Anyone order trees for spring?
NYBowhunter replied to SplitG2's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I will be putting in about 10 apple trees that my father grew up from seeds, they are about 3- 4 feet tall right now. My uncle also has a couple mulberry trees that I will plant. -
Congrats Joe...thats a nice way to get a deer...Nothing like stalking a deer in the snow.

Thanks Doewhacker, thats exactly where we are headed to Whiteface Mountain. Yeah I would expect it to be very cold this time of year....figures my mother-in-law would pick one of the coldest places in NY...lol... guess thats the price we will have to pay to meet Santa...lol... Should I bring my ML??? Oh wait thats the northern Zone right???

I will probably walk and stand some in the AM and then setup close to the foodplots in the afternoon. Yeah this time of year atleast by me you cant count that it will be brutally cold and lots of snow. I dress up at my treestand and put on many many layers. I just checked the forecast and temps are in the teens all week with a chance of snow almost everyday. This time of year with snow on the ground just makes for magical times. -

Best of luck to all. John, Good luck on your 1st ML hunt. There really is something nice about walking in the woods with a semi-primative weapon. I use my ML without a scope to keep it a little more exiciting. I'm heading up for the last two days with a buddy of mine. My buddy has not taken a deer yet this year, so I'm hoping to get him a doe on my foodplot. Besides I rather much he take a doe, as we have not taken a doe off the property in three years. -
You think you all have it bad. My neighbor does not hunt anymore however he shoots everyday like clockwork at 11am and 3pm and when he does shoot his dog goes crazy and barks as well. He saw us this year when we were dragging my uncles deer out the woods and my father told him in a joking fashion that everytime you shoot you make me jump in my treestand, my neighbor just laughed. Then he went on to brag that he is target and skeet shooting and that he has 35 guns.Best yet is that he said when he use to deer hunt, he used a 458 so the deer would not go anywhere after the shot. I'm thinking this guy is a real A$$hole. But its his property and to each his own. I guess I'd rather him traget practicing then hutning....lol...Just as a side note his everyday shooting does not affect deer movement on my property.

The farmer down the road from me uses another approach to deer control, he leases his property to a LI hunting club and with the help of his family they take 30 + deer each year from his farm. No Nuisance Permits, just alot of hunters. The farmer told me that he needs that many deer gone each year just to keep the deer population in check. The farmer said that even with this control, he could go out on any given night and see 50 deer in the harvested corn fields.

Culver that is one pig of a buck....Congrats....very nice wallhanger. -
THANKS EVERYONE....I got caught again this morning looking at the pictures and my wife said you looking at those again, she said you dont look at me that much...lol...I was cracking up...I'm sure alot of you guys can relate to this... Just got off the phone with the taxidermist and he aged the buck at 4 1/2 yrs old and he said a game biologist came by and aged him at 4 1/2 as well. I had a feeling he was 4 1/2, he has longer main beams and tines then the 3 1/2 year olds I have shot. Not intentionally, but guess I stepped it up a notch this year. They are out there, but this guy sure will be hard to surpass..

Those are the kind of hunts I like, short and sweet. Congrats.

My Uncles told me stories of a place in the Catskill region that took place many years ago where a guy would guide you into the mountains for a deer hunt that was all done by horseback. I think it was along rte. 42 if I'm not mistaken???
-
Sorry to hear that...hopefully you will get him with the ML.

Its just as easy to skin and quarter a deer on the ground as it were hanging. The only difference with skinning and quartering on the ground, you better have a good back and knees . The 8 point my uncle shot this year went to die in the ditch next to the river on my property and I could not get my ATV down there. I dragged the deer to the other side of the river and started to go up the other side of the ditch, but it was too heavy for just me to handle (my dad and uncle are in their 70's). So what we did was use about 50 plus feet of rope and tied it to my dads truck which was at the top of the ditch on the road and got him out that way.....that was the hardest retrieve yet.

I use the Bushnell Trophy Cam, best thing are its tiny tiny size, fast trigger speed and batteries last forever. It takes 8 "AA" batteries, I put the camera out in May and I just replaced the batteries this past weekend, I think 7 1/2 months on one set of batteries is not too bad and a couple of those months were in some very frigid temps. I'm thinking about getting another one. Unfortunately the Moultrie I40 that I had only lasted 2 1/2 years, the LCD screen did not work anymore, it was taking very few pictures and was not taking any pictures at night.
