Governor requesting Compromise on Crossbow Bill
beachpeaz replied to SteveMcD's topic in General Hunting
I agree in part to this. I personally don't want people using a cross-bow during archery because it is damn near a gun. I watch people shoot 80-100 yards with them. They have SCOPES! It is not "archery." On the same token, my father is 73 and can't pull back a standard bow. I would love for him to have the opportunity to hunt with me during bow season. There should be some exceptions to the law by application and just cause only. -
agree with mxsmitz201. I have watched that show only twice and one of them was Chipper missing a deer at 25 yards and laughing about it. the other show he shot a 135" 8 point. Haven't watched it enought to know if this is standard though. People like Stan Potts, Bill Jordan, David Blanton, etc are the "commercial" people. They are like the Walmart of the hunting industry.

I am glad I am not the only one! I am guilty of watching those shows cause I am a fanatic about hunting, but they irritate me. And, even though I am realistic, they have changed even my perception of deer. I find myself being more and more picky and it pisses me off. I could have shot a dozen more deer than I have, but I have this vision of shooting the 120 or 130" buck and missing out on the 150" that may be by later.........which usually doesn't happen. Oh well. Good discussion topic though. Was curious what peoples thoughts were and if I was alone in my thinking. LOL@Newbreeed. You are dead on brother. I would chip in to fund that hunting show! What is everyones opinion on the Deer Hunting shows on TV and the unrealistic perception they put out to hunters that the whole world is crawling with 180" + bucks and 150" 10 pointers are just babies that need to walk? I personally think these shows are a joke and am tired of them. These guys spend $10's of thousands of dollars (which they fail to mention), hunt private property (which they fail to mention) and are given the best stand location so the TV Show gets good ratings (which they fail to mention), and, a lot of these places are doing year round suplimental feeding programs to increase antler size drastically (which of course they don't show). They make these TV Hunters look like GOD's as if they are good hunters to have a wall full of monsters when it has nothing to do with the hunter, but the circumstances they are provided. Let them come hunt my property in NY and see how many 180" deer on hanging on the wall!! Not that they are not around (I posted a picture of a 170" deer on my trail camera in the "trail camera" forum last year), but that is only the 4th or 5th buck in my lifetime I have seen that big (Not 30 of them running around the same property) every year. I wish I could remember the name of the show, but there was one with a hunter up in NH. It was a great show. Only one I have ever seen about hunting the North East. He shot about a 140" buck (and considered it a monster) and he said, and I quote "In the real world where I hunt, this is a big deer. This isn't the midwest where 150" deer seem to just wander around lucking for a hunter to shoot him." LMAO. AMEN!! Thoughts?

My draw length is 29 1/2" and my bow, although suppose to be 60# was actually measured at 64#. The specs I mentioned earlier are 400, 8.4 gpi. They are obviously a carbon arrow (don't know the manufacturer though). Just know that they were $75 for 6 of them and they were definitely several levels up from the cheapies they had at the bow shop.

Does anyone watch Mythbusters? For those of you who do, you may remember an episode where they tested about every scent elimination technique known to man. They then went and hid about 500 yards away and had a dog see if they could find them. The dog followed their exact trail without hesitation right to their exact location every time. Was rather interesting. I know, I know, dog vs. deer argument.....but I would bet a deer has as good of a nose as a dog if not better. I do the whole scent elimination thing (laundry, shower, spray down, etc). It can't hurt. The bottom line...if a deer Is down wind of you regardless of your precautions, your gonna get busted. Maybe not every time, but a majority. My 2 cents.

wasn't looking for "correct for set-up," They are matched to my bow and draw length. Some people were mentioning switching to a heavier arrow. I figured one of those numbers were the weight, but I don't know what an "ideal" weight is or what people generally shoot.

The bow shop I purchased my new bow from recommend the Grim Reaper mechanical blades. It is a 3 blade head. it came with the "dummy" blade to shoot and make sure it is sited the same as your field tips. I have NOT shot a deer with the new blades yet, but the "dummy" shoots exactly the same as my field tips. Reading everyones posts, I am a bit nervous on these Grim Reapers now. They seem solid (and when I broke one, the company replaced it no questions asked, which was good Customer Service). hmmmm.......

A couple weeks ago I posted "opinion on sighting in new bow" and got lots of great advice. Several people asked about arrow weights and I had no clue. I checked my arrows and they have the following: 400, 8.4 gpi 2 questions: 1) What does that mean? 2) What does everyone else use / recommend?

some good pics from the last few weeks

Pretty 10 point. Nice view. -
How hard you going to hit early October mornings SZ?
beachpeaz replied to phade's topic in Bow Hunting
I agree with everyone on some level. You NEVER know when a deer will walk by! That is a fact. And, if there are other hunters in your area moving the deer around, you definitely don't know what might get kicked up. If you are lucky enough to hunt property that you have NO competition, and you have all the time in the world to take off from work and your family, then I would wait until closer to the rut when the weather cools down. The early season bucks are extremely noturnal. They have no reason to move during the daytime (other than pressure). If you are in and out of your stand every day hunting deer that aren't moving durning the day and you do this for 2, 3 or 4 weeks, they will just relocate and be gone! With that said, I am not that lucky with "competition" so I will be in my standing opening morning and as much as I can be for the entire 6 weeks! -
yeah, speed means nothing to me. That is what it is advetised at. Who knows what it really shoots. Just know that it is WAY better than my old bow. I bought a Block Black. My old bow would stick an arrow in the target a bit. This bow, it takes 2 hands to pull them out. They go half way through. its crazy. Anyways, thanks for the arrow weight knowledtge WNY. I will look into that. I am a student of everythign i do. I always try and learn. so, I appreciate everyones insight.
-
Thanks. I'm still learning this whole bow-hunting thing. Been 3 years now. I am very comfortable out to 30-35 yards. I practice at 40 and can make the shot at a target, but who knows about a deer. I am sure that my Bear Anarchy at 345 fps shooting 50, 60 + yards is no problem but I am not good enough to take that type of shot.

