  1. I don't understand the hundred dollar license cost vs deer or number of deer killed. If I take my wife out for a nice dinner that will last about an hour and cost about a hundred dollars. Or if we go to a concert that lasts two maybe three hours and costs way more than a hundred dollars.

How can hunting for about two and a half months even if I choose not to shoot a deer, be considered a bad deal for a hundred dollars?

I will always respect the fact that we are all different and hunt for different reasons.

As long as its legal, there is no wrong way or right way, good or bad way. It's just hunting.

I agree, if $100 is that important to you that that's the reason you take any deer, maybe the $100 should be spent on more important stuff that you need.

  2. I hunt with this old Marlin 1893 in .30-30 just for fun sometimes.  It was made about 1922 or so.  It is very accurate and the 26" barrel really gets the most from modern rounds.  It really hunts well too as it's got good balance and a very slick action.

that's a nice looking gun...sometimes the gun you take an animal with is more satisfying than the animal you take.

  3. the amount of money I invest in a license and other expenses plays no part in my need or explanation for taking any deer.....as said before, some hunters spend enough money between travel, equipment and travel to far exceed what they get back in meat from a deer. I wish I had a choice of taking any deer I choose, but unfortunately mandatory antler restrictions took care of that in my area...unlike many other areas, my license doesn't allow me the luxury of taking any deer I want, so I'm glad money or meat isn't an issue, otherwise I'd be more pissed off about the restrictions.

  4. Here's the definition of hunting:

                                              v.verb

1.To pursue (game) for food or sport.

2.To search through (an area) for prey.

    1.n.noun

3.The act or sport of hunting.

4.A hunting expedition or outing, usually with horses and hounds

It doesn't say anything about antlers

do all animals or birds that are hunted have antlers? maybe there's a definition of deer hunting somewhere.....

  5. although the game farm industry may bring in a lot of money, I think it's chump change in the grand scheme of things, and if the gov't decides that it's a major problem as far as CWD goes, I think they can make problems for those who make money off of it..whether it be a total shutdown (unlikely) or demands that are too costly too many.....they've crippled may industries before and can't see this as any different....this isn't a dig towards deer farms, but what I see the gov't capable of no matter what the business may be.

  6. i have yet to see that be the case. how do you get the bloat smell out of the meat? my butcher will tell you to feed it to the coyotes. there is a reason to why you gut, skin, and get cooled.

75% of the butchers who pop up before the season are fly by night operations who will butcher anything you bring them.....I bet there are more foul smelling deer brought in that aren't quite fresh due to poor handling than being left overnight and get a little bloated...not to argue that proper care isn't important to good venison, but that's probably the least of the reasons that deer aren't properly cared for....and leaving a deer overnight in cool enough temperatures will not spoil it to the point of being inedible or get you turned away from a butcher.

  7. well, if you wanted to hang a stand close to his, won't you be hunting the property line as well? I have no problem hunting property lines as long as you have no intention of shooting a deer that may go die on his....I sit property lines facing away from the other property, I was questioned once about this by the other landowner and simply said "would you rather I sit 100 yards away and shoot towards your property?" keep in mind the way I expected the deer to travel was not in a direction that would take them onto theirs, just thought of safety and where my shot would travel.

  8. Just got back from were I shot her cleaned up all my tissues marking the blood trail. As I was down there I went down wind and didn't smell anything dead.

Also no crows in sight. Maybe she survived?

there is a very good chance she will survive and all the tracking and help would not have made a difference.......people get cut badly every year and bleed like stuck pigs, receive no medical attention and live to tell about it, you made what seems like a very good effort...don't lose any sleep over it....it's a clean cut, not like a gunshot that fills the wound with hair and othe crap, there's stories every year of guys taking deer with healed over wounds and broadheads left in the body and when they shot the deer they appeared perfectly healthy, move on and go get one.

  9. Stubby don't have anything to compare it to...he is the only time I had to call...and was very very professional about the whole thing...when he called the DEC he gave my name and tag #...had all paper work filled out...but seeing I would be the one getting ticketed I'm glad he insisted I had the permission first...I'm glad he wanted to inform me and show me about how shot placements can differ than our perception and told me they are trained to listen well and figure out what really happened at the shot...

when I belonged to Deer Search I had the form for the hunter to sign stating that they had permission and that was supposed to put any trespassing violations fall on the hunter.

  10. Running deer with dogs is something everyone should experience once. It's not something I would prefer to have as a lifestyle every season, but it is a method that seems to be more focused on group success rather than individual success, which I digress seems pervasive here in NY and isn't always the most enjoyable experience for me either.

You want your heart pumping, take a stand and wait til you hear the dogs. When they're coming in hot toward you, its not unlike hearing the crunch crunch crunch of frozen leaves here before knowing what it is.

I would love to experience that....buckshot and all!

  11. You other guys that are chiming in saying it is worth $400 and up have to remember that in a barter deal like this it has to benefit the contractor more than the customer because the contractor would be better off with the money and not dicking around trying to get even money for the gun.  It HAS to be a deal or its no deal.

    Get it?

I agree, I would take that as meaning the guy is tight on money and looking to save some by offering something else...if he wants $400 tell him you'll knock $250 off the price or no deal...gotta ask yourself what's more important, if you're starving for another gun go for what he's asking if not, the ball is in your court so play it accordingly.
