  1. probably the same deer. During the winter the coat is thick and longer, hiding the stump a little. I have a buddy who has been seeing a deer with a broken front leg for 3 years now, the broken leg i suppose healed on the inside with the bone still separated, so the broken leg just flops around. Miraculously, this animal survived whatever hit it and is still feeding in his yard
  2. If you did not fill your regular season or bow/muzzy tags last year you can use them from sept 27 till sept 30 THIS year (last week) in the northern zone early season bow.
  3. however if you have both bow & ml privilege, you have to follow the tag, antlerless only is still antlerless only in early season.
  4. you are correct doewhacker, never really looked at that one being in unit 5J, I just automatically throw the un-used doe tags out after not using them by the end of last season.
  5. :-[ Also, you can use the left over doe tag but the deer must be killed in the zone the doe tagwas issued for, there's only a few areas of NZ that have them, unfortunately not mine I ended up throwing 2 doe tags in the trash last year. :-[
  6. You can use your leftover bow or reg season tags from sept 27 till dusk of sept 30 in the NZ early bow, as well as your leftover bear tag. if the bow tag is antlerless only, then only good for a doe, your reg season tag is good for buck or doe.
  7. 9/30/10, first deer of the season for me....... Burnin' up those leftover tags from 09'
  8. I was really pleased with the performance of these broadheads after reading so many pro's &con's about them, bottom line..... they did the job right! I have no problem spending the money on them seeing how quickly and cleanly they put that deer down. The blood trail left behind was impressive too, even with all the rain we had. I recommend them highly!
  9. Great start! I smoked a bit smaller of a doe last week too on the leftover 09'-10' tag, coming in for the apple tree! was my first deer with the new Mathew's Monster 7.0 and rage 2 blades, I was very happy with the results! Clean pass through and the deer ran only 25 yards before crashing. The broadhead was still intact and with a new o-ring and rubber band, could be used again but I'm changing the blades anyway.
  10. What up Redneck, If you point the gun at him you can be charged with menacing (unless you can prove you were defending yourself from bodily harm) I have thought this one over hearing peoples stories and I would say the thing to do is have a camera or a cell phone with a camera with you so you can get a picture of the piece of *%$# or even his back tag to give to the cops, even a license plate #. The only way to keep them from RE-offending is to follow through with prosecuting them for trespassing. When they KNOW you will, they probably won't be back.
  11. Rain, Rain, and more rain! Didn't see a thing during my 5 hour morning sit or my 5 hour afternoon sit. Made for a long day.
  12. Stands are ready, gear is ready, honey-do list is done till after christmas, been shooting the new Mathew's Monster all spring and summer (wore a whisker bisquit out) so my shooting is all set. The deer are moving as predicted & my vacation has been approved for all next week. 6 days of nothing but bowhunting starting Monday the 27th.
  13. I work at UA, too many ticks in the pine bush for me though, I can't concentrate on watch if I'm constantly picking ticks off me. Not a big fan of state woods either, nothing like getting in the woods before light and setting up just to have another hunter come in and set up 50 yards from you 1/2 hour AFTER light. I've only lived here 7 years now and through meeting new people and asking permission, have more places to hunt than I have time to hit each season. Being close to the northern/southern tier border is a plus too, twice the opening weekends.
  14. NYDeere: Assuming the older gun is a hawkins' style, such as the one in my picture above, You can either shoot the balls or the old Maxi-balls, NO saboted rounds. My father in law always made my maxi balls for me, they are 325 grain. I used them with 100 grains of pyrodex powder and it hits the deer like a locomotive. I also ALWAYS unscrew the nipple and tap in a little powder under the nipple. TRUST ME..... this will save you a lot of heartache from misfires!
  15. Hey Doewhacker, I'm in Galway but also hunt Schoharie County, Brunswick, Charlston, Northville, Otsego as well.
  16. Thank You and Yes, NYDeere, It's a T/C Hawkins 50 cal, she just dropped after being hit with a maxi-ball. They grow em' big up here burmjohn, I've killed 5 or 6 does that big with the muzzy/bow over the last few years, perfect for harvesting. She was post-reproductive, no fawns and no milk either.
  17. Thank you, he was actually taken in Kansas in 2002, I was on a job site out there for 10 months and wasn't able to get back to NY to hunt, so I got a non-res kansas license and through the generosity of a very kind land owner, got permission to hunt his 70 acres. He weighed in at 264lbs dressed and scored 162 Boone & Crockett. It's hard to find land to hunt out there without paying an exorbenant amount of money because there's a big market in kansas for leasing land to hunters. But there are still some very nice people! I invite this guy out here to NY every year (he wants to shoot a bear) but he hasn't had the opportunity to take me up on it...... I owe him big!!
  18. It's all in the setup, if you have the right tools and space for the job, it makes a world of difference. I prefer to bone out all the meat rather than band saw chops, etc. I average 6 to 8 deer a year between my wife's and my kills. I've cut up so many of them now I could do it blindfolded. And if I am in a hurry, I could take one from the hoof to the freezer myself inside of 90 minutes. Once you skin it, carefully slice along the spinal column down to the top of the rib cage and peel the backstraps off. Then, if you pull the front legs outward, you can see exactly what you need to cut the front shoulders off. Then carve off the brisket and neck meat (which really is only good for stew or ground) and throw it all in a pile. You should have removed the tenderloins when you gutted the deer, they run on the underside of the spine in the kidney area.At this point you can saw off the rib cage from the hind quarters. Sometimes I just bone out all the roasts on the hind quarters as they hang still connected, sometimes I'll saw right down the middle and separate them. Then just find your way between the roasts with your fingers separating the silver skin that divides them and cut where you need. It takes some practice but that's the only way to learn. Then you can cut up the roasts, or trim them and leave them whole. Hope this helps.
  19. not sure what happened above, I'll try this one again.
  20. Nothin' like cleaning up all those extra tags during the late season muzzy!
