Winchester 243 how good or bad for deer and range
Grouse replied to phantom's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
A high velocity impact from a .243 at close range will ruin plenty of meat, especially if it's a shoulder hit. I always opt for a neck shot with a .243 at close range. -

Winchester 243 how good or bad for deer and range
Grouse replied to phantom's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
Black bear are not very hard to kill. The problem with using a .243 on bear is the lack of a blood trail. Bear are notorious for not leaving a blood trail when shot with a 12 ga slug, because the fat closes up the wound quickly. A .243 will not leave a blood trail on a bear, but neither will most centerfire rifle rounds. -

Winchester 243 how good or bad for deer and range
Grouse replied to phantom's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
The .243 became popular with hunters as a dual game animal rifle. It will take deer and it isn't too big for varmint, coyote, bobcat, raccoon or porcupine. It is popular with people who want an all around rifle in NY. Deer hunting with a .243 requires the bigger bullets available, from 95 grain and up, and a Partition or Barnes copper bullet would be a good choice. Any all copper bullet would be a good choice. To use it specifically for varmints and small game, the smaller, lighter bullets work well, especially when designed to fragment on impact so you don't have to worry about the bullet traveling further than the target after impact. I once had a Winchester Mod 670 in .243 that wouldn't shoot the lighter weight bullets well. I think the accuracy was affected by the bullet having to jump farther from the chamber to reach the rifling. It shot heavy bullets well, but was not accurate with varmint bullets of 75 grain or less. It was terrible with the Remington Accelerator bullets that used a sabot and 55 grain bullets. Since the rifle in question is light and compact, that would make it a pleasure to carry while hunting. That's an advantage. It will have less recoil than a larger round and shoots flatter than many at longer ranges so that can help you be more accurate. It can be used for more animals than deer without overkill, so there's an advantage there. The only thing I disliked about the .243 was meat loss when the bullet hit bone or was fired into a deer at close range, due to the high velocity of the bullet. If you handload you can drop velocity down to 2700 FPS or less for deer under 100 yards and not have to worry about meat loss or losing too much penetration. For close range work, I chose a neck shot to avoid meat loss. I never had an issue with lack of penetration using a .243 with 95 grain or heavier bullets. If the price is right for that rifle, I would not pass it up. -

Don't expect the truth to come out. The left controls the media, the AG,s office, the DOJ and the FBI. They will tell you what the "truth" is, even if it's a lie. They did it with Hunter's laptop, Joe's Ukraine corruption, Russia, Russia, Russia, Epstein's death as well as his list of friends, etc., etc. High level law enforcement officers are political appointees. They are not elected. They serve the people that put them in those positions, not the public. They are not going to tell you the truth in this case. When we had real journalists in the "4th estate", they would uncover the truth and expose the lies. But we haven't had real journalists in main stream media since Watergate and the independent one's are silenced by Big Tech. Truth is no longer what motivates media. Money and an agenda are.

Why are they not counting Biden's lies?
Grouse replied to Grouse's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
I still remember quite vividly all of those here who hated and laughed at Trump, in spite of all the warnings against not re-electing him. It seems some people never get the message and cannot think for themselves. They seem to subscribe to the BOHICA mentality. Hey, it's a free country. (You're free to do whatever they let you do, and they will let you bend over.) -

Like Airedale said, most are complacent, until it starts to affect them, and by then the price of gas, food, housing and property taxes have already gone up and the Feds are coming for your freedom. Almost forgot to mention the rising crime level. -

How many like minded people here that love hunting and freedom? Quite a few. Not you of course Bowman. Advice for people? I think the worst vice is advice. I would post more outdoor related info if so many ankle biters didn't chew up whatever I post with snide remarks and foolish comments. I truly feel if those are the only members reading them, they're not worthy of them. If members who would appreciate those posts ask for them, I'll post them. But I don't see many requests, so I don't. "Friendship of one wise man is more precious than the friendship of many fools." Democritus -

Notice who tries to distract and misdirect the thread. Must be die hard Biden supporters, or they wouldn't even come to the political section to post their whining. Why don't I do "Live from the Woods"? Because I LIVE in the woods. I've been hunting for 52 years now and could tell stories about hunting for days that would make you envious. But I have two great loves in life, hunting and freedom. That's why I follow politicians and the government. I can multitask, meaning I can think about both at the same time. I think both are very important. My schedule is not like most, I can hunt or fish from Tuesday noon until Friday noon. Those are my times. I love being outdoors when the weekend warriors are not. It's much quieter and I can really concentrate. I don't have internet access when I'm outdoors, and wouldn't want it if I did. I'm out there to find peace and solace. Respite from all the lunatics that infest society, as well as interaction with people who don't interest me. I'll post things about hunting that impress me. Or maybe a scene like my driveway on a nice morning. I'm not interested in critics. I'm here for like minded people. -
