  1. Wild Cats & Dogs can be a real nuisance, especially out west. Might be a bigger problem someday in our area, who knows? When I was in Wyoming the outfitter told all hunters to shoot feral cats as they were destroying the bird populations in the area. When I was in Arizona wild dogs were an issue attacking cattle. I saw one cow with its ear hanging almost down to the ground from wild dogs.

The NYS ECL allows you to humanely kill any cat hunting, killing or possessing any protected wild bird...........it used to allow you to kill dogs found pursuing deer within the Adirondack or Catskill parks, but that seems to have been amended over the years.

  2. The first time I walked intoteh deer woods with my Father I was 8. That was 40 years ago. I have been there every season since. I hear shooting. The land we lease boarders about 2000+ acres of State land but the shooting is nothing like it used to be. I can remember years ago you felt like your head was on a swivel looking to teh sounds of the shots around you. I can remember state land and there were deer running every which way all day. Opening day. and then it turned into a desert.

After opening weekend I take a ride around the block when we head out for water and groceries and the state land usually doesn't have any cars parked there.

you just described the exact way I remember it......times have sure changed.

  3. go talk to him in person, it doesn't really sound like you had a bad encounter with him........sounds like he was doing what every other person does when trying to get the ok to use private property, they offer to help out in any way possible........just because he identified himself as a LEO, doesn't mean he's going to break your balls about stuff.

  4. I love watching the flashlights in the distance at 7-730am when its already light. It's a hunting club and they always seem to come in late and definitely push deer towards me

only thing better is the low roar of the ATV's at the same time, as they drive directly to the bottom of their stands...............

  5. The first step should be contacting the landowner and finding out exactly how far he is willing to go with allowing you to enforce the trespassing problem..........he may very well turn around and say it's turning into too much of a hassle and tell you to stay off as well, I've been there.

  6. Anybody ever consider that this might just be another case of a deer "jumping the string"? From video that I have seen, there is no doubt in my mind that it is a very real possibility. Especially a deer turning and dropping to flee.

yes, it could have been caused by any of the many unintentional  things that can go wrong when shooting an arrow at a deer........nothing to suggest that it was intentional. Someone stated earlier that they hope they catch the guy who did it........can you imagine if it became a crime to make a bad shot on a deer???????

  7. talk to the landowner and explain to him what happened and find out exactly how far he is willing to let you enforce the trespassing problem. I would guess if he really doesn't care about what's going on, and is not willing to give you the authority to enforce it, you're gonna have to live with it...........I belonged to a hunting club that had a lease for 25 plus years, lost it when one of the members went a little to far confronting a person he found on the property, turned out to be the property owner's cousin who had permission to be there (we only had exclusive rights to bird hunting).

  8. NOT TRUE. It is a genetic fact that they can breed and have fertile offspring. The reason it is not common is because social habits differ and a coyote would rather hate a dog than mate to it. Breeding cycles are different.

    Coyotes or Coydogs?

The large canid which resides in New York is a true species; they are not a hybrid. The proper name is the Eastern Coyote, Canis latrans. Coyotes and dogs theoretically can interbreed to produce what is called a 'coydog'. However, these crossbreeds have a reproductive cycle of dogs, not coyotes, and will give birth at times of the year when the pups cannot possibly survive (i.e., January). In addition, there are behavioral differences between dogs and coyotes which prevent crossbreeding from occurring. Coyotes want to mate with other coyotes and not with dogs. Coyotes are actually more likely to prey upon a domestic dog instead of mating with it. It is in this manner that dog genes are prevented from entering the gene pool of true coyotes, maintaining the two separate species. Coydogs occurred at the leading edge of coyote range expansion during the 1950 to early 1970's. The occurrence of a coydog would be an extremely rare event in New York today.................................I got this off DEC's website.

  9. They call those guys Coy-dogs by me...where my property is, it is the last property off a dirt road with a right of way through a neighbors property...people would drive up our road, let the  dog out,  then drive away, we've seen half breed coyotes with all sorts of dogs up by me...

i love dogs, all of them...if you had a dogs nose and energy and were let loose on a huge piece of land i'm sure you would start sniffing and maybe chase a deer...ITS THE OWNERS FAULT IF THE DOG IS LIKE THAT, NOT THE DOGS...to say you would kill a dog, pretty much for being a dog, is mind boggling. People in my opinion do more harm than the worst dog...personally i think there are more people who should be shot than a dog....

I've never been much of a believer in the existence of the "Coy-Dog"............to believe that, you would also have to believe that a stray dog would be welcome to join up and live with a pack of Coyotes. I would think Coyote's would kill and eat a dog before they would even consider breeding with it.

  10. If I had to deal with this owner I would start out by handing them the Pics to prove the dogs were there and then I would really take the approach that you are having your property heavily trapped for coyotes and let the owner know that the traps are easily accessible to curious dogs. If they care for those dogs they won't be running around unleashed any more.

    that would be step 1.

