Rain brought it up to 1000cfm thankfully. It is suppose to go back down monday at midnight. I hope it drops to 500 cfm and stays there for a bit. 500 to 750 is premo. I didnt fish the 1000 but it should of brought alot of fresh steel into the river. They were staged in the lake just waiting. Should be a great week on the river.

I planted Sawtooth oaks about 8 years ago. Problem I have is unlike a Chestnut that produces nuts every year oaks are inconsitant crop bearing. -
Hopefully your safety harness will catch you first. But I know what your saying I think I would freeze up.

750 gallon stainless steel bulk tank More taps means more sap more sap means I need more tanks. Something tells me its not going to fit under the tree though. Something else tells me the only way Im getting one is doing it myself. Actually we give gifts to the kids and family members and skip the aggrevation of watching each other open something dumb. Too bad Christmas turned into a gift giving money pit instead of celebration. Who's idea was that anyway? Bahumbug lol -
Seems like I have seen that first picture before last year. I usually save them on my pc got to go look. But who cares those deer are massive. I couldnt imagine what would go through my head if I see something like that walk into my sights.

If you buy Chestnut trees you need to make sure they are blight tolerant. Remeber Blight is what wiped them out in the first place. Make sure you do your homework before just running out and getting them. I believe most need 2 different varieties to pollinate and produce the nuts. I will be going with the Dustan myself its a cross between teh american and chinese chestnut. Got to do a tad more homework yet to make sure whether this variety needs another to pollinate. -
So just so I got this right you would believe a guy who gets interviewed after harvesting this deer? You really think he is going to come out and say if he indeed do anything wrong. in public? Let me also ask this. Is any one aware of the time this deer was shot and the time the DEC followed up on it? So lets see DEC knocks on the door well after this deer was shot. You think this guy is going to take the DEC to the exact spot it was shot or you think he is going to point to a spot that so happens to be 500 feet from any buildings and like Culver also pointed out there is basically a very small section that so happens to lie about in the center of that one cemetary that would make it a legal kill. Im not going on a friend of a friend or a cousing crap either. A direct family member that sent me a picture of this DB holding this deer. Any one want to take a guess at what he used for a blind? No Kudos are deserved for this kill. But Hey its all good. This was a selfish act of a man looking for bone. This Deer was well Known to the Locals. Many photographs of it and many people have enjoyed watching this deer. Tame is not a good description for this deer as it lived in the wild, but yet it was not too awfully concerned with human contact either. Not anly do I think this is not hunting to me but I also think it was a selfish act for one person to put on his wall and brag about it when it was enjoyed by a whole community before he stood in a cemetary and greed took over. If this deer was taken by just about any other situation that was legal I would take my hat off to this guy or anyone for that mattter. No jealousy runs through these vanes because a fellow hunter kills a great buck. Nor am I ANTI hunter, more like Im an ANTI-DB.

Glad you came out with that post HT. cause i didnt want to. I have heard the whole story from one of his relatives. Read between the lines of what I said in the last post and yours and most could get the jist of what really happened. But there will always be the guys shaking his hand and think nothing is indeed wrong with what he did. The whole thing is BS.

You guys are all talking about my home area with the Amish. Off the top of my head there have been 4 buggie vehicle accidents past couple years. No fatalities. The last one a drunk in a 1 ton truck destroyed a buggy that had a woman and her 4 kids in it. I know this family personaly its the brother to the one on route 3. The drunks insurance company had to cover the funds for medical and new buggy. The Amish by me are all very nice people and Im glad its them keeping the farms going rather than a city slicker polititians building on it. They will let you hunt their land as well. As far as a safety triangle goes Im not sure some have them others dont. All have the oil lamp on the back and one on the front. If its raining forget it you cant see them at all in the dark with rain.

Im with you SteveB I change my mind. How awesome of a hunt that would be. Drive around town see a big monster walk through this cemetary on the way home from work. Stop by one day when the caretakers out mowing the lawn and ask for permission to hunt over sacred ground. Go back to my truck in my work clothes and stick an arrow in the thing. How much better could hunting ever get. LMAO Man I would be so proud I would just keep my mouth shut and not tell a sole except maybe I would let one of my buddies take a picture of it on there cell phone and hope he never sends it to anyone. Good times right there. How can a caretaker give permision to a cemetary anyway. Arent they owned by the city or town? So that makes them owned by the public right? Not sure just asking. He should of video taped this and started a new cool hunting show. Maybe call it "Sacred Deer Hunting" or " Head Stone Hunter" man I bet Dead Down Wind would sponsor the show. What a joke.

Sucks and I can relate. Last year I found a real nice 10 point in the middle of my land that was in the same shape. Thanksgiving last year. I was bummed. Had him on trail cams as well.

