Yep contact a forester and then tap those maples and make some syrup instead of cutting them down. Or find a local maple syrup maker and see if they are interested in doing a tap lease. Its very possible to get 1.00 per tap on a tap lease. If you have any good number of maples you could create some annual income versus a one time check. Also alot of syrup producers will buy the sap from you if you wanted to tap them yourself and not deal with the expense of the equipment. Or you could tap them yourself with some used equipment and sell the syrup yourself. Lots of options, but a forester is a great step to point anyone in the right direction for a well balanced woods. If there is any interest in the tapping route you could shoot me a PM and I can put you in contact with local producers for you.

THE GREAT HEALTH CARE DEBATE..
wdswtr replied to sits in trees's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
I am totaly lost in the liberal thinking. American citizens are being turned into puppets and its Obama's hand that is up your arse trying to control your every move and making you become dependant on government. He indeed is a smart man its just a shame he cares not for the United States of America. This health care plan is just sickening. It is one more step towards making you completely dependant on government. He is succesfully creating a country with no pride. He is teaching our children it is perfectly fine to become nothing in this country because the government will take care of you through the people who do have pride and are succesful. Let me create a couple scenarios for you liberals and tell me which scenario you would accept, now its hypothetical but indeed it is the concept that Obama and his liberals are teaching and asking of proud hard working succesful americans. Now go back in time a bit when you were in college or high school. You are the honor roll student, the 4.0 college student. You take great pride from your hard work and succes at being a top student. Now every day sitting next to you is a student that cares alot less, spends little time doing any work, plays alot harder and there grades are suffering from it. In fact they are either failing or at the point where there grades are not going to be able to fill the requirements to attend the college any longer. Scenario 1. This student has no choice and although he/she had a great time drinking and partying during there short stay at the school. Oh well he/she paved their own road and its not your problem. Your problem is your future. Your problem is creating a life and family that is cared for and all there needs are met by yourself not anyone else. Your problem is becoming the best you can be and teaching your children the same morals and values your parents bestowed upon you. Your problem is making your parents proud of who you are becoming and using the money that has been spent on you to become succesful in a responsible manner. Scenario 2....Well how is it fair that you worked so hard and received such honorable grades while this other student is going to have a subpar life from having so much fun and not focusing on there future. Well its not, so what we will do to make his future as bright and equal as yours is we are going to take part of your grades and apply them to theirs. Problem solved you both now have average grades and will have an average income when you get an average job. You will not be rewarded from your success and hard work instead you will have the great feeling inside you knowing that you carried an irresponsible kid on your back while you had to work 4 times harder than they did for the both of you to be an average student. It is truly an honorable and great feeling to know that other student can depend on you to carry them. With great pride you can sleep easy knowing that that other person is going to teach his children that its okay to be a slacker, its okay to be irresponsible because the system allows you to be that way, why you ask well because the other smart hard working responsible kid will carry you through out your life. Scenario 2 is liberal thinking whether you are willing to accept it or not. Theres no reward to being succesful unless you are a Liberal Polititian. Your reward is being crammed down your throat by taking away your success and giving it to the lazy and irresponsible. Wait you mean to tell me your a liberal and you are not going with Scenario #2? Theres a word for that I believe its called a hypocrite. And to be sure you understand what a hypocrite is here is the definition. 1 a person who puts on a false appearance of virtue or religion 2 a person who acts in contradiction to his or her stated beliefs or feelings. And before anyone questions this no where have I stated anything against TEMPORARY assistance, disability or any military benefits. Obama needs to go, there is no debate about it. His disfunctional health care plan needs to go, his lack of teaching americans to have pride needs to go, his denial of job creation and false un-employment numbers need to go, his lies need to go, his fuel and energy plan needs to go. He has done NOTHING to better this country as a whole. When a government rewards you for being a failure and discredits you for being succesful it is the biggest shame we are facing as an American. His inaugural speech is quite a joke looking back at it now. "At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because We the people have remained faithful to the ideas of our forebearers and true to our founding documents" "On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord" "On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promise, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, that for far long have strangled our politics" So lets burn the constitution and everything it stands for, thanks for taking my hope and turning it into the greatest fear I have ever had for my children and this country, thanks for even more false promises thanks for a whole new list of petty grievances you have added to our lives, thanks for strangling our politics even more and not putting so much added and needed faith in our government system Obama has put a whole new twist on worn out dogmas. Sad truly sad -

Over 5000 years ago, Moses said to the children of Israel…“Pick up your shovel, mount your asses and camels, and I will lead you to the promised land.” Nearly 75 years ago, Roosevelt said, “Lay down your shovels, sit on your asses, and light up a camel. This is the “promised land.” Now, Obama has stolen your shovel, …taxed your asses, raised the price of camels, and mortgaged the “promised land!” Stolen but a good one.

