We all have a responsibiltiy to try and havest wild game (deer) as quickly and humanly as possible.Truth is it doesn't always work that way.Ya everyone's entitled to their views. But here's something for you to think about. More deer are killed or mamned every yr by being hit by auto's or natural accidents(yes this actually happens to) then hunter's wounding them in a given yr.I won't bash anyone on here but I would ask for anyone posting about a sensitive post to please take the time to think about what your saying and who or what it's about.I have been bow hunting for over 20 yrs now and yes I have lost 1or 2 over the yrs it happens. As long as humans are on god green earth human error will occur we just hope it doesn't happen to often.

What shot makes a deer kick up hind legs?
hb270deermanager replied to older042's topic in Deer Hunting
I have seen deer hunch up and buck up in both cases I feel its a matter of the animal.I have also seen deer drop as low as possible to the ground with a heart and double lung hit.I have seen deer drop and just lay down on a gut shot I really feel it depends on the animal. -

Food plots vs Hunting plots
hb270deermanager replied to G-Man's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I have a rule I use forget all that bait crap I have perrenial food plots for yr round use then in the fall I plant annuals good for drawing in your game later in the yr.usually winter oats, brassalias, and yes planting soybeans later will bring great hunting plot in late oct and nov.I also plant a annual called no plow by whitetail institute in early nov what a fall hunting plot it produces. -
Mahindra,Kubota,Kioti...or Bobcat
hb270deermanager replied to Single_shot's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Ya go with a tractor its many uses and attachments make it the most veritile thing to own. -
You only have 4 acres its still enough to be productive if you wanna hunt it.nows a good time to scout it.Check for deer or bear sign.talk to the farmers around your property.most of all take some time to sit out there and enjoy what you work so hard for.

I just looked over the farm that I am supposed to work on next yr.Its an old horse farm lots of open land out front.A small creek right behind the paddocks then 2 open small fields about 7 to 10 acres then a huge hill in the middle. I found a cedar grove on one end a secluded over grown field in the back and a big stone wall built right through the middle of it.I recomended to the owner the food plot the back field and the smaller field in front.the creek has several natural stand setup points as well as the stone wall.on the northwest edge is a swamp complete with a huge bedding area a great sanctuary spot.I told him with 240 acres its a great piece of property.I told him with about $300 to $400 in food plot seed and some fertilizer he has a great setup and theres room for about 30 stand sites or more.I told him the swamp and thicket is shared another piece of property privately owned and the landowner has over 300 acres none of which I believe he allows to be hunted.I did see posted signs. This is a great piece of land if he does the right things.I think a yr of shooting only doe's trail camming and posting the property will be the best way to evaluate this property.I did not see any new or manufactured stands on it.its secluded and was owned previously by a very anti hunting family. The scrapes and rubs tell me its already home to some nice bucks.I have already been invited onto it but will wait atleast til next season. The biggest thing is this is in the 3m unit. which allows you to have up to 4 doe permits per person.I will set up a full plan over the winter the land owner is pumped and seems willing to do what ever it takes to build a great hunting property. There still is some great land around here. prices are dropping and theres some good opportunities to pick up land.I really feel I can help alot of land owners/hunters. with me experience and I am really be reconized as an innovator in my area.

Ya alot of great suggestions 270 or 30-06 are great reach out rifles not bad on recoil prices are fair and the bullets are still middle of the road price wise.

I recently happened to be asked by way of( word of mouth) by 2 land owners to next spring come in and set up thier respective properties. The white- tail is an obsession with me 365/24/7 a year.I have over the last 7 yrs set up about 6 properties all of which the land owner/leasie are thrillled with the results. I started out in 92 after getting permission to post/hunt a 138 acre piece of property which buts up to my and my dads 12 acres.I wanted it to be the best place to hunt. Its become just that I cleared only about 12 acres for plots thinned the oak groves for better acorn production.Set up sanctuaries.I put in a small deep pond.I even put in a small apple/pear grove this spring I am set to clear another 2 acre area for soybeans and whitetail institutes power plant. I have not charged anyone for my services because of my love for being out there giving something of importance that I feel the need to do back to the great outdoors and others who really want to enjoy it.I feel the bigger the land the better the results but I set up a 10 acre parcell 2 yrs ago and the guy leasing it has taken 2 nice bucks off it with bow the last 2 yrs. I was wondering would it be wrong to start charging for my services or should I keep just doing it as a goodwull gesture to help others have the greatest experience possible too.

God rest his soul not sure what to say.I think for 84 if he was still that active god bless him. It's still a really terrible accident.Safty is so very important accident's can happen at any time its just so unfortunate that he hunted all his life and died that way.My prayers go out to his family.I hope some one somewhere doin the heater in the stand setup takes notice and refects back on this before lighting ther heater.

