Remington 700 XCR II 30-06
eagle rider replied to eagle rider's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
Thanks, I'm really impressed with this one,.... looks like Remington really pulled out many of the stops. -
Just got my new Remmy 700 XCR II in 30-06. Added Nikon glass (new Prostaff 3-9x40) with Leupold bases and rings. This is an awesome deer rifle set up. Light weight, subdue colors, designed to take a beating!!!!! Should be a home run. I loaded up some 150 and 165 gr. ammo for it. It much prefers the Sierra Game King 165 gr with 57.5 grrains of RS Big Game, a WLR primer and Federal brass. Check it out: http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/centerfire/model-700/model-700-xcr-ii.aspx

as you can see its a mixed bag of reviews. Some years the can worked, some year not so much. That aside I'd never be in the woods in the fall without a grunt tube.
-
me too, a lot of encourraging sign and sightings this year so far. Good to know that last winter didn't kill too many.
-
Congrats, that's awesome!!!!

Thanks G-man. I shot it yesterday and papertuned it. It seems to be fine and its punching bullet holes in the paper. It just scared the devil out of me!!!!!!! The difference in speed it 5 fps. All that for so little.......
-
Yeah, I'm not happy and although the string only snapped the last few inches of the draw, the snap sound was really unpleaseant. I hope it will be okay long term.
-
Thanks, I might regret this yet,.... too soon to tell. Just llike hunting with bolt action rifles, I'm a big fan of the keep it simple plan..... The WB was simple.
-
I think I should. Thanks G-Man

Thanks guys, what do you think of my little mishap with the short dryfire. Should I be freaking out?

The old adage, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Well I'm a bone head. My Bear Strike was shooting high 260's with a 450 grain arrow. I was using a Whisker Biisquet on it. A frined out west suggestsed that I can get another 10 or 12 FPS going to a fall away type rest. I bought the NAP Appache on sale at the local Dicks Sporting Goods. So when I was inatslling it I had the bow drawn to check the length of the rope to the bus cable..... yup you guessed it, I was about 1/3 of the way drawn when the bow dry fired. It doesn't seem to have broke, I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet. Anyway,..... does anyone use the fall away style rests?

No but that sounds pretty good.

The one distinction is that there are factory ammo's out there for modern chamberings of old cartridges. I think Federal Fusion has a warning about their 45-70, to NOT use it in trap door actions. I know the same is true for Corebon.

Question about hunting with a pistol
eagle rider replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
My bad, I was reading the MV line off the Federal site when I put down the ft lbs. The Hydrashock is 400 lbs at the muzzle. -
exactly see what prints the tightest group consistently, becareful to not over pressureize the rifle if the loads are getting higher, then adjust your scope accordingly. Also, cheap glass doesn't hold zero as good as even mid-price scopes will. I don't know what your set up is, just an FYI. Last point when seeing how a load is performing don't let the barrel heat up and you should run a patch down the barrel evey three rounds. It will help kep things consistent.

I agree I think the arc is a gimmick. I used a regualr range finder to range 40 yards from 20 feet up. It gave me a distance of 40 yards. When I used an arc model it took off a yard. I don't think one yard will make a dig difference.

no problem, I will shot them next week.

Question about hunting with a pistol
eagle rider replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
not to beat the deadhorse, but right tool for the right job. Throw a rock at a deer and hit it right you might kill it, just like the 40, but I honestly doubt you will. I've shot a lot of deer. They run on good shots with a entry and exit wound from a 270 NBT that blew out a lung and a liver lobe for a half mile. When you find them, they have an exit wound the size of a soda can. I'm sure it happened to you too. I had that occur this year. I hunt about 20 days of the year in two states and am fortunate enough to get deer every year. In my honest opinion a 40 would be no more (and really far less) effective on a deer than any deer rifle round would be just fom the aspect of sectional density of the bullet let alone muzzle velocity and bullet construction. I think most folks don't have the slightest idea about gun fighting and how guns chambered in rounds like 40 are designed to work on man. People know when they are shot, drugs or not. I've seen it both ways.Like I said earlier tactical shooting docterines and training are based on three shots in center mass at starting distances of 10 feet while you as the defender is on the move, Again, not typical scenarios for deer hunting. Animals have a hightened flight response, they run unless they drop on the spot. As far as your ethics point, I don't understand the comment. Variation of ethics..., not so certian. We're taught to tell people to do the right thing and follow their best judgement in a given situation that they are confronted with. So let me ask you, would you deer hunt with a 22-250? -
I reload 35 Whelen, 35 Remington, 270 Win, 270 WSM, 30-06, 243 and 300 Weatherby.
