  1. If all of you out there have a week going like mine, I thought you could use a chuckle..... A cop stops a Harley for traveling faster than the posted speed limit, so he asks the biker his name. 'Fred,' he replies. 'Fred what?' the officer asks. 'Just Fred,' the man responds. The officer is in a good mood and thinks he might just give the biker a break and, write him out a warning instead of a ticket. The officer then presses him for the last name. The man tells him that he used to have a last name but lost it. The officer thinks that he has a nut case on his hands but plays along with it. 'Tell me, Fred, how did you lose your last name?' The biker replies, 'It's a long story, so stay with me... I was born Fred Johnson. I studied hard and got good grades. When I got older, I realized that I wanted to be a doctor. I went through college, medical school, internship, residency, and finally got my degree, so I was Fred Johnson, MD. After a while I got bored being a doctor, so I decided to go back to school. Dentistry was my dream! Got all the way through School, got my degree, so then I was Fred Johnson, MD, DDS. Got bored doing dentistry, so I started fooling around with my assistant and she gave me VD, so now I was Fred Johnson, MD, DDS, with VD. Well, the ADA found out about the VD, so they took away my DDS. Then I was Fred Johnson, MD, with VD. Then the AMA found out about the ADA taking away my DDS because of the VD, so they took away my MD leaving me as Fred Johnson with VD. Then the VD took away my Johnson, so now I am Just Fred.' The officer walked away in tears, laughing...
  2. I agree Doc. When they get comfortable with human presence the normal banging a pot, yelling or just seeing us doesn't work. I went on a baited bear hunt in Ontario Canada and the guides were telling me stories of small bears (under 200) following them to the bait stations. Then after the first night hunt they hand me a bag of ground meat and tell me to rebait my spot in the morning......pucker factor of 10 making that walk in the dark...bait in hand and gun unloaded. I wouldn't want to wrestle with a 50 pounder to say nothing about anything bigger. It was worth the walk though....a one time thing....not my kind of hunting
  3. Relax Larry...It was all tongue in cheek. He isn't the only handicaopped member of our Govt...Personally I think they all are.
  4. I like a 6-1/2 foot medium light action rod. I have never had much luck with combos. I would stick with a spinning ste up and realls are like optics....very cheap can cause you a lot of frustration. I have SHimano reels that have a trigger attachmnet that allows the bail to be opened with just you casting hand. ...been a while but about 50 bucks. If you had to chince on one or the other....spend the cash in the reel. For reference and by no means the only choice-- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_102802_100001000_100000000_100001000_100-1-0 http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_99228_100002002_100000000_100002000_100-2-2 6'-6" 2 peice medium action line weight 4-12....will do anything you want....I have landed Steelhead and salmon with mine...I hae this same rod.. Good luck and enjoy.....I love fishing...especially hard water
  5. Here are the 3 best we landed this year... two at Ontario and the one in Ogdensburg....East shore ...(south end on the Rip Rap) of Otisco Lake casting large Rapala tye lures after dark should be good right now
  6. Hey Rag742.....waws that suppose to be "cannot be used on private land" or "Can be used on Private land" during regular archery. Anyone havea link to the formal signed law....I can't find it anywhere...may not be posted yet......The dog ate it....JK...I really want to read it
  7. Gov's signature?????...Hell it will take him until November to find it on his desk....
  8. FLight is perfect. the rest sits out in front about 3 inches but it is just aligned high. I was toying with reducing my poundage to force a lowering of the pins but that kind of defeats the speed capabilities of the bow. That is why I opened this topic to read it...might have to buy a new one....I hate the thought of having a new toy... ...I just don't want to run into the same issue again. Anyone in Rochester area have a shop they use and recommend?
  9. Great list and comments guys...I love my Bowtech Blacknight with one issue and I don't want to run ito it again.....the sight picture is very small. my site pins are right at the curl back of the riser...if that makes sense. I am right handed and the riser goes up and curls to the left....my pins sit in that corner and limit my sight picture...anyone ever run into this?
  10. I can't believe the money hungry group in Albany didn't find a way to squeeze some more cash on this...go figure. So sis it going to be a legal implement in regular season , bow season or are they opening a special season?
  11. LOL...I agree....conversation over a couple cold ones at a bar bragging about it should be avoided. Personally I hate to see it go to waste but I probably would want to butcher it and have it in the freezer. I think the best way to avoid a problem is really monitor what you have around you house that could attract them.
  12. Well my uncle has Hypothyroidism and can not tolerae hot or cold temps. Another long time friend of mine has Raynauds disease (Scleroderma) and cold affects his fingers trerribly. And yes it has caused them to quit hunting. couple thes with age and a few other issues and the warm weather of bow season would make a difference. And again you show your "absolute" views..."any 12 yo can draw a 40# bow". That is not true. She didi take a turkey this spring and did very well witht the 20 gauge but was sitting and supported off her knee. I imagine a lot like many of us do when hunting out of box blinds she would use a rest. I have to take exception on your easy route comment too. What is this sport all about anyway? We must have been brought up very differently because I was shown a sport that was first about time with my family... enjoying the outdoors...learning the basic woodsman skills... safe gun/bow handling....and if we were lucky maybe enjoy a dinner of our harvest. So having a youth learn all of that and placing a crossbow in their hands is the easy route and shows no committment? Practice is practice and the most important thing we should be teaching our kids is everything right up to the point of the release or trigger pull. I respect your right to choose what you do with your kids but I find it troubling that in this opposition you would impose your beliefs on others. I personally don't and won't hunt with one...but it should be just that my choice.
