to eat an apple. Double lung and he dropped in a pile where I shot him, apperently he was on his last legs. I pulled the arrow out of his neck and the wound looked old and infected and he smelled terrible. I put my tag on him and threw him in the back of my truck and took him home. I called the game warden and he came out the next day and gave me a new tag. He didn't want to put that stinky thing in his truck so I dragged it out through the woods behind my house for the yotes to eat. On my way down the bank behind my house I was startled to see a deer laying there and walked over to it. It was a spike I saw crossing the road by my house all summer, gut shot and dead a few days.So I grabbed him by the leg and dragged him to the bottom of the hill to so it wouldnt stink up my yard. I can only imagine what the gun hunters are going to think when they come across a pile of bow shot deer laying in the woods. I hope the coyote's get to them before Saturday. Game warden just shook his head when he saw the buck and said this yr is bad for lost deer. He's heard of a lot. So if you are a bow hunter, that next time you pull that bow back are you 100% sure you are making the best shot possible. A tag sandwich is better than a maginal shot and a wounded buck. Same goes for gun hunters too. You guys are up next.

Spent a half hour sighting in my Remington 30-06 yesterday at Calverton range with my brother. Also sighted in my brother's Savage. We are ready for next weekend. Who else is ready?

For me it's been a poor season, seen a number of does, but no shot opportunities and only one buck that I've seen.Weather has been too warm, little mast crop, rut seems to be a split rut this year.

Seen him in the woodlot on Corby on the other side of the 4 way stop too, right before Bragg St. I used to live right by there on Ontario St, and we always had some great deer in the back yard. The other one I know of is just down the rd near CR14 in Bloomfield. That ones a doe though.

The best season I have ever had. I got to watch my 15 year old son take a wall hanger 9 point then he got to share with me this seven point I scored on this weekend.

You seem to have a real problem with reading comprehension my friend. Nobody is saying they would set a damn foot on your land or anyone else's, we are all talking about spotlighting from a public highway, not driving up your private logging road. BTW, if you or anyone else threatened me in any way while I was doing something perfectly legal, youd better believe that you or any other person's ass would be in jail.

The DEC is not going to hassle you as long as you are spotting legally, they just ask to make sure you dont have a gun or bow in the car. Ive had them pull up while Im out before, no BS involved. Other than the past couple of years, I have gone spotting every year. Never once have I even considered shooting one from the car, at night or illegally otherwise. I just enjoy looking at the deer that are around, they dont stay on the same property all the time, especially during the rut. You could have a buck from 3 or more miles away walk by your stand. If you dont like to do it, fine, but saying things like "I have never myself heard of someone spot lighting a deer unless they are jacking it!!" just makes you sound silly. You shouldnt paint with such a broad brush.

Any year that I can still get in the woods is a good season.. if I never kill another deer in my life... I will always have a great experience as long as I can be out hunting.

You would have to ask me this when the season is over..this is my personal favorite time of year to hunt..

The Buck was taken in the Round Hill area of Virginia. Estimated to be 5.5-6.5 yrs.old. The 180 was a green score only, I'm sure after drying it would be much less. Here is a better pic as far as the angle of holding the antlers goes.

Absolutely check your rabbits if you rabbit hunt-- I could have sworn that the information about Tularemia in rabbits was in our hunting guide years ago, but I have no way of checking. I should check our current one and see! I do know they told us about it in my hunter's education class but that was many years ago. To be honest, I cannot tell which spots are 'okay' and which are not, so I don't mess with bunnies anymore. I rarely see them anyhow. Slightly off topic, but I had to grin at the thought of never eating anything carrying a parasite-- not trying to give anyone a hard time, but parasites within freshwater fish are extremely common-- there's only a few species of many that we see when cleaning a fish. It's why it's so important not to eat freshwater fish raw unless you are in a true survival situation. I can honestly say I'm more worried about some of the processed food I eat than I am about eating a dead, well cooked bug, but I can absolutely respect and understand sentiments otherwise!
