Its more like "Varmint Shooting" then hunting...If we call it that, maybe everyone will feel better about it. : They shoot prairie dogs out west by the hundreds at a time. No problem with Varmint Shooting at all. You can watch videos of Prairie Dogs exploding all day on the internet.

Yeah, I remember shooting a pistol on the 100 yard range there. (I dont get to do that a lot)I dont know if you are technicaly alowed to, but there was no one really there that day and they let me. That was pretty cool.

I never thought of the snow part..Of course that makes sense. But I do not have many rabbits in the area. Maybe I will get one of those 2 ' wire fences and put it around the bottom...Thanks

Planted some apple trees in the back 1/2 acre field.. I know very little about growing trees, except what I have learned off the net recently. Hope I did everything right. I bought two of the trees online, a Braeburn, and a Transcendent Crabapple. The rest are from Home Depot.

Yeah I competely understand that. But I cant tell you how many times I wanted to look something up...Like looking at google maps, or looking up a certain kind of tree, to doing a repair I know nothing about. Ah, what the heck did I do before the internet...Thats what I want to know.. :

Does anyone have wildblue internet at their home or camp? I would like to get internet at the camp other than dial-up. There are some bad reviews out there, I was wondering if anyone has it?

And that right there is the problem...YOU didn't see it as an ethical problem, even though it clearly is. It's all about how you justify it. I also find it interesting how you post your own property to keep others out, but have no qualms about entering another parcel, just because that landowner did not...you are truly a unique individual, and do your fellow sportsmen proud. You will hold your nose in the air and proclaim to all that will listen that you can go where you want, but you still can't just do the right thing and ask permission first. We will eat our own young. When your favorite pastime is gone, make sure you clap yourself on the back for your intense efforts to speed it along... In fact I have not hunted private land on LI for quite a few years. 20-25 years ago there used to be private land that everyone hunted, it was not posted. I wanted to make sure I was following the rules and asked a police officer. He told me the law and said it was no problem. I hunted it for quail a few years, until it was built upon. I am setting an example for no one. I am not hurting hunting in any way. That is actually funny. I followed the rules my whole life, even as a kid, as I wanted to be in the Law Enforcement field. I never violated a game law. Ever. Thats about the size of it. Why would you want to turn this discussion to something personal about me? You do not know me. You were attacking the original poster in the guise of "ethics," without taking into consideration local customs, and the law.

Why can't you just do the right, honest, moral, ethical, and most of all, RESPECTFUL thing, and ask permission before entering property that is obviously not your own? No. Trespassing is illegal even on unposted property, unless it is unimproved, apparently unused and unfenced (or not otherwise enclosed to exclude intruders.) Even on vacant land, a written notice delivered in person (or by certified mail with a signed receipt, etc.) to any person, in the name of the landowner or authorized party, containing a description of the premises and a warning of restrictions which apply has the same effect, for that person, as if the land were posted with those restrictions. Likewise, anyone asked to leave the premises, posted or not, by the landowner, occupant or other authorized person, must do so immediately.

Nope, that would not be legal. Also, you have to take into consideration local customs. There are a lot of parcels on LI that were bought by speculators, or corporations to build housing, that for some reason or other failed. They are holding the land, and could care less who hunts on it. By not posting the property, the owner is actually inviting hunting on that parcel.

It is perfectly legal to hunt property that is not posted in New York State. As long as it is unimproved and unfenced. That is simply the law. Knowing that, any landowners not wanting hunters on thier land, should post it. As I do. If I did not post my property, I would expect someone to be hunting there. Give the guy a break. He is following the law.

I was correct in my hunch that it wouldn't take long for someone here to make this point. Many times things are like clockwork on hunting forums. We can set our clocks to what will be said, and when. LOL I always have said that if there was an open season on hunters, the vast majority would get shot at first light on opening morning. They surely are not very difficult to pattern. LOL So, you are saying I should not have made that point? Why not?

Actually "seperation of church and state," is not explicit in the constitution.

The law states that if is not posted and unimproved,(and no fence) it is legal to hunt there. Pretty simple really. I have a buddy that hunts all the nooks and crannies on LI. He has had run ins with anti-hunters, never property owners though. The antis have called the police on him a few times. Even though they were the ones breaking the law. The officers in the area seem to understand the law pretty well. They have basically sided with him. If someone owns a property that they do not want hunted, they can post it like I do. That is not to say a landowner can not tell you to leave. If they do, and you don't, that is trespassing, and you can be arrested.

I think if you raked apples in to a pile, you might get a ticket for baiting...Lets put it this way, the DEC officer would probably write you a ticket, and let the court decide. If you were shaking your own apple trees on your own land, as part of an "agricultural proceedure" that would be another story. I believe it would be quite hard to get a ticket for that anyway. It just really is not gonna happen.

I have the Delorme PN-20. I think now they are up to the PN-40. (or 60?) It is a very cool GPS. Although I would not say it is easy to use. The software side anyway..But you can download topos and color areial maps to the unit. The software has many features. Took me a while to get the hang of the software, but it is really cool.