  13. Doewhacker...Gotta disagree with you on that one....DEC or no DEC I will decide if something is a menace to my family. People that let others decide for them are called one thing in life......victims
  14. Chevy. That was a fairly absolute comment. I believe it will increase numbers. I know from my circles that some older gents I use to hunt with can not tolerate the cold gun seasons anymore so they do not hunt. They also can not pull a bow anymore. So they do not buy licenses anymore. I also believe that youth would benefit from the crossbow and increase their interest. My neice would love to hunt with her father but can't draw the bow due to her small frame. For the youth the hook is there getting game. just like fishing. Most 12 year olds will will get bored and lose interest if they are not catching fish. They would rather catch a 100 perch than fish all day and catch 1 quality Steelhead. I just can't see the opposition of the inclusion as a legal implement. There is a spot for it int he seasons. I am not advocating a 100% head to head with standard archery but why not someplace.
  15. I do agre with Doc on the Bows only in Bow season....My point is there has to be a spot for this to be included. It only makes sense. Give the Cross bo an inclusion in the lsat 7 days of bow season...or allow it in the late bow muzzleloader. Why not as a legal implement during regular season. I would think the State would be drooling over the prospect of another $$$$ stamp.
  16. I really can't understand the opposition...With Hunter numbers on the way down and our sport always in the crosshairs of the Left....I would think we would want as many people coming into...back into.....the rich heritage we share. No on is "requiring" you us any hunting implement. It is choice...isn't that what we are all about, or at least should be. If you don't want to use it ..don't. Having just come off our Independence weekend celebration. I wander if our forefathers would have shared any views here. Would they have looked any of the repeating rifle manufactures in the eyes and said "nope..not interested". Regardless of any of our views, if we frame it inside one question we can't go wrong. "What is best for our Sport?" And in this point in history Best is numbers and fostering a growing interest.
  17. No disrespect intended, Doc. I have a huge respect for the people that can master the "primitive" tools. I use to shoot longbow. I moved into compound and loved it. To be honest anyone that says shooting a compound is just like a long bow is very wrong. Truely primitive...no sights and no releases is a lesson in mandatory practice. I just didn't have the time anymore. Family...work....work...more work..lol. I would have no problem with them setting aside a primitve season....even for muzzleloaders (because the inlines with scopes have the same relation the compound had to the long bow. I beleive the cross bow should be a legal implement. Maybe allow it during the open gun season or in archery only areas during the normal gun season. Or allow it during the late archery season when the woods are shared by muzzleloaders anyway. I can understand the argument about not letting it in with normal bows but I sure would like to enjoy those autum hunts with my fater again.
  18. Thanks Fast eddie. Lots of work and lots left to do but we are in it and can enjoy it now while we get it done....paint and flooring this summer
  19. I remember a time when the same pure blood elitists thought long bows and recurves were the only "honorable" way to bow hunt and really spoke out about compounds being an unfair advantage. I do not really have an opinion either way on the crossbow topic but it seems from the ads I see they both have about the same stats in speed and energy. My Dad had to give up Bow hunting because he can’t pull it back any more. I guess I would like to be able to bow hunt with him again.
  20. They must have gotten a lot of flack about it. I just checked the DMV site and you are correct WNY. The press release I saw said it would be mandatory and that seems to be backed up by the DMV site. The State cancelled the "mandatory" part....election year...lol
  21. I spent a lot of time on craigslist....a lot was free stove 75 cabinets 100 things like that I used metal roofing as siding. the trim on the roof and j stop was full price but the metal siding is random runs from a rmetal roof place in Rome. no warranty but who cares. The stove was 120 new at Lowes on line and the triple wall chimney was 100 on craigslist. So framed, enclosed, on concrete peirs, insulated and OSB interior (b4 the price skyrocketed on it) about 6 grand we have added propane lights and a 12 voly DC system including a water pum out of a 275 roof water holding tank. We are a mile off the hard road with no available utilities. bunk room sleeps 4 and 2 in the loft
  22. I am going down to my camp this weekend. I will post some pics on Monday. I had some great ideas that worked out really well. Mine is 12x24 with an enclosed porch that is 8x12. very comfortable with 4 guys for the weekend and we have hunted 6 out of it with out too much trouble.
  23. They can give you a ticket if you have a ball that mounts ON the bumper in the hole in front of the plate. I got a ticket on my motorcycle for a ornamental frame around my plate for the same thing...got it thrown out but still a pain in the a$$. The judge told me that even the frameas that the dealers put around the plate can be ticketed....all mine ar off now
  24. NAY---just another way for the Communist State of New York to squeeze a few more bucks out of everyone
  25. Food for thought and not sure if they are still made but my buddy bought a muzzleloading barrel for either his Mossberg 500 or the Remington 870. worked great ans the frame was the same as he was used to. As far as TC...I own one. GREAT shooter. THey are pricey but I saved an extra year for it. I wanted the ability to add the rifle barrels and pistol barrels. There is one manufacturer making rifle barrels for their frames but the TC has more calibers available. There are several manufacturers making barrels for them. .17 cal to .416 if I recall correctly. I have added a .243 and a .300 win mag to my muzzleloader barrel