I wonder how many deer you guys never seen that spooked from the smell of the smoke. I think you guys are kidding yourselves thinking it doesnt bother them. I dont know about you but how many wood stoves fires have you seen in the middle of the woods lol.

http://www.chestnuthillnursery.com/Dunstan-Chestnut-Trees-1918.Category.html?gclid=CJjjtv6P0KwCFcp65QodHxQdqg Look here lots of info on the chestnut. Mature in 15 to 20 years produce in 5 over 1000 pounds of nuts per acre of trees. -
Im sure us hunters spend alot more money on other things that we dont need that cost more than a license. I still say its darn cheap for what you get out of it. Less than a tank of gas in my truck, cheaper than taking the family ot dinner, cant even snowmobile for a day on that money, I can think of alot of things that concern me more than something that allows me to enjoy countless hours a year in the field not to mention the price of beef. Safety course, when is the last time you ever hear of anyone failing one? I remeber the class and there was a few kids that didnt pass the test but yet walked out with there certificate. Something needs to change with the mentalitly of some hunters safety practices without doubt.. Most of these hunter accident you read about are stupid common sense things should never have happened and could have been avoided.

I read a few months back that the chestnut is also a great option. By the sounds of it the produce quite alot of crop. The way it sounded they will start producing nuts around the 5 year mark. Supposedly they are the go to nut for deer but since they got wiped out in the US many years ago not too many around unless they were planted. I will be ordering some for the spring myself. -
While tracking a buck my brother shot his first year bowhunting down this nasty ravine we decided to break for lunch. Sat down pulled out our lunch and we were talking up a storm not even being quite and we hear this noise behind us, we were goofing around and didnt notice a doe standing so close to us we could reach out and slap it. It was very cool to see. T

I will be sitting all day with the .06 in a pinch point at the bottom of 2 good size hills. I will be in a foul mood the hole time listening to 500 gunshots going off and knowing bow season is over for another year. Although it was a great bowseason. I wonder with this economy if people will start taking aim instead of winging lead seeing how expensive it is now. Yeah your right porbably not.

Should the .410 be legal for deer?
wdswtr replied to 13BVET's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I own a 410 and it barely has the nuts to kill a grouse let alone a deer. I have shot a few grouse with my 410 with very poor results. 28 guage maybe 410 no way in hell. -
I have a thought for you guys on this one. How many phone calls do you think the DEC gets from guys who shoot a buck that ended up having major ground shrinkage and did not want to tag it. So they think they can outwit the system and call the DEC and issue them a tag to keep it and all the while they get to keep hunting. The way I see it the 2 choices you had were both good ones. Tag it and be done with it and filling your own buck tag or call the DEC. I think the DEC made th correct choice in taking the deer and then getting dispersed to the hungry. How do they know you did not make this story up and was trying to double dip on a buck? Im trying to figure out why you feel so bad also. The deer is not wasted and you get to keep hunting. What is wrong with all that. You could have let that deer rot and go to waste. You didnt and it wont.

I live right on the salmon near Altmar. There are a decent amount in the river nothing mind blowing though. lots of dying salmon doing the dying dance. You can watch them just rolling and splashing on the water. Place smells terrible from the dead fish. Its very early for good steelhead fishing. Come January if you think its good now you will be mind blown then in January. Eggs sacs this time of year are a good bet, my favorite color is purple. Light line and terminal tackle is best water is low and clear and lots of fishing pressure on the river yet so makes for some spooked fish. When they open the gates up a bit it will bring in a nice fresh run and fishing will be better. I have been averagiing 3 steelhead each time out. Come january those numbers will go up, way up. Thats when I switch over to stone flys.

So I was listening to Q Country radio station and they had this on there news segment. It said Nash is being charged by DEC for illegal use of a weapon and they confiscated the weapon that turned out to be a crossbow that killed this deer. This guy is in some deep crap now. With all the crossbow debate going on I can just hear whats coming next from the haters. Dont shoot the messenger just repeating what the station said. Not good.

Thats funny right there. Seriously though I think as the season progresses the need to fill the tag gets overwhelming to some as well. I hear of people taking risky shots that they would have never thought about earlier in the season. Its been said by many guys who understand this already but again its not the weapon of choice its the hands its in. Make sure that first shot is the only shot you need and then lets it takes its course. If you do everything you can to be proficient at shooting and making the right choice in shot placement you are a step ahead of the yahoos who are flinging arrows or lead. Things happen that we can not explain nor control. What we can do is make sure we are good at what we do and that means undertanding whitetail behavior, where the vitals are at all angles for the best shot placement, shooting your weapons on a regular basis and knowing the limits they have. Also knowing your own personal limits and at what distance you can comfortably and confidently make a kill shot. My opinion is if you practice these thing you are a hunter, if you dont then your just another one of those wannabe lead and arrow throwers wounding deer.

This is not necassarily true. The particular camera you have can very well have the proper formatting and software to reconie a higher gig card (HD). Not all cameras can reconize nor format larger gig cards. Age of the camera and price range has alot ot do with their sd capabilities. For example I can format the heck out of a 4 gig card and my one moultrie cam will not reconize the card. Now stick a 2 gig in there no problem. And on the other side of this one of my laptops cannot read a card 4 gig or bigger without an external card reader. Theres more to it than just sticking any size card in. You very well may just have the right combo to accept any size which is very doable with the right cam.

Im trying to just figure out the excitement of hunting that thing. If its true and people were feeding it and stuff where the hell is the challenge in that. What so you do call the thing over with a whistle like your calling your dog over to play. Theres something to brag about.