Good to hear about your guys returning found items and getting stuff back. I have been know to pick up a cigarette butt or 2 and some other misc. garbage I witness people throwing out there car windows. I get some pretty weird looks when they roll their windows down and I say sorry to bother you but I think you dropped this. LOL my daughter doesnt find it as funny as me though. Amazing why people cant hold a empty McDonalds bag till they get to a garbage can. Drives me nuts. I was riding with a friend and his son once awhile ago and at one point he threw out a fast food bag out the window. His dad says to him where is the wrappers? Kid says I threw them out the window why? Dad pulls over and say find twice as many wrappers on the side road and dont come back till you do. Minutes late he comes strolling back with a buch of garbage. Bet he never did that again. LOL

It is a great way to spend some time with the family in the spring Doc. There is no comparison to the commercial crap on the shelf. I am the 3rd generation producer and right now am prepping for the season myself. Its a never ending cylce of growing and adding more and more taps. More and more equipment as well. I will have 2500 taps on my land by the time Im done expanding here and then I have several locals looking for me to expand onto there property with tap leases. I expand from the income generated off the land from Syrup sales and when Im am in retirement I will have a very good income off it and something to keep me busy. Hoping for 250 gallons of syrup this season. Syrup seems expensive as it is indeed a luxery item to buy but if anyone has knowledge to how much work it truly is they would quickly change there mind on the how much it cost. Its not a few weeks work in the spring it a year round prep and woods work to make it all come together. Runnning tubing is time consuming, expansion projects, putting up 12 full cords of wood just for the sugarhouse, cleaning, cleaning and more cleaning, pulling tanks out of the woods and storing them, setting tanks in the woods for the season, keeping trails cleared and plowed through the woods, setting vac pumps, replacing tree rat damamge and looking for vacum leaks all season long and heck a fire hasnt even been lit yet to boil. Hard work and time consuming but well worth it in the end. Cutting the fire wood takes about 3 times longer to put up than wood for the house. It gets split to the size of your arm to get the max out of the evaporator. I have about 2 more days of prep and then a few days to get the taps drilled and set. Then its go time here. I also maintain a Maple Syrup Forum as well http://www.sugarbush.info/forums/index.php. Then run my own business servicing and selling printing equipment. Heres to a great season for anyone else bitten by the maple disease.

All depends on the sugar content of the sap and the tree. My trees average 2.0 percent sugar content. That is 43 gallons of sap to 1 gallon of syrup. I have some trees that put out 30 gallons of sap a tap at a tad lower sugar content. G-man there are many ways to get that sap up the hill. A series of sap ladders or a pump station at the bottom of the hill would be the 2 easiest ways. 100 acres of maples is alot of taps and lets say you can get 2000 taps on that 100 acres, if you pulled out 750 gallons of syrup from that and sold for 60 a gallon retail you are looking at annual income of $45,000. Or if you sold it bulk and not deal with retail sales you could pull in $21,450. How much annual income would you get out of those woods if you logged it? There are producers always looking for tap leases as well. Did I mention maple syrup is a tax free income?
-
Well coming from a maple syrup producer I am cringing hearing such talk form you people. Yikes. 5 acres of maples with syrup prices upwards of 70 bucks a gallon and each tap on vac has the potential of making .5 gallons x how many trees. Im going to pretend I never read this thread.

You CUT DOWN MAPLE trees

Oh while practicing dont tie a hook on the line. Just a small piece of yarn will do the trick. Your line and rod is doing the work not the hook so you dont need it snagging and getting caught in the grass or worse on your body at first. Good Luck.

Oh Boy your in trouble now. I am a very avid Fly Fisherman. There is just something unique about most of us. The willingness to share the water, swap a few home made flies and some tips are pretty common things amongst us. Once you get up to snuff I suggest making a trip up the the West Branch of the Ausable River near Lake Placid. Hell I will even join you. It is by far my favorite water to fish. I will warn you right now that Fly fishing is like golfing. One rod wont do it all just like one club. If you are anything like myself you will have an arsenal of flyrods in weights ranging from a 2wt for those tiny Brookie streams up to an 11 wt for slamming the salmon on bigger rivers. I have yet to see a flyshop yet that doesnt give peivate or group casting lessons. Also places like Bass Pro and Gander Mt. have courses as well. If you were closer I would be happy to give you lessons myself. Been at it since I was 12. Landed a couple nice steelhead just yesterday on the Salmon RIver with one. Heres a link to some quality flies at a great price you will find hard to beat. http://www.flydealflies.com/ Pretty soon you will have a fly tying bench and feathers all over the house lol. Go ahead and cast on the lawn you will be fine and your equipment as well. Just clean your line afterwords. This is how most courses and everyone starts out anyways. Fly line is tough stuff and if taken care of will last you alot of years.

D.E.C. finally nailed my neighbors baiting
wdswtr replied to hb270deermanager's topic in Deer Hunting
I agree with Biggamefish. Be on your toes next year for sure. It will take more than once to get the point across to a-holes like that. Good for you for standing up and taking charge. Hope the outcome is a heck of alot better than mine was. DEC hand slap was all they ever gave my trespassing baiting poaching neighbors. It took a lot of years of blowing them in before they got the point. There place is up for sale and they left for Florida. Hope it doesnt take you as long and they get out as well. Not to many things in life are worse than having neighbors like that. -
This thread is pretty darn funny. I really love the part where Rifle says for the 3rd or 4th time he is done with this place and then post again and again and again and again. Some of you guys are too funny. Love the picture WNY that right there is funny stuff. I do have to say I find no humor in the singing thing though. But hey if it makes others laugh in a world that is full of anger heck have at it but how about a new song next time.

Anyone else find it amusing that a guy says he is done on here and then continues to post like 8 more times on the same thread LMAO. Must be getting close to the end of deer season and tag soup is weighing on peoples minds. How can you not read this thread and get a good laugh out of the comments? What is there like one deer in question on this site all fall? I have seen nothing but pages and pages of Kudos, great job, wow, your the man. Seems to me the vast majority of harvested deer are congradulated on. Wouldnt this be an awesome site if everyone agreed and there was nothing to talk about? Burmjohn and his mods have done a great job with this site. I have even question some of them and I respect their responses. Out of a thousand threads we have a couple negative ones, big deal.
