  1. Do you know the facts? He had a permit to hunt in one zone, but killed it in a different zone. It was a matter of a couple hundred yards difference. He was trusting the "expertise" of his guide, who obviously wanted his client to be happy with his hunt. He found out after the kill it was a different zone and took the advice of his guide and lied about where it was killed when he was asked. That's what got him convicted. If he had told the truth, no charges would have been pressed against him. The media is calling that "having a criminal record", when it appears to be more a guy with a lot of cash and trust, who can afford to hire guides to put him on trophies that make him feel like a really accomplished hunter. I'm sure most here would trust their guides just as much, and would be the first to blame the guide if anything went wrong.
  2. Once again, it is alleged the animal was illegally killed. At this point, two people have been arrested, the Dentist isn't one of them, and no one has been convicted. I find the lynch mob attitude surrounding this case to be disgusting, and a clear sign to every hunter, you are being threatened.
  3. Read on how PP is an organization with great political might and deception. http://www.lifenews.com/2012/10/05/false-abortion-is-only-3-of-planned-parenthoods-services/ http://www.abort73.com/blog/planned_parenthood_and_the_percentages_of_abortion/ Regardless, if Gillibrand is on their side, she's a shill and needs to go, because unfortunately, her head isn't going to do us a favor and explode.
  4. Quite a few American humans have pulled it off.
  5. Junkie, I'd like you to show me any real evidence the GOP is trying to allow pregnant women to get fired. As far as Federal Funds for PP, there should not be any taxpayer money spent on anything the government sees as benevolence, when it is really a social agenda and thinly veiled vote buying scheme. You're using a chart supplied by PP here. Do you trust it? This comes from their own annual reports. "Planned Parenthood continues to claim that abortion is three percent of its services in the 2010 report. By comparing the number of condoms, birth control pills, and other low cost items distributed to the number of abortions it commits, Planned Parenthood intentionally misleads the public and those in charge of providing government funding for its grisly business by painting a grossly inaccurate picture of what its business is all about. By comparing PP’s abortion income with its clinic income, we get a much more accurate picture of Planned Parenthood’s business model. In 2010, Planned Parenthood’s abortion income was 51.5 percent of its clinic income." PPFA Annual Reports via Life News
  6. When you've got $200,000 for a Mercedes, what's a mere $50,000 for an African "Safari"?
  7. And that guy was also relying on the "expertise" of his guide. A short while back, there was a thread about using guides for hunting and I said I don't use them. This is just another reason why I don't think it's a good idea.
  8. I'm not defending him, I'm being an American and assuming he's innocent until proven guilty. I don't see the media, the anti-hunting folks, or you doing that. The government in the African country he shot the lion in does NOT have an arrest warrant issued for him. No African country has an arrest warrant out for him. They may want his testimony and he's offered to cooperate. Nobody from Africa has contacted him as of this date. A similar situation exists near Yellowstone, where huge Elk often leave the park and are killed by hunters. How long before an Elk, that's been given a name by anti's and fitted with a collar, causes the same issue here? A few years ago a hunter legally killed a huge Black Bear in PA, that people had become familiar with and named. They went after him like he murdered a neighborhood child! If hunters start to fear having their lives ruined for taking a trophy animal, hunting will become a past time of such regulation and scrutiny, very few will be able to participate, if they can't afford a guide and a lawyer. Guys like this are currently the target of anti-hunting organizations world wide. I wouldn't be surprised if nobody is found guilty of any crime, in any of this. But I believe if no crime was committed, the anti-hunting groups should be sued for libel and slander and made to pay millions.
  9. Cashing in on evil: "Right now, Republicans in Washington are pushing legislation allowing employers to fire single women for getting pregnant — AND they're leading an 'investigation' to undercut Planned Parenthood. This makes my head explode. I’m confident that if we had more women leading in Washington, we would not still be dealing with the right wing’s efforts to trample women’s health care." —Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) in a fundraising email
  10. I wonder if this story being blown out of proportion by the mass media is designed to distract the public from the current Planned Parenthood fiasco. Seems every time a darling of the Left comes under attack, an incendiary counter point will suddenly come out of nowhere. The Left supports abortion and the Right supports hunting. Seems like a case of, "Oh yeah? Take that!"
  11. This is another case of the anti-hunting crowd grabbing any story about hunting and running with it. The goal is to change the perception of ALL hunting in the eyes of the public. It's hate mongering and persecution. I'll bet they hope some animal loving nut case kills the Dentist. The anti's call it passion and dedication to their cause. I call it illegal incitement and radical extremism. What all hunter's should come away from this story thinking is, "There, but for the grace of God, go I." Someday you may find yourself in the cross hairs of animal rights extremists, even if you didn't do anything wrong.
