Here is a picture of the bone structure. I think you hit the wide bone in the shoulder , scapula maybe is what its called.
or clipped one of those "fingers" that stick up off the spine....that'll drop them on the spot, but they'll recover quickly and take off.

my guess is you hit in one of the vertebrae, that's what knocked it down due to the initial shock of the arrow impacting close to the spine and is what also resulted in the lack of penetration and broadhead snapping off.......

Really? You get what you pay for. I keep reading that in this thread, so, I am going to make a comparison, and not about bows.
So, you think that Cadillac Escalade is really going to get you through the tough spots a Jeep with a suspension pack will? Don't think so!
have you seen the sticker prices on some of the new Jeeps? certainly not cheap by any stretch of the imagination.
-
yup, you drilled him....nice job.

Slick Trick....because it works.

W/ youth bow, had trouble penetrating spine and thick muscle of shoulder from above/stand-horrible experience of lost/injured game.
From the ground, was able w/ light bow from ground "button hole" the animal, clean kill double lungs in and out of rib-cage.
I didn't think it would matter till it happened to me.
Not saying it's gospel, perhaps anecdotal, but I'm not shooting deer from a stand w/ my youth bow any more.
I don't think the youth bow was the cause of the loss......many setups will fail with less than ideal shot placement.
-
I would not recommend this. If you know you've gut shot him and don't know where the 2nd arrow is, you are better off waiting until the morning like you plan. He will die, just needs some time.
agree 100%, leave him be till morning and you'll likely find him dead in the first spot he lays down.......push him too early and you'll chase him into the next county.
-
the gut shot will kill him........question is how long will it take, give him plenty of time......only good part is the second shot should give you some blood to follow.....I think the terms "drilling" and "slamming" are something you would use when the shot is perfect.

distemper is what the majority of raccoon's have that is usually mistaken for rabies.......they act almost the same. I don't think rabies is that widespread on L.I.
-
I wouldn't be too concerned about getting bitten by a rabid deer..........

When I used to hunt the Charleston State Forest, the Hughes Road area was full of this stuff. Let it be! You have no legal right to remove this tape. I get the point, and I hate seeing it too. But, out of respect to other hunters, I would have never removed it.
what are the legal ramifications for removing it? I would think cleaning up the forest is better than hanging that crap and not removing it when you're done.

I think it's gonna be a lot closer race then many anticipate....

Well you should read my original post then because I quoted someone else who was questioning the mans buck. I myself think it is great and I'm glad he got to take that deer
if I misinterpreted your first post I apologize.........but that was not the way it came off to me.

I just got my license Friday. I asked the guy at the counter the same question. His answer was that it will be sometime after the 1st. It very well could be the 1st of November but the DEC like to play the cover their ass game and make the answer as clear as unclear can be
well, if you just got your license Friday, you won't be considered when they mail out extra tags for the areas that didn't give out tags for the hard to get areas,....only the areas that have unlimited doe tags, I may be wrong, but that's the way I see it.

My name trophy hunter is an inside joke with some friends that has nothing to do with why or how I hunt. And no it wasn't a trophy by most peoples standards. Any other questions you want answered since your persistent on turning this into a pissin match.
I don't need any questions answered...was just wondering why someone would question this guys accomplishment if they themselves may have a few flaws..I never question anyone's taking of a legal deer whether it be big or small.
-
Yep coyotes gotta eat to
well, since you're a self proclaimed "trophy hunter" you can understand why this guy is proud of this deer, no? was the one you crippled and left to die a trophy? because unless you're perfect, don't make stupid comments about what another hunter chooses to shoot.
-
they usually put out a press release with areas that have leftover tags.......they also mail out tags to those who applied and were denied the first go round.......and yes. usually after Nov 1st.
-
I find it odd that the guy who printed the article knew this would blow up, yet he chose to put this kid out there for people to attack..while a nice trophy, I think protecting our children should come first.
-
You mean another mature deer killed for its rack which benefits the deer herd for years to come.
didn't you cripple and lose a deer a not too long ago? what was that one shot for, the coyotes?

if you do decide to tell the landowner, mention to him that it may get him in trouble as well to have feed and or bait on his property.
-
I like to collect those cat's eye things and orange flagging tape, I have a whole box full.
-
they've been checking taxidermists and processors for years.........and I'm pretty sure I've seen press releases on summonses issued by the DEC to include failure to report, I'll see if I can dig it up.
-
serious question, how does it find it's way into the deer farms?

So do take the time to explain how they know, in advance, what variant strain of flu is on the way.
We'll wait.
they know because they take the jar off the shelf and release whichever strain they want right around "flu season"......duh
Is bear meat worth the effort?

I don't think you can tell they're worm free unless you roll the dice and eat it cooked rare..........unless you sent a piece of it to a lab for testing.