Thats why you have to blind fold him first...them jump on him
-
Another good point WNY. I am not sure what weight the arrows are. I jsut know they are expensive compared to the aluminum arrows I was shooting with my old bow...lol. I am ok with it shooting flat though. I don't want to mess with the weight to calculate drop. i would rather jsut know the drop from the yardages. you all have given me some good insight. Growalot. When i firrst set up my 20 yard pin i started like 5 feet from the target and kept moving back (didn't want to lose my $15 arrow). I would say that from 5 feet to 25 yards it shoots within a 2 or 3 inch range. Not concerned at all about the close shots. (I can always just jump out of my stand and wrestle him to the ground too...haha). That is why I come here and ask! I think I will use just 2 pins, figure out where the second one is dead on....36, 38, etc. And then jsut keep shooting alot to know where my arrow hits from 10 yards all the way to 40 or 45. Bow hunting is a lot of instinct. THANK YOU everyone who posted an opinion.
-
lol. my old bow was like that Advanced. As I mentioned, I used all 5 pins and had them spread accross my site. I wouldn't shoot a deer more than 35 yards with that bow (at least i say that without one standing in front of me). This new bow you could probalby shoot well past 50 or 60, but the stacked pins drive me nuts! That is why i was wondering what other people were doing. I like the 35 yard pin idea. Gives them a little space.

The old expression is you can't fix stupid. lol. Not saying that she is or isn't in life, but when it comes to huntiing she obviously is. If she ever got caught she could lose her liscense for life, have her guns confiscated, get a hefty fine adn possibly serve some time. The DEC takes that crap seriously! And, I agree with what others wrote....I am proud to have harvested all of my deer on unfenced property without baiting or shady tactics. I watch TV shows where these guys are shooting 200" giants and it is just a high fence and a whole lot of suplimental feeding. A farm basically. BS.
-
Ya Know Advanced, for as simple an answer that is, I never thought of that..lol. I apparently live in a world of even numbers and never considered just making it a 35 yard pin. I agree, i definitely don't want a pin closer than 20. Even at 20, I don't know how you could miss (I damn near double stack my arrows at that distance). I will try that pin at 35 when I get home. Thanks!
-
thanks. That is what I have been doing this summer. I set a 20 and 40 pin and have been using them to shoot 30. I am never more than 3 or 4 inches off shooting at a target. when my 215" Gross Typical Giant walks by me at 27 yards this fall, I am sure i will miss by 5 feet or so and blame it on your advice...lol
-
I bought the new Bear Anarchy. I love it. I don't know what size pins are on that site. I didn't realze you could change them out. I don't thinkt here is anything wrong with being off a couple inches. As a gun hunter, you learn to compensate for all distances (and given the kill zone is a good 6" circle, its not a big deal). With a bow, I just wasn't sure if people compensated or adjusted their pins differently. I have been shooting it all summer and keep moving it around playing with it and haven't really settled on the "best practice." Was just curious what other people did.

don't mess with a hawk! lol.

Assistance Please.... I bought a new bow. It is scary fast. I transfered my Tru-Glow sight off my old bow. It has 5 pins, of which I used all 5 of on my old bow. On my new bow, I am only using 2 pins out to 40 yards. I have my 20 set dead on. It shoots so fast that I can't get my 30 pin close enough to the 20 pin for the 30 pin to be dead on. If I shoot 30 yards with my 20 pin, it shoots a bit low (maybe 2 inches). if I squeeze a pin as close as I can to my 20 and try and use it for 30, it shoots 4 to 6 inches high. I then have a 40 pin set dead on. So, the question is... What does everyone do in that scenario? Do you leave a 30 pin and try and shoot low? Do you use your 20 pin and try and shoot high? Do you elimiate the 20 and make it dead on at 25 so you shoot real close (within an 1") at both 20 and 30? Any advise you experts have would be helpful as I have only been bowhunting for 3 years now. Thanks!

I agree 100000%! I made this mistake in the past when i checked my cameras too much. it shifted a couple huge booners just enought to not pass by my stand any more. I am much more careful now with the cams.
-
I have the exact opposite problem. I get tons and tons of pictures of the same deer. In fact, I have 4 cameras in the woods (the farthest distance between the 2 is probably 1/2 - 3/4 of a mile) and I have repeat deer on those too...lol. I usually know every deer in my area within the first 3-4 of having my cameras up. After that, I get 3 monhts of the same deer over and over again (which is good I guess because you know they are still around).

i am surprised a couple people said they would shoot him! He is only a little 6 and probably only 2.5. (cool, granted, but still).
