  1. I suggest something like this: http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?pdesc=Hot-Shot-Fleece-4-1-Fleece-Hood&i=452523&str=balaclava&merchID=4005 i use mine as a gaiter some times and full face mask others. if you want you can put the base on the top of your head and it'll do the same thing as a beanie. if you want a true beanie, GM has a store brand one tht is black fleece on the inside and Realtree on the outside, but the outside isnt fleece.
  2. Anyone know of a DEC Calendar with the hunting seasons in a iCAl or GCal format? For those who don't know what that is, its a calendar format so you can directly input it into your google or Iphone calendar.
  3. My goto for a few years was a 7mm rem mag and I don't think it kicked that bad. I use a limbsaver on it anyway, so that takes a considerable amount of recoil instead of my shoulder. As setters said, its the muzzle blast that got me. that thing is loud. My 300 WSM isnt that bad. But when the adrenaline flows, you don't hear it. i still think my 1187 3.5" super mag turkey loads are much worse. its a good thing i only shoot a few of those a year, or i would quit.

    Spare Arrows

I have six, all with Rage except for a field point for the oddball squirrel.
  5. I love how everyone becomes some kind of medical expert with their own remedies when someone else gets poison ivy or sprayed by a skunk. Just very humours. Myself I don't react to poison ivy, i do react to getting sprayed by a skunk.
  6. I'm kinda of the opnion its always worth hunting. Can't kill em if you aren't in the woods. I would def cool that deer down with ice and get it to a processor ASAP in 70 degrees. I would gut it and then skin it too. It just helps cool it down quicker. As for ground blind, I hunt one too sometimes. Some keys to that would be to use some natural cover to help brush it in, make sure you can see clearly out of it in many directions, and if using a bow, make sure you can pull it back without bumping anything. I learned that last one the hard way. Personally, I would hunt on the ground being 7 months preg. I wouldn't want my wife in a stand. just me tho.
  7. I looked this up a few years ago when I lived in TN. Like CCHC said, they are a mutation of the grey squirrel and legal to shoot during that season. However, nationally, western NY is one of only a handful of places that they occur in regularity. I think OH and MO were they only other areas I remember having significiant populations. They are kinda considered a trophy down south, similiar to a large bass or a non-typical rack would be. On a personal note, that color mutation is on my list to harvest. I've got some in my area that I hunt but can never seem to get one.
  8. I always sit past dark anyway. But I would think if you are in the dark, any sound would set them off. I've never been fortunate enough to have this happen. I have gotten down when I knew deer were 50yds plus feeding, but never right under me.
  9. There is a law that you cannot harass a hunter that is legally hunting. I might think that playing the drums or allowing dogs to run free while you are in your stand on your property would constitute harassment. I would talk to the guy first and see if you can get him to cooperate. If not I would call an ECO and file a complaint first and then perhaps a charge later. Also ask about the salt lick.
  10. I always look at it this way: every minute I spend in the stand is one closer to getting my deer. can't shoot them at home. I would prob wait for evening hunt now.
  11. I got em on ebay for much cheaper. I like the malot. If they hold up for as long as they are advertised, then they will be worth every penny. I have no complaints so far. I'd you search the forums we covered these before

    let off %

I have 80%, if I remember correctly, P&Y places an asterisk by anything over 60% in the record books.
  13. I might buy a gun, but I wouldn't buy ammo. Don't know how old, how it was stored, etc.
  14. grats to you buddy! it takes hard work and dedication. now you don't have to hear any more talk of "paying your dues". Gonna mount it? gotta mount your first bow buck.
  15. I hope to hear more about this story. Certainly the family would want to put out some more detail so this didn't happen again. I have a suspension strap, but I think I might go buy one of those livewires for controlled descent. I really sympathize with the family.
  16. I was told by an ECO that they are they only law enforcement that can enforce Federal, state, and local laws.
  17. I vote .223. So much that can be done with that platform, and if you decide to you can even get a top reciever for a .30 cal. near indestructible gun.
  18. Skunk pelts go for about $25 on ebay. i think its more a novelty like for mountain man shows, etc, than it is for fashion. same for possum. As for them releasing all their gas per Elmo, I have a buddy who does pest control and the few times we have put down a skunk, I have not experience that. Maybe it was all "out of gas" when we picked it up, IDK. BTW, possum is about the only thing I have refused to try. IDKY but to me it just seems revolting.
  19. also try camofire.com and can't forget ebay. If you find something you really like and the auction is going to go long, just email the seller directly, sometimes they will close it early.
  20. While the sentiment is certainly one we agree with, I just wanted to pass along that the email is not legit. I hate to be the barer of bad news, but i thought some might like to know that its fictional. Here is the link: http://www.snopes.com/politics/business/valuedemployees.asp
  21. I drew a special archery only permit for the south part of the park. I hunted it last year and saw plenty of deer. I have been afew times recently and seen ok numbers, not what I saw last year. My thought is that since the weather has been mild, they are wandering pretty far. I will be scouting a few more times in the next few weeks, and hunting hard the first week of november. I will let you know what I see.
  22. Yeah, did you get the rack? Call DEC? any followup on this?
  23. I'm getting a Canada done and was on the web just looking for different mounts. I saw this one and started cracking up. Great mount!
  24. I finished all the paper work in Niagara county 5 weeks ago. Last week my instate references got their interviews and my out of state got theirs a few days later. I have only been here 2 years so they said I needed 2 out of state references. Now I sit and wait...
  25. i've always heard it called the baculum. The walrus ones are like 2 feet long and used as a club. http://www.boneclones.com/CFM-05.htm If you look at the second picture, this walrus actually broke his oosik. lol
