Wow....I didnt even notice your post till now....I picked up the same exact carbine in 9 mm today....hoping to shoot mine this weekend. So did you get the carbine?
-
Just wanted to know if anyone has any experience with this carbine and how does it shoot. I'm hoping to shoot mine this weekend. I didnt want to go through the hassle of getting a pistol permit so I went out to a Long Island gun shop today and picked up a hi point 9MM carbine. I wanted something that I, wife and evetually the kids can shoot and where the ammo would be cheap. I figure with the price of 9MM ammo I could shoot alot more without breaking the bank or getting a sore shoulder...lol. I do have a 22 hornet to play with but ammo is not easy to find and can be a bit pricey. Appearence wise the Hi point looks like a nice little gun to have fun with and the price tag didnt break the bank. I have always been a rifle and shotgun guy, so this is new for me shooting a carbine/ar type gun .

Your own management plan.
NYBowhunter replied to G-Man's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I have 41 acres in total and plant about 1 acre in food plots and half of those plots are planted in some type of fall brassica plot, I'm also fortunate in that I bought my property that is loaded with apple trees. I have owned the property for three plus years now and I'm still prunning the apple trees...lol..Each year I try to plant oak or apple trees, I have 10 or so apple trees that we hope to get in the ground this year, last year I planted a few apple trees and some ivy. I hunt with 2 ole timers that are well into thier 70's (my dad and uncle) and I dont enforce any restriction as to what they want to take as long as its legal. As far as me taking deer, I will take a young buck with the bow (that may change this year) however with the rifle I'm much more selective and I pass up younger bucks and does. As for sanctuaries I have an old logging road that pretty much runs down the center of my property and to one side of the road the elevation increases greatly and forms a ridge this is the side that I may only venture into a few times a year and this is my sanctuary and I would say the sanctuary is maybe 20 acres. For 41 acres we cant complain in all this year I took a 3 pointer with bow, my dad took a three pointer with rifle, my uncle took a 3 1/2 yr.old 8 pointer with rifle, I took a 4 1/2 yr. old 8 pointer with rifle and a buddy of mine came with me during the last couple days of ML and he took a doe. I want to think that all our hard work is the reason for our success. To be personally honest, lately I haven taken much more interest in the mgt of my land.. then the actual hunt itself.. Call me crazy....but its much more rewarding TO ME to harvest a deer on land you know you put sweat and back breaking work into....Many moons ago it really didnt matter how I got a deer......now a days the whole year long experience means much more to me then getting a deer (looking at trail camera pics., planting plots, walking a newly planted plot with the kids, prunning trees, cutting firewood...you get the idea). All I can say to everyone is to respect the animals you harvest and the land you walk on and mostly have fun with family and friends.....you know why I say this because when we are all long gone and six feet under do you really think anyone is going to give a $hit wether you shot a spike or a 150" deer? I do know what your loved ones will remember the memories and fun that were had. So shoot that spike or wait for that giant, its what makes you happy thats what matters everything else is just petty. -
Brush hogged fields
NYBowhunter replied to Single_shot's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
As a note in the first picture I posted, you can see a clear line in the plot where two different plots are growing. To the right is my clover plot and to the left are purple top turnips. The clover will feed deer year round and deer dig through the snow to get at my clover. The turnips are a good late season food source and help deer through the winter. -
Brush hogged fields
NYBowhunter replied to Single_shot's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I personally never used any pesticides or weed killers on my plots only because adding chemicals to my plots is not something I wanted to do. I started out very much in the same fashion as you, in that I had an existing overgrown field that had not been mowed or taken care of in years. How I like to start a plot is to plow a piece of land and let that sit for a couple to a few months, during that time the plant matter will decompose. Then I will go in and plow the ground again, which turns and breaks up the plant matter and provides good aeration to the soil, then I disc the plot and harrow it. Before the plot is harrowed I would add my lime and fertilizer (get a soil test done to determine how much lime is needed to get your soil as close to neutral as possible and the size of your plot and what you will be planting will dicate how much and type of fertilizer is needed.) I have had great success with planting white ladino clover, which will last for many years however you will need to mow the plot to keep it healthy and weed free and palatable to deer and will neede to be fertilized each spring. So what I did was I planted half my plot in clover and chicory and leave another section open where I can turn each year and plant Brassica's i.e. turnips, rape, raddish etc....Hope this helps. Right, because a treestand is equivalent to a human life. : I had a blind stolen from me this past season. I might spit in the face of the person who took it, but I would never condone shooting them. Think I would do a little more then spit in thier face > , but not kill anyone over a stand

I'm gonna say 3.5 based upon a slight sway in his back and beginnings of a belly. I think a 2.5 year would be a little more sleek. If I based my opinion on rack only, that rack would be a 3.5 year old in my neck of the woods all day long.

Very nice pictures.

