  1. Yeah, my brother is a court officer, so I asked him to check it out for me. I know they use to be illegal, but I can no longer find them listed one way or the other on the regulations. If I hear back any solid information, I'll post it here.
  2. Can anyone tell me with 100% certainty whether it is legal or illegal to posses a crossbow within the NY City limits? I can't find anywhere that says it is illegal, but I keep seeing all the major sellers saying that shipping is restricted to NYC. Thanks~
  3. I'm not sure I've ever seen antlers still on this late in the year before.
  4. I had a coyote trot up within 20 feet of me this past season, while I was on the ground and wearing a blaze hat and vest. He must have had a *really* bad cold. I've never had one get so close to me before.
  5. http://huntingny.com/forums/index.php/topic,5100.0.html Here are some I posted a few weeks ago. Haven't had much time to take pictures since though.
  6. If I'm free on the date, I'd be interested too.
  7. Sorry, I only have a Nikon point and shoot, I really wish I had a better camera.
  8. I wish! The city has so many money problems. They could hve a lottery for SI residents, archery only. You'd raise tens of thousands of dollars. That would be much better than bringing in pros as wasting all the beautiful bucks on the island.
  9. Thanks for letting us know. You should have included your referral code so people can give you the credit.
  10. Not sure yet, either Friday, Sunday or Monday. Depends on the weather and my work schedule.
  11. If you shot him because he was doing crop damage to a local farmer, or he was digging holes on a horse farm, I think those would qualify as "good reasons". I agree with Blur, though its probably the minority view on a hunting forum. You should have a reason for killing something other than, "It was in range". I disagree with you about killing animals just to practice marksmanship or stalking. You can stalk something without killing it. I stalk deer out of season all the time, just to work on my skills. And I shoot my bow from all different positions at targets, including from my treestand. I also have never thought it was much of a challenge to sneak up on a woodchuck or muskrat. The ones that live near me must be use to having humans around because I've walked within 20 feet of them before they decide to waddle off. Just this Sunday I walked within 10 yards of a muskrat playing in a pond while I was turkey hunting. Sat there for 15 minutes just enjoying nature at work before resuming my turkey seach. To each their own. You were completely within your rights to shoot him for whatever reason, but other people are fully within their rights to say it rubs them the wrong way if you killed it for no productive use. Seems to me like this is all moot anyway. You sound like you had a reason to kill the animal, and if you do indeed use the corpse to bait in a couple of yotes, all the better.
  12. I bought the same gun in .300 WSM last year. Love it! I, too, put a Nikon scope on it, Buckmaster 4.5-14x40. Its a little more bullet than you need for deer, but I plan to take it Elk hunting sometime in the next couple of years. Hope you enjoy yours as much as I have been enjoying mine.
  13. Pond and saltwater. My 10 yr old sons love it, and since they can't hunt with me yet, I make sure to take them to the local ponds now and then.
  14. Glad to help. I went back myself on Sunday. Had a few gobbles, but most were deep in the swamp. I almost got lucky around 11:30, but I couldn't get the Tom to come in close enough to shoot before some mountain bikers scared him off. I'm going to try to get one more day in before the end of the season, hopefully with better luck. I ran into a local hunter that told me about a couple of other areas in the park to check out, so we shall see.
  15. Yep, I got one there this year. Trying to get back there tomorrow to see if I can fill out my second tag. I've only hunted there twice, so I've mainly just explored the area between Ridge and New roads going all the way down to Weed. I'll have to try to check out the fields you mentioned if I strike out early in the morning.
  16. I spray Deep Woods Off on during Spring turkey and it seems to work pretty well, but I can't see using it for deer. Wouldn't the smell of the stuff alert deer from a half mile away?
  17. I'm not sure what you mean by the "back" parking lot, but all the perimeter lots are supposed to be open. If you are talking about the lot at Ridge and Maple, I know it is open for sure as I have parked there twice while hunting turkey this spring. Hope this helps
  18. How about that deer population explosion over the past few years? I use to see groups of 1-3 every now and then. Now I see groups of 8-12+ fairly regularly when I go hiking in certain areas. This is also the first year I have seen dead deer on 440 and even some streets. Last year I had 2 eight pointers and a seven passing behind my house reguarly. There were also 2 other bucks in the area I had trailcam pictures of. And they aren't even the big bucks. A friend of mine had a picture of a 12-14 pointer. As the car accidents increase along with the deer population, what do you think the city will do?
  19. Are you talking about Stewart State Forest, which is right next to the airport?
  20. Ticks usually die when exposed to temps less than 35 degrees. Ticks that are already on animals can survive the winter from the body heat of their hosts. All other were eggs during the winter and hatched as the weather warmed. They do not hibernate. If it really was 26 degrees out and you picked up ticks, I have no explaination for that. It shouldn't be possible unless you actually picked them up somewhere else that was warmer, or they were already on hunting cloths that were in storage?
  21. Great video, I really enjoyed it, thank you for putting in the time to make it.
  22. Last year, I went out to the Sarnoff Pine Barrons a couple of times. I saw a ton of sign, but not a single deer. I did encounter more ticks than I ever have in the woods before though. I'll give it a shot again this year, hopefully with better luck, though I may try someplace a little closer to the city.
  23. @magnumhunt, I sent you a PM Everyone else, thank you, and I am definitely hooked on the Spring Turkey hunt.