I agree, make it sound like you're concerned about the safety of the dogs when speaking to the owner.

  11. I started a shot one thread, only difference was I saw my buck bite it 40 yards away. The other members have a right to post as they wish, whether the recovery was made or not it's something the hunter has to live with. May it be a reminder to all this happens. Maybe other will see the need to put as much effort as they can into that shot.

I wasn't being serious......but, it does seem like bad luck to have your deer dead and hanging before you actually have your hands on it..........

  12. any thread that starts out with "Deer down", "Hit a good one", "Big Buck down", or any of the other classics, that isn't accompanied with a photo or a confirmed recovery, should be immediately deleted..................

  13. I understand your frustration, but they are volunteers who cover a large area and have lives outside of looking for someone else's deer 24x7.   Keep looking, keep positive and I hope you find him.  I have been through the exact same thing 3 years ago.

I was a member of Deer Search for a few years, the main reason I gave it up was because of some of the crap I got from people when I couldn't or wouldn't come out............

  14. neighboring houses is an important consideration to any land purchase, we have five acres that is a well used travel route that would produce deer every year.........when we first bought, the neighbors on each side were great and allowed us to shoot even if we were within the 500' buffer zone, and our property is such that no matter were we hunted we were within 500' feet of their houses.........fast forward a few years, and one of them sold out to a not so nice person, now we can't even hunt our property because of him.......so, make sure whatever you buy you have enough distance that you don't have to worry about that.

  15. he would have needed to have taken the course to be able to hunt with a bow during the regular season.......

Question: Is it legal to use a bow or muzzleloader during the regular northern zone "rifle" season or southern zone "shotgun" season?
    Answer:
You may use a bow or muzzleloader during the regular big game season. However, if using a bow, you must have completed the bowhunter training course and carry with you during the hunt either a valid bow stamp or the bowhunter training course certificate.

  16. Great....I have not found anywhere in the book about it nor can I understand how/why they would be illegal....

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

most of the information out there points to them being illegal in NY, due to the fact that the blades don't fold forward when you try to remove them from an animal, thus creating a "barb".........

  17. I realize you are funning here, but it is a good idea to consider scent when you pack your lunch. Scent free clothing, body, etc. goes out the window after a lunch of salami and pepper jack cheese sandwich...washed down with a couple of cups of hot chocolate. Think not only of eliminating scent, but also of not creating new scent.

most guys never thought of that...thanks.

  18. Harassment???  LOL about 10 years ago before I moved upstate full time I got stopped  driving to Jersey at 8pm on Rt 28 in Shandaken.  I was dressed in regular clothes.  The DEC guy asked how we did. I said “no luck.”

Then he asked me for my hunting license.  I told him that my license is at the farmhouse on my hunting clothes. As I only hunt on my property I have no need to have my license on me now.  He told me the law says I am supposed to show it when asked.  I said I do but I am driving on RT 28 not hunting.  If I was hunting I need to have my license on me but I am not hunting.  I am just driving on a public road following all the laws. NY has no laws requiring a hunting license to transport rifles and mine are cased, locked and in the trunk. He said I need to carry it on me at “ALL TIMES”.  I said “So when your home in bed where do you carry yours?  How do you keep it dry in the shower?”  He said “that’s stupid show me your license”.  Again I told him I am not hunting but driving and since I am driving, I would be glad to show you my driver’s license.  You have no reason to suspect me of any wildlife infraction and I am answering all your questions.

We did this dance for about 5 minutes.  I asked him if he was married.  He said yes.  I asked to see his marriage license. I said you’re married all the time and by that logic you need to carry that license on your person.  Again, he insisted he needed to see my hunting license.  Finally I told him “Ok officer I’ll pull over and jump in your car. YOU can DRIVE me the 150 mile round trip to the farm. I am not wasting money on gas for something this stupid.  Tell your supervisor you’ll be back in about 3 hours.” That stopped him in his tracks and after a few seconds he said, “Well you need to show an officer your license when asked.”

“When you see me hunting you can and I will be glad to show you. Have a good evening.” and drove away.

They have a job to stop wildlife infractions…..however allowing them to go beyond a certain line is just stupid.

As Sam Adams said,” Those who would give up Essential Liberty ... deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.”

good story, but now I need a nap..........

  19. I use mostly fresh but the wife insists on buying ground, the problem I have with the ground is it gets hard in the containers is there any way of stoppin this.I know using rice helps in salt shakers but wondering if it would help keeping moisture out of powdered garlic.

yes, tell her to stop buying the ground stuff.

  20. But back to the original topic, down here on L.I., deer checks seem to be just that, deer checks.......I have never had a ECO ask to see my gun or bow, ask to search my vehicle or look for anything to screw with me about, most of the interaction is with Biologists.
