Interesting, my wife uses a Marlin Bolt in .243 85gr Spitzer she can knock a flee of a cats butt @200yds so I don't see an issue with her shooting deer put the crosshairs on the head done deal. Flinching on the .308 for youngsters, my 15 yr. old Daughter shoots my .308 and she is 5'8" 120lbs, having said that my rifle is NOT your out of the box 5lb hole driller it weighs 17lbs so the recoil is much less. Flinching can be over come by practice and proper gun handling, practice is the key. .300 Win. Mag. IMO over kill.
uh oh, you may have opened the head shot debate with that one........

I say you should go in and confront them....

Sounds like you regularly shoot fawns by this post and "tender vittles" post. To each his own, not bashing anyone who shoots fawns or shoots does with fawns in toe. Just not my thing. I don't process my own deer so I also look at the $ to get a big doe processed vs a 80 pound deer. I hunt for freezer filler, 2 feeds us for the year but 3 would be ideal. I don't need to eat venison that bad however. I'll pull the trigger on what I feel comfortable pulling the trigger on. Some guys only shoot big bucks, some guys have the "brown it's down " attitude. I passed on 6 small bucks in first 3 days last year :spikes , basket racks, buttons . Had these been big bodied deer with small racks they're getting toppled over. everyone has different "trophies"
not at all....just having fun with those who think deer are traumatized or die if they lose a loved one......I've been around long enough to have heard every comment possible that people use to justify taking or not taking a deer, not that they have to, but they do...once again just having some fun with it.....

I just came up with a new excuse if I shoot a fawn......all I gotta say is "some prick killed it's mother and either I put him out of his misery, or he would have died a slow lingering death from loneliness and depression."

In my experience, meat from fawns has been tender enough, but tends to be LESS flavorful than adult venison and there's not enough of it.
I much prefer an adult doe. Never ate a doe I didn't like. I never remember having a doe that was especially tough, either, but I've had a few bucks that were on the chewy side.
yeah, I find the same...it kinda has a pale look to it and lacks some flavor, if I shoot a fawn I always say "it's gonna make for some mighty tender vittles".....helps me sleep better.

Here's why I'm not in favor of 1buck per season. First let me state I haven't killed 2 bucks in a season since 2004 and when I say season I mean bow, gun and late bow- ML. I hunt 9p so I don't get a dmp every year and I have 2 kids. If a big 10pt comes by in bow season I'm not going to let it pass. Now I can still hunt in 9p where camp is even if I don't have dmp. With a 1 buck rule that means I'm not taking the time off to go to camp if I can't hunt. That means my kids don't go if I don't go. DEC says only about 5% of hunters kill 2 bucks in 1 year. Buck don't control herd size.
you only take your kids hunting if you can still kill something?....that's not really a good rational for wanting a two buck a year rule.

holy crap! you killed the whole family!.........at least they got to spend the holiday together.
Last year, the day after thanksgiving...-

I really try not to form an emotional attachment to the animals I'm hunting......if I have two dmp's I'll shoot the fawn as well as the mother so it won't get depressed and suffer if that's going to make some sleep better at night, what's next not shooting ducks and geese because they sometimes come in pairs? wouldn't want to turn Ms Mallard into a widow by killing her husband........and shooting a turkey out of a flock in the fall? that's not for the faint of heart, I did it once and all I heard afterwards was the mother hen calling for hours trying to get the flock back together, I almost stuck an ice pick in my ears to make it stop....heart wrenching for sure.

how do you know they're cops? did you confront them and they identified themselves or is that what you heard?
-
a little off subject, but last months NY Outdoor News had a photo from the past submitted by a guy who bought it at an antique shop and he had no info on it, it was taken in East Islip on Long Island......I have the same photo on my wall with a couple relatives in it and know the full story, so don't be surprised if someone knows the whereabouts of that deer.

You can use your regular season antler tag in bow only sections (8c). At least that's how read it
true, but the bottom line is you can only take two legally antlered deer......when you can take them differs by area.

Doe I shot opening night had zero fat....I was surprised usual have a good amount by now.
she must have heard we're in for a mild winter......

Thats a great crossbow, from everything I have ever read about it. Id pony up the extra $100 and get the one with the accudraw though.
I looked at some models with that and didn't like the way it sat against my face....maybe there's left and right hand models?..........nevermind, just watched the video and its on both sides of the stock.

NY deer should be fat at this time of the year regardless. They are fattening up for the rut and winter.
right, my point is they fatten up no matter what because that's what they do....it has no bearing on what type of winter we're going to have.

I would have no problem with a one buck a year rule, I would think that someone taking two mature bucks a year is worse for the herd than someone taking just one of any size.
-
I notice a lot of people commenting on the amount of fat on deer and it being an indication of a bad winter on the way. Is that really the case or more a matter of there being a bumper crop of food to be had? I mean, does a deer decide there's no need to fatten up because it knows that it's going to be a mild winter?

I have a Horton, which is a budget crossbow, unfortunately they stopped making & servicing them. No problems with it, shoots great, rugged, dependable.
My first crossbow was a Barnett, a true lemon. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone.
Wicked Ridge is Ten Point's economy line. I will probably get one of those when my Horton dies.
I think Horton may have been taken over by Tenpoint/Wicked Ridge..........check out Cabelas, they have an offer up that if you buy one of the two, you trade your Horton in and they give you a voucher worth a couple hundred bucks.
-
I was at Dick's yesterday and they have this Tenpoint which looks nice and for a decent price...........anyone have experience with Tenpoint crossbows?
-
I bought an Ameristep.......used it about 6 times before it started to fall apart, so I don't recommend one of those.

aren't the tags good for either sex during the youth season?
-
no, my fantasy's do not include anything even close to football......
-
what state, if you don't mind telling?
-
you really need to read the regs. yourself to get the correct answer...someone who is on Long Island may give you a different answer then someone who hunts upstate. L.I.'s archery season is actually their "regular season", so both regular season and bow/muzzleloader either sex can be used to take bucks during the same season.

Hunter's Beware!! NYS is terrible for deer hunting, don't waste your time travelling to this State if you want to harvest a deer.....turn your attention elsewhere.

Crossbow setup question

how do the deer react to the noise, I've heard the recurves are quite a bit louder than the compounds....haven't made up my mind as to which I'll purchase yet.
