  1. Yeah if I hit that fawn I would have been upset for quite sometime, so glad I didnt. In all the woods to lay, she had to lay in one of my trails......what was she thinking : .
  2. Well there was almost a fatal encounter. When I stopped my quad to get off, she was literally laying one foot from the quads front tire. She was so tiny. Sorry for the bad picture, taken with cell phone.
  3. Welcome , that is one big bruiser ...where abouts in NY did you get him?
  4. Sounds about right, I can see that pear tree producing in 2 years. It also depends on how much you put into them, I try to prune and fertilize each spring.
  5. i went to walmart in oneonta and picked up a 7' pear tree for only $18 and apple trees 5' tall were $20, great prices. If you have a walmart close by with a large garden center that will be the best bang for your buck, I could not believe the great prices. Not much in the way of pine trees or shrubs however Walmart had hundreds of fruit trees.
  6. Now that you pointed it out, she sure does have a long tail. There are some huge does in our area.
  7. Heres a ten pointer from worcester that I caught on the trail cam in 2009, just take a look at his body (hes long and huge), never did see that guy. I have printed pictures of a huge 8 ponter but nothing that I saved and can show you. Below the 10 pointer is a picture of a doe I saved that is also a hog. And below the doe is a picture from last year, beginnings of a big buck. Enjoy
  8. I'm in the worcester/harpersfield area and I have to agree with all you said, there always seems to be a mature buck shot by us ,a neighbor or somebody I know close by and the corn does seem to sustain the herd pretty well. However I do have deer that continue to frequent my property during the winter and I noticed most of the branch tips of my apple trees are nibbled on.
  9. Very nice deer and mount TailHnt... Thanks alot man. Yours is a hog! That is the thing I like about the deer up in 4F. There are some huge bodied deer (well, huge compared to what I see at home). My 10 point was taken during the rut in 2009. A bleat and tending grunt brought him in on a flat out run, looking for a fight. Got an arrow instead. Worcester can grow them big every once in a while! What is the biggest you have ever seen or heard of come out of there? Yeah I like the fact that a mature buck in my area will be very big bodied. I have personally witnessed a 2 1/2 year old buck that my cousin shot which was every bit heavier then that 4 1/2 year old I shot. I have pictures of some nice bruisers on my trail cam and I actually witnessed a monster on rt. 23 near harpersfield about ten years back that was tending 3 does about 75 yards from the road with not a care in the world. About 6 years ago my nieghbor had told me that his cousin shot a huge 17 pointer near Oneonta, a couple years later I actually met this guy and he whips out a picture of this deer from his wallet like it was a picture of his kid and let me tell you that deer had a huge rack...thats the biggest I've seen.
  10. Very nice pictures....those grouse are some good looking birds.
  11. Thanks Eddie...yeah I'm very proud to have gotten him....he was one big ole boy....Cant wait to get the mount back...
  12. Very nice deer and mount TailHnt...
  13. Also keep in mind that as snow rises so will the reach of the rabbit. As an example lets say your fence is 1' off the ground and you have 8" of screen or anything for that matter around the trunk and you get lets say 8" of snow the rabbit will still be able to get under that fence and still get at the bark, with no screen in sight. In instances where there is a fairly good rabbit population and good snowfall, I have seen rabbit browse lines 2-3' off the ground with bark of trees/bushes all eaten up. However if you rarely see a rabbit, then dont get all worked up and you should be just fine with your current setup. You will have a nice orchard in a few years time.
  14. Looks like you did your research....good job. Only concern I have is that fence seems to be tied above the ground which if you have any rabbits near by they may get to the apple trees and eat at the bark. I run my fence from the ground to about 1-2 feet above the tree and then I would lay rock around the entire inside of fence to keep weeds down and to keep anything from digging up under the fence.
  15. Welcome to the region I hunt in 4F as well...as you may know even within a region sucess/habbit/animal densities and diversity can vary from property to property. Having said that, I think most of 4F is rich in fram land and deer tend to grow fairly large, however on the downside we experience some really harsh winters like one just past which keeps deer numbers down. My family has done very well in 4F for the past 45 plus years, we hunt Deleware and Otsego county in 4F. This past year we did well with 2 eight pointers, 2 three pointers and a doe. Attached are a couple pictures from 2010 season to give you an idea of what you can expect in mature bucks....It also helps alot to get involved in some sort food plot and/or land mgt. program, however I have also had great success hunting adjacent to AG farm land . The 8 pointer strung from the tractor is a 3 1/2 year old and the one hanging from tree is a 4 1/2 year old 8 pointer. Best of luck with your new land.
  16. Wow....those are some great PH levels...that soil saved you a bunch of time and money. I would have expected the soil at best to be in the mid to upper 5's. Good deal......half your battle is won. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.
  17. From my experience with a clover/chickory mix, the chickory didnt die out from mowing however it did not rebound as fast as my clover and the clover eventually took over my plot to the point the chickory is very scarce. In the height of the growing season I cut my clover plots every 2-3 weeks and the clover just grows back much faster. In my opinion I would create two seperate plots or if you only have one site for a food plot I would definitely recommend going with just white ladino clover. In my area the deer use the clover year round or until the snow is too deep. Here is a picture of my clover plot being used in late december with snow on the ground.
  18. For the 1st year of planting clover you will need to add a fertilizer with nitrogen, however the year after and so on there is no need for nitrogen as the clover will produce its own. I'm not a big fan of mixing brasicas or legumes with clover as the clover will need mowing once they get 6 inches in length and once mowed you can kiss any legumes or brassicas goodbye. If you really want to have chickory and clover in your plots you should plant them seperately. Go for a white ladino clover, deer seem to like them better.
  19. Turkey numbers have always been high by me, no shortage of them. Not sure how they faired this year, however they are pretty smart and stay close to the farms and pick out corn from the manure that is spread out in the fields by farmers. I had flock of 13 come right under my stand when I was rifle hunting and I had 2 huge toms that I saw many times during the bow season. Now only if I can find the time in May to hunt.
  20. Thanks John..... my wife and I, family, friends , other parents that have childrens with disabilities along with the leadership from The Center for Justice and Democracy based in NYC have worked very very hard and I want to think all of our hard work has made a difference.
  21. Some great news I was advised yesterday that the governor took out of his budget the cap on medical Mal Practice. Now we are just waiting on the status of the proposed brain damaged baby fund. For those of you who have helped, me and my family Thank you. Regards, Jack

  24. Lately I have been busy reaching out to local assemblymen and writting letters to our governor. I need your help..I have alot of family, friends and co-workers involved and now I'm seeking support from my hunting community....apparently the governor has proposed a cap on medical mal practice and wants to create a Brain injured baby fund as part of his new budget. How does this affect my family, my oldest boy of 9 years has cerebral Palsy and would have had a chance at a normal life had action been taken by his physican and the institution where he was born. How can governor propose a cap on medical mal practice when my son and children like him will have pain and suffering for the rest of their lives? What quality of life will this new proposal provide for my son when my wife and I are long gone? Unlike most of you and I, my son will need assistance the rest of his life and these proposals dont help him in the least. Please write to the governor or call/email your local assemblyman and tell them that you oppose the cap on medical mal practice and you oppose the Brain injured baby fund. If you need to know who your local assemlyman is you can contact a person that I'm working closely with, he is from the center of justice and democracy he can provide you with as much information you need to get started. His name is David Giller Email: [email protected] or he can be reached at 917-710-6476. If you contact David just let him know that you heard about this from Jack, Sal's father Thanking you in advance for your time and support. Jack