I use # 6 express for both cottontails and snowshoe's, have in the past killed hare out to 50 yards.

SUNDAY YOTES WITH HOUNDS
NYBowhunter replied to nycoyotehounds..BUB's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
Very cool indeed.....running yotes with hounds must be a blast..Congrats...I'm assuming those yotes range pretty far when chased and you would need vast areas of unbroken public land to hunt them with hounds? Do you chase the yotes up north (adirondacks)? -
Rich I understand the whole bit about making a profit and all, we all need to eat. But you and this guy as owners of a business rely on hunters and alike to make money and you wont get repeat business if you talk to customers in a nasty way. Yes I'm sure there are some real a$$hole nasty customers out there that you have to deal with, but I was not one of them. I politely asked and he rudely declined and what was more upsetting to me is that he did this in front of my elderly parents. When we went outside, my mother said she couldnt believe what just happened. She told me to forget about what happened and just get the deer done. I would have disclosed who this guy was,but at this point I dont want anything to happen to my mount.
-
I totally agree in that quality and a reliable taxidermist is of most importance and I have to say that this taxidermist has done good work in the past. As a paying customer I will not be talked too like a fool....last time going to this moron. Sorry for hi-jacking this thread...so who was it that is responsible for my venting..think it was myself that began the venting..lol
-
I could understand an owners fustration, but you dont treat customers the way i was treated and yes dealing with all different types of people comes with the territory. I guess I was too nice to him and he took advantage of me, if I had another option at that time to take my deer elsewhere, I would clearly told him a few choice words and took my deer elsewhere. I gave him no reason whatsoever to get nasty with me other then politely asking for a discount. Wether he was having a bad day or not I dont care, however one thing is certain he lost a couple of good repeat customers.
-
Why would you expect a discount? Just think how many times he must hear the same thing from his customers. Why would I not ask, I work hard for my money as much as the next guy. If he had given me a $20 discount i would have been happy. Lets make it clear, I'm putting money in his pocket and even if he didnt want to give me a discount that was fine with me but he went about it the wrong way. With his comments alone he lost me as a future customer. You just dont treat customers that way and I dont care how many people ask him that question, I'm not those other people. My uncle has not been to this place in a while (maybe close to 10 years) until this year and what we didnt mention to this taxidermist is that he promised my uncle a free mount because my uncle spent thousands at this place, but we didnt put that in his face, we paid full price and on top of that have to deal with his BS. Its amazing however that after I said I will leave the deer and pay full price he changed his tune and was real nice to me. Sorry but the damage was done and he wont see me anymore after i get my mount back.
-
Mine ran me $485 this year for a shoulder mount (without plaque), which I thought was a little high. However its where my uncle took his buck this year and it was a convienient dropoff as it was on my way home. Not sure if I would go there again, as I asked if there was a break I could recieve seeing my uncle brought his buck there and is paying over $700 for a half body mount, well the taxidermist got a little nasty with me and didnt save me not even a penny. The way i look at is i had the deer there already so i let him do it, however he must be better off then me as he must not need my business and told me to take my deer somewhere else. Guess at that point i just wanted to get my deer done and left it with him anyways. Next time i will be paying Rich a visit of fin&feather for my next mount.

Whats your fav food while in the woods?
NYBowhunter replied to WhiteTailBuckDeer's topic in General Chit Chat
I usually fast while on stand not to leave any scent, but there have been times that I will take some Granola bars. There have been lots of times where I would eat a light breakfast, stay on stand all day and not eat or drink then come home and have a nice supper. -
What really irritates you when your hunting ?
NYBowhunter replied to fasteddie's topic in Deer Hunting
SWEET! That is real sweet.....priceless. -
I have lots of favorites, but thought this one was very cool.
-
Its always exciting when starting a plot, best of luck. Be sure to show us pictures. What are you planning to plant? Have you tested the soil yet?
-
I have a clover plot and next to that I had planted purple top turnips, the deer will eat the turnips tops early but you will have the turnips that will last into late fall and into winter. I'm currently looking into Daikon Raddish for this years fall/winter plot as I have heard they are great for deer, for one they have over 20% protien in the tops and raddish which is very high for any forage plant, the tops regrow after browsed, and the raddish can get as large as 2' long. You may want to plant the Daikons for your fall plots.

Hey Doc no need to look at ole movies, those type of clothes lines are still in use. I have one in my yard

I purchased 41 acres and that was 3 years ago,the transaction went very smoothly, however each deal can be different based upon the agent and how bad the seller wants to sell? My family has been hunting up there for close to 50 years or so from Grand Gorge to Oneonta. I have hunted in the same area for 24 years and I love it. As Tail hunt indicated the bodies on deer can be big however we have taken some really huge bodied bucks and some really heavy does, the racks are average but there are big ones out there like anywhere else.