Ya the does are eating heavy but the bucks keep running in and scattering them.I probably am not helping by driving them nuts with the doe in heat and also this yr I am using code blues grave digger. I made a mock scrape and the next morning(friday) there was 4 more scrapes under the same tree.I have made 2 mock scapes using the grave digger and touched them up with tinks buck urine and crossed my stand areas up with doe in heat(golden estrus) and its driving the bucks crazy but I only hunt the same stand every other day either all day or in the morning or afternoon I have 8 stands in a 10 acre area running a oak ridge above a swamp and bedding area.

Every buck in the county is scraping now I have seen 9 different bucks making about 30 scrapes in the last 3 days but nothing I want to shoot now.I will hold out til the big boy comes in.I read an artical that the peak of the rut will fall somewhere between the 11th to the 17th now is the time to put more time in the woods including sitting all day.I had a nice 7 pt come into doe in heat this morning.

I agree milkweed pods or collect dandiloins when they turn into seed carriers. Both tell you where your scent goes as far as distance.I use both which ever is more available.Just remember to use a good cover scent tinks vanish, dead down wind and scent killer all work good.I use scent killer under my hunting siut and dead down wind or tinks vanish over my hunting siut.I never have any issues I have literalially reached out and touched deer on the ground.

The problem with butchers is that they are assembly line processers. Iknow of several who cut deer up in lots of 10 to 20 at a time assembly line type chances are you dont even get your own deer.Another thing if you pay more than $80 its to much guys charging 100,110,120 then charging $5,$6$7 for a pd of sausge or a pak of jerky its crazy I make plenty of money charging $70 for a custom cut one deer at a time my sausages are $3 per pd jerky is$3 per pak brats are $3 per pd and I make corned venison for $10.There is one thing you do lose alot of weight on a deer simply because they are big boned, and most deer when harvested are young haven't had a chance to fill out yet.Honesty thats just the way it is but I get more meat back then the bigger processers simply because I do one deer at a time and dont hurry the deer down the line to the next person on line.

I dont lease but know a few people who do.If you truly want to lease land do your research on the property surounding lands.check with and check out surrounding land owners.be sure of what you want to do with the land some land owners won't allow you to alter the land(food plot, orchards, ponds etc). Watch leasing land that buts up to state land.alot of times if its not beeb leased or controlled its hard to get the people using the state land to stay off your leased land.I have a by luck setup in the late 80s I approached a land owner because of his over hunting and unsafe land.to my surprise he game me sole access to ploice patrol and hunt the land.I added 3 adjacent properties afterward. The biggest reward is I am allowed to alter the lands how ever I want.I have multiple foodplots, put in a pond, added a small apple and pear orchard.trimmed hardwoods(oaks) better acorn production. So be specific when leasing land know what you want and be sure the owner knows and allows it.

bucks do break racks off fighting but its not as common as damage to the racks when they are in velvet and the other common reason is that the antlers are made of calcium minerals if in a given area certain minerals are lacking it does make for a weaker antler base as far as what is needed to make the antlers stronger.I dont know if anyone hunts around dairy or horse farms but if the farmer put out minerals blocks think back and I bet there were less broken antlered deer around.

Do you shoot the doe if the fawns are with her?
hb270deermanager replied to mossy725's topic in Deer Hunting
I think this is a personal preferance thing myself.I usaully look to see if the fawn or fawns are button bucks and how healthy they seem.I will take a doe with one fawn because the fawn is usaully healthier then a doe with 2.One other thing to keep in mind a doe that has 2 fawns a yr is a prime breeder and will usaully have 2 bucks every other yr.A doe always will rejoin her fawns after being bred so I am alittle more selective when taking doe's I mignt even take the fawn if its a doe and is the only one.my real preferance is to take a yearling doe. -

Hunting Accident ?? in Lewis County
hb270deermanager replied to Deerthug's topic in General Chit Chat
Correct regulations I believe are sun rise which means to me I can see the sun. To sun set which means again to me that the sun has set beyond my sight.I really don't think it means lightt to dark.I have read lots of accident reports and when the low light issue comes up to me no body should for any reason discharge their fire- arm.Its not a matter of I thought or it looked like.Actually this is the time of the day that scares the hell out of me in the woods even if I have a light.I read an srtical one time where a guy shot another guy cause he thought the light was the white flag of a deer.Alot of these type accidents always make think if theres more to the story thats being told. There was an accident in the 80s or 90s near middletown where a guy shot and killed another hunter in low light. After investigating the circum- stances the police found oout that the 2 men had be feuding for over 2yrs over the hunting spot. -

She looks healthy to me.I shot one once as a mercy harvest he was hurting. But she looks healthy does she have fawns that you know of.Its truly amazing what these animals can adapt to I shot a doe once that had about 3 inches of arrow shaft that had grown into her front shoulder.I didn't see any sign of it when I was watching her before I harvested her. It wasn't til I started processing her that I found it she showed no signs of being hurt or handycapped. It had actually healed around the arrow shaft.

To touch on W.I. products again yes I use atleast one annual every yr this yr I planted no plow and winter greens the hurricane and tropical storm slowed them down but the came back.I will say this the W.I. double cross this yr was their first choice over even the clover and corn.
