  1. Sorry WNY, I didn't mean to jack your thread. I was going to post some pics later on, including one with Thor with only one antler. That 2 1/2 year old's rack, his name is Rocker, went almost 190". I think she told us that his great grandfather almost hit 300" before he died. She is going to have somewhere around 40 fawns this spring, so if you feel like you need a new hobby, raise your own 200"+ buck.
  2. My wife and I spent the weekend in Rochester and I saw this place online. Walking with Whitetails is a game farm with about 40 whitetail deer. She has a couple of whiteface piebald does, and several 160"+ with one that scorred near 300". The tour was great and well worth going. It's kinda awkward though, when you expect deer to bolt away from you and these guys just come right up to the fence. I guess the slices of apples in my hand had something to do with it. Anyway, its a great place to go and drool over giant bucks and have some fun. http://walkwithwhitetails.com/
  3. Dom, I posted about this about a week or so ago. I'm not seeing my usual birds that seem to hang out in the same areas. It's been over two weeks since I saw a bird.
  4. I thought for sure that the milder weather would bring them out, but I wasn't seeing them then either. I don't really have to find them April. I just like being in the know.
  5. That's a nice fan! It looks to be larger than average.
  6. So over here in Niagara County, I have been seeing birds pretty regular all winter long, they seem to movefrom farm to farm, staying within about a mile area. But, the past two weeks, I haven't seen any. There are four areas that are spread pretty far apart in my travels, but none have any birds. With the weather being milder (if 57 is mild and not downright comfy) I figured to see more of them. Anyone having the same exprience or no something I don't?
  7. Yeah, the rounds I'm using now, some type of Federal, work great at 40 yards. But if Hevi is getting it out to 60 ethically, I would consider switching. I'm still debating personally if anything past 40 is ethical or not. I'm kinda thinking it might be along the linees of dynamite in fishing. Not that I'm judging anyone who takes a shot that far, ethics are a deeply personal issue. But if Hevi has 80% retention at 60 yards, its really hard to argue against it.
  8. I know I am! I got a Remington 1187 Supermag in the Turkey package for Christmas! I put a Red dot on it and am so stoked to get it out there! If the weather ever cooperates I might even get to shoot it before the season starts. I bought a ton of diaphragm calls at BPS last year after the season, I just opened them up this past month and have been playing with them.
  9. I ask mostly because I'm having a hard time justifying $5 a shot. If I use just a couple to pattern, it's still unbelievably expensive. Going out to 60 yards sounds great, but I still wonder about the ethics of that kind of shot. I know there is a rebate for $5 off a box, but I'm thinking with a Jellyhead choke and some other standard turkey load, i can still kill them at 45 yards.
  10. I looked over last years posts on the subject and saw a lot of guys that wanted to/thought about using either Hevi-13 or the Hevi Magnum blend. I was curious if it was worth $4 a shot. I saw that the Still Target World Champions all used Hevi-13 (From the NWTF). I know my Federal Turikey Loads will put enough pellets in the kill zone at 40 yards, but I'm curious about others exprience with them. I'm not really looking to start a debate about your combo working for you, just some thoughts from those who have used those loads.
  11. i remember seeing something about this on Field and Stream, last year I think. If you google it you can find more info on "melanistic" deer. Personally, I've never seen one, although I have seen shades of red and an albino.
  12. I'll be going south on a hunt and would like to get some deke's. I would prefer the Carry Lites or any that pack or fold away. I'm over in Buffalo area and could pick them up anytime. I don't have any (gave mine away before I moved) so need a few of them.
  13. I got my new Remington 1187 Supermag in the Turkey package and the waterfowl barrel to go with it. I am very happy, feeling like Ralphie from Christmas story...
  14. I've had my 10/22 forever. its awesome and fully customizable. Pick one up used to save some bucks, but if you go brand new, you won't regret it.
  15. So I am thinking about buying the 1187 Super Mag with the turkey package, and then later on buying a deer barrel and a waterfowl barrel. I just wanted to make sure that I can do this. I tried calling Remington, but they have been on vacation most of the week. My real questions are: 1. Are the deer and the waterfowl barrels readily available? An internet search doesn't turn up much on the waterfowl barrel. 2. Anyone else switch out barrels and have any suggestions? 3. Can you buy the turkey barrel seperately somewhere else? Dicks has a sale on the 1187 SM but its in waterfowl package.
  16. I was just looking for some opinions on a shotgun that I could change out barrels on for each of the three listed above. I'm leaning towards an 1187. I don't shotgun hunt that much, but would like the option if it presented itself.
  17. every time I have come up on a deer that wasn't dead, 4-5 times, i have shot it again. i don't think i could or would want to risk it, cutting its throat.
  18. @ WNY: More hunters is not the problem as I exprienced it, it was the time allowed to hunt the special zone was short, a few weeks after normal opener. The other was the disregard of hunters by tourists who would actively interfere with my hunt. If they allowed more time, it would certainly be profitable. Between three of us this year we took four deer. More time to hunt, could mean more deer. @NCountry: I agree with a late season minus tourists.
  19. if they were serious about lowering deer numbers, and they were indeed to use sharp shooters at whatever their cost is, they should open up the cabins in the park to hunters who would be helping them to lower those numbers for free. they should also expand the dates we are allowed to hunt there. I spent a week there when they opened the special archery doe only permits. I was bothered every day i was there by tourists. It really made me rethink trying it again next year.
  20. sorry to bump, but still looking.
  21. wouldnt something like have to be in a deer management plan submitted to the public for review before a state agency could do that?
  22. I'm looking for a Remington 1187 Mag either in black or camo. Any barrel would work, but prefer the deer barrel. I have a Benelli Nova that is almost brand new I am willing to trade with cash for. Pm with pics, price and specs.
  23. It's a picture of a picture on a cell phone. So quality is def not good. That "square" at the boot is a reflection of another cellphone screen. It doesn't look doctored from this view, but again quality is so poor. However, any 200+ deer would be all over in no time, so I'm guessing old pic or fake.