  12. With all due respect FSW, since you are in the business, your posts are the ones that bring it into the conversation. It's impossible not to think of your business when you post anything involving deer, or deer hunting. I was not ranting, just making an astute observation about the value of huge antlers on a deer that's been killed.
  13. It may have been impossible to see the collar under the mane. I don't see it in any of the photos of the lion that were published.
  14. FSW is looking for someone to say it's the big antlers that a deer hunter wants. Every deer hunter hopes for a buck with a huge rack. But a huge rack on a deer that has lived for many years in the wild, indicates a deer that was an exception among deer. It had to be very wary, wise and even lucky, to grow that big in the wild. Taking such a deer can indicate a great deal of skill on behalf of the hunter who killed it. It could also be a case of pure luck on the hunter's part too. Huge antlered bucks on commercial preserves are not of the same description. Taking such a deer on a preserve requires a great deal of money, and not much else.
  15. What I find interesting about this situation are the allegations being leveled against him. Apparently, his guide set up outside the park, in an area where it is legal to shoot a lion. This lion had almost wandered out of the park into legal hunting area before, which it could easily do. It was being tracked constantly by the people who collared it. It did leave the park and go into legal hunting area when this American Dentist shot it. He claims he did not know it was a lion from the park and relied totally on his guide's expertise. Did he break any laws? If so, what laws? A lot of people are getting bent out of shape about it, but they are making up a lot of derogatory, clearly false, claims about what actually happened, trying to destroy this guy's life with those claims. Seems more like revenge from animal lovers than justice to me. Personally, I see the attacks against this Dentist being more disgusting than his killing the lion.
  16. What's the difference between Woodchuck, Porcupine, Red Squirrel and Coyote? Answer: The first three can be hunted year round with no limit. What makes the predator Coyote special? I saw this in NJ with people protesting a bear hunt too. Why are bear different than deer as far as hunting them as a game animal? The answer is, they're not. Not hunting a specific animal the same as other animals in the same general category is a decision based on emotion, not wildlife management. There is no reason not to allow coyote hunting year round in NY State IMHO.
  17. I enjoy Grouse hunting more than anything. Deer hunting becomes what I do most once the season on them opens.
  18. Wooly, your post actually preaches we do have a coyote problem.
  19. Every Ruger M77/22 Hornet I ever saw in the laminated stock version with the grey metal finish was totally accurate. The same applies to any Ruger rifle, in any chambering in that configuration. Perhaps he had a bad scope. If not, it should have been returned to Ruger to be checked out.
  20. I have one in 22 magnum and it will do one ragged hole at 50 yards all day long with a variety of different ammo. Was your's used when you bought it?
  21. Maybe you don't have a problem in your area, or perhaps you choose not to see it, but doubting that others do have a problem in their area, is blind denial. Define it simply as an over abundance of coyotes, far beyond the carrying capacity of the area, causing a great deal of ecological harm by their presence. They may disappear on their own in time, but only after they have devastated the area.
  22. Seeing no poults at all this year so far. Did find a few nests that were destroyed in May and a few hens that were killed. We have fisher around now, as well as the usual fox, coyote, coon and other assorted varmints. Not sure what the biggest issue is. Perhaps it's a perfect storm combination of all of them.
  23. From what I've seen of the science, once coyotes enter an area, they will continue to reproduce until you have a problem, whether they are hunted or not. Hunting them will not control them as quickly as one would hope, especially if year round hunting isn't allowed. But every indication points to the fact they must be controlled by aggressive hunting once they invade a given area, otherwise they will surely become a major problem. The question becomes, how many in a given area becomes a problem? I believe that can only be answered by the inhabitants of that particular area.
  24. True and fairly common? Someone here is suffering from cognitive dissonance alright, but not the folks who understand the connection between politics and quality of life, for hunters as well as everyone else. Hunters who like to think of themselves as possessing a superior mindset to all of their hunting peers, especially the ones who constantly try to elevate their status in their own minds by stepping on everyone else, are suffering from a serious superiority complex that has no justifiable foundation. It's a fairly common malady, but it doesn't represent millions of hunters. Even if an overwhelming majority supports a lie, it's still a lie.
  25. Shawnu, if you want my comeback, you'll have to scrape it off your teeth.
