Each of us need to ensure we pass on what hunting is all about to at least one other. I hunt at a camp my father and I just built and my buddies think I am nuts because of the GREAT hunting I have at my house. They can't see me driving 2 1/2 hours to maybe see a deer. Most of them fall into the "modern" hunting philosophy of make it guaranteed success and in a hurry. Heck I fall into it too to some extent. But what is ultimately important to me is the time I am able to spen with my Dad hunting. I have been doing it since I was 8 and I don't know how many I have left with him...hopefully a lot but I will never take a single day for granted...He has given me a lifetime of memories as well as the guys who shared the woods with us. And a side note on all the moder gadgets and such........with all of it. If a deer could hold a weapon there wouldn't be a hunter left in the woods...lol

Do you support the small Archery Shops ?
Culvercreek hunt club replied to fasteddie's topic in Bow Hunting
Probably the same place. They we on Senaca in a old warehouse right hear Norton. They have a pile of fishing and bait. Not sure if it was their fathers first but I have been going there since 92 and they just move to a new place last year...1449 Norton Street. I shot in a winter league there for years but once i started traveling for business I had to drop it. Nice little shop. There was just a shop that opened by me in Henrietta and I stopped in to see the guy....seemed nice and he is closer for me but old loyality dies hard for me. -
I use the one pictured here.....trust me guys there is a release there

Doc...not sure where you are in Western NY but in Rochester try JayVee sporting goods.. Dan and Rick has always treated me fairly and gave me great service. I have yet to shoot at their range at their new location but I know they have one. I bought my last 2 bows through them and was never disappointed -
You guys ever catch that fishing show with the 3 gals...did alot of fishing in the Florida flats and their uniform seemed to always be a bikini. Wasn't on for long but was worth the DVR space

Do you wear Orange? If so why? If not Why not? :)
Culvercreek hunt club replied to TheHunter's topic in General Hunting
I waer an orange vest of very thin nylon type material. I wear it to and from the stand or if I am tracking or generally walking. Once in the Stand I reach above my head and put it around the tree I am in or in front of. It fits nicely and provides a BIG orange block but I don't have to worry about looking like something flashing with my body movements. -
Stand Strategy Dilemma
Culvercreek hunt club replied to Culvercreek hunt club's topic in General Hunting
They aren't 100% bean. I see them back off when they brown also but they seen to return to pick up leftovers at the end of gun when pickings start to get slim...assuming they aren't plowed under. This farmer is not plowing them under this fall. I have stand at the corners and at both ends of a brush corridor through the middle....just damn frustrating. same issue last year and when they can just wander in any place they wish it turns into a crap shoot. Thanks -
The only one I was toying with that MIGHT give the guy a pass was this....close range....quartering away and deer with turned back looking behind him or back over the shoulder....or up at him over his right shoulder....but I still don't get the not waiting...That is the crap that makes hunters look bad and the only stuff you hear about. I'd bet you are right WNY though...looking at him ready to bolt.

OK guys here is my problem. I have four feilds all soybean....the deer are pounding them. I had a hard time finding a time to hang trail cams without busting deer out of the feilds. the is a small strip of boarder brush...about 10 yards around the feilds...after that no permission to hunt. Surrounding area on adjacent property is classic thick bedding area. The perimeter is LOADED with trails entering the beans and every night they seem to take a different route into the feild with no pattern that I can identify. I don't have enough stand or cameras to cover all these entry points....very frustratiing trying to corner something entering a 80 acre area. I got 2 cameras up last night and about an hour later they came into the feild from the opposite side....11 bucks last night and I know 3 are probably 120-130 and the BIG boy is all of 150. Any advice on cornering these guys?

The ULTIMATE Tick & Mosquito Repelent!
Culvercreek hunt club replied to Geno C's topic in General Hunting
How is the scent Geno? and where do you get it? -
Sorry forgot tto paste http://deerstandplans.net/

Seriously though...check out this site...has a pretty cool "lock on model" made of wood. Looks kinda heavy but I don't think anyone would steal this one. I think you would probably need a come-a-long from a higher limb or strap to get this baby up the tree
-
I'ts comfy but the heater doesn't work and it needs a new exhaust system so the deer don't spook

I am with Geno.. a section of the forum would be great. I think I am more likely to try a recipe if it comes recommended from someone who has tried it.

My wife can't understand how this stuff tears me up and how beautiful I think these animals are and can go out and hunt them. I guess not being brought up around hunting she will never get it. I agree with you Geno...no way the shot should have been taken. any scenario I play out it appears to be a poor choice even considering any deer movement at release of the arrow. I have taken 2 bucks I had no desire to harvest because of wounds inflicted on the opening day barrage. both were obviously wounded and one was just like you described in the gut shot comment. I can't understand why some won't exercize that few seconds of restraint to assess if they can make that clean kill.

Everything I see on Monroe COunty website talking about hazardous materials says...call 911. They have a list of things and give how to get rid of them ...from oils to paints to tires and betteries.....for ammo...black or smokeless powder it says call 911. I can just see that conversation........I have a .22 cartrige that won't fire......DO you think they would send the sheriff out for that?

Now that was funny ....Eddie

Amen Geno....Think he could have made the shot if he were carrying a cross bow?...LOL...Sorry I had to

It is from a tracking string. My cousin hunted with one until he missed a bruiser because of it. arrow got almost to the deer and there must have been a knot or tangle in the spool that mounts in the stabilizer hole. The arrow flipped and he swears the knock hit the buck...no damage but he sure did cover some ground never to be seen again. Seems like a solution for a problem that doesn't exist....I prefer the KISS principal....Keep It Simple, Stupid Nice buck...wonder how old the wound was?

Trigger....nice bucks...they all NY?
-
Geno....I have yet to see any pics but rumor around town is that a local took a monster non-typical with his bow. Took it on the state land on the back side of my property....supposedly a 17 pointer that you couldn't come close to wrapping your hands around at the bases or at mid beams. But like most "stories" I believe it when I see it. I got some good bucks on cams down there but they evaporated during the season

If they wanted to start a special season for spear hunting I would be all for it.....not going to practice it but if you have the brass cohonies to try this....I applaude you http://www.huntvids.com/video/64/Black-Bear-hunting-using-a-spear
