  1. Typically in the 'real world', you don't get something or treated in some way until you first demonstrate that you've earned and deserve it. That's one of the main lessons that has to be learned in the maturing process. With the exception of our government, most people don't just give things, they have to be earned. ps: not directed to you steve, simply a slightly different view on that statement
  2. Hi and welcome. There is a lot of good information already here and plenty of folks willing to answer questions. Where are you from? I'd also recommend filling out your profile, including location data so that when you ask questions, people will know what area of the state you're in.
  3. Just practice. Either the gun doesn't fit you or you need to work on your form, or both... but I'll hush as we got off on a tangent
  4. not true. My 500 12ga Mossberg has a Knoxx adjustable stock (recoil reducing), a pistol grip, and a muzzlebreak on it and it's totally legal. It's a pump vs semi. I really don't see the big deal about semis anyhow, anyone should easily be able to handle a pump. With the Knoxx stock on it a youngster could shoot slugs from mine in a teeshirt, no problem.
  5. I don't see how we can discuss, debate, analyze the rules when we haven't been clearly told what the rules are. I'm not sure even the "representatives" know! Just to clarify, earlier someone said that ARs are the only thing that has to be registered. Not true. ANY weapon which is classified as an assault weapon by the SAFE act AND those which were classified as assault weapons prior to the SAFE act must be registered. That includes a lot of semis.
  6. ah ok - gotcha - I understood that but apparently misread somewhere and thought someone indicated that in the future you may not be able to buy unless you showed proof of registration. Sorry about that and thanks.
  7. ok, so hypothetically of course, IF I had long guns that I was given by my Dad or that I bought 40 years ago and aren't registered then I wouldn't be able to buy ammo for them unless I registered them? (of course this is a theoretical question only but I'm sure glad we're moving out of NY in a few years)
  8. Again, if you could find it. I can't remember the last time I saw bricks of .22LR's that you didn't need to take out a mortgage for, IF you could even find them.
  9. been watching it, interesting viewing. Kicks the crud out of most things on the tube. No mention of piebalds yet, wonder if they will
  10. http://www.timesunion.com/local/article/NY-SAFE-Act-ammo-sales-deadline-is-a-dud-5143693.php Wednesday marks the first anniversary of New York's SAFE Act, a controversial gun law passed by lawmakers and signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo a year ago in the wake of the Newtown, Conn., school massacre. The day will come and go without a key component of the law going into effect. Wednesday was originally supposed to trigger a requirement that buyers of ammunition go through background checks before purchasing bullets or shells. Gun dealers are then supposed to keep records on the sales. But the deadline has turned out to be a moving target and is delayed until further notice. The vague timetable for requiring background checks was first reported by the Times Union in October and it was made official around the start of January through a letter to the public from State Police Superintendent Joseph D'Amico posted on a website outlining the new law. "The state database is currently under construction and not operational, and prior notice will be given to all sellers on a timely basis before the database is completed and any requirements are relevant," reads the recently added statement on the SAFE Act site (http://www.governor.ny.gov/nysafeact/gun-reform). News of the delay came as no surprise to gun dealers who late last year suspected that was the case when they noticed they hadn't received any details about the background check mandate from the State Police, who are charged with enforcing the new law. That hadn't changed as of Tuesday. "We've received nothing in print from the state yet," said Dave Beecroft, who operates Beecroft's Shooters Supply in Schaghticoke. There are, however, other changes effective Wednesday, including a new requirement that ammunition purchases over the Internet go through a licensed gun dealer rather than directly from the vendor. Additionally, those who own magazines that can hold more than 10 rounds as of Wednesday are supposed to get rid of them or modify them so the limit is 10. It wasn't clear how many of those large-capacity magazines are out there, but some shooting enthusiasts predict that few gun owners will immediately comply. "I suspect there are going to be an awful lot of people who simply ignore it," said Stephen Aldstadt, a gun rights activist with SCOPE, or Shooters Committee on Political Education
  11. Hopefully everyone here understands the importance of being registered and actually getting out and voting. If not then they are either just extremely complacent or lazy or both. Either way, I don't think if they don't vote now that they will no matter what's said here. Supporting the NRA, SCOPE (did you make your calls yesterday and today? ) and such organizations are also worthwhile ways to help. But, how do we reach the droves of gun owners who apparently aren't registered and don't seem to be paying attention and inform them that it's critical that they register and vote if they want to continue to own guns and be able to use them in New York? Few, if any media outlets are going to help or carry any stories on it. I suspect all of the hunt clubs are, and have been actively promoting the vote and what it means this time around. How do we reach out to the complacent couch potatoes to understand and get off their butts and vote?
  12. Couldn't agree more. Typically, potential jurors are selected randomly from registered voters, drivers license info, and possibly from unemployment records. It can vary. I've served on three juries over the years and actually found the experience quite enlightening, especially the Federal drug case I sat on in White Plains. Things look a bit different from the other side of that railing, lemme tell ya. unemployment benefits unemployment benefits
  13. One thing that continually amazes me is how many people don't realize that "semi-automatic" is a very prevalent term in the definitions. Most everyone who sees my 500 Mossberg insists that it's an assault weapon because of the pistol grip and adjustable stock...
  14. I fear you may be right Doc. We REALLY have to do all we can to get people to write to their "representatives" and voice their opinions on these things AND get out to vote this time.
  15. I could be mistaken as I'm not going to go back and re-read the entire thread. Yes, I believe a few replies may have included the words "thanks" etc, but I think more often than not, the sentiment was to simply WRITE to the NY Senate and Assembly members ans ask for their support and at the same time prompted folks to vote out, or try to, the supporters of the SAFE act. While "thanks" was mentioned I don't think it was the prevalent theme. I doubt if you can find many, if any sportsmen and women who support the SAFE act and I would be equally surprised if there are any who will vote to keep it's supporters in office. What does surprise me is the sentiment that we should not push to get something done just because we don't like their SAFE act position and intent to vote against them in the future.
  16. HEY, I resemble that! ;-) Having dealt with MVS, VM, DOS, WinBLOWS, SunOS, HP-UXx, Linux, AIX, Unix, etc, etc ,etc operating systems, I don't suppose I fall into the "non geek" category huh?
  17. uh... lets see... Benghazi = silence IRS abuses of power = silence Domestic spying = silence National parks got shut down over the budget with a "Make it as painful as possible" coming straight from the president. = silence Bridgegate = impeach him Yeah, I think he may be serious
  18. http://www.amazon.com/HotLogic-400-Ultimate-Slow-Cooker/dp/B005KALPYU I used it once to test it. It functions extremely well for it's purpose. You can take items directly from the freezer or refrigerator and put them into this unit and in an hour or an hour and a half the food is ready to eat. It says it will hold the food at temperature for 12 hours without burning or adversely affecting the flavor. I tried it, it will! You can use any number of the four available trays and it functions exactly the same as only using one. The only "rule" is that it must be sealed. I put a frozen vacuum sealed bag of soup in it and it worked great. Usage of the product can't get much simpler: 1) turn it on 2) wait until the shelf indicators turn blue 3) Place the COLD food item on a tray and the indicator will change from blue to red 4) When the shelf indicator turns red, it's done (can is there for size perspective) As simple as that and it WORKS. No smells, no rush to eat immediately, no adverse affect on the food no matter how long it's in the "ready" state. My only criticism is that for home use, it just doesn't seem to be very applicable for most, unless you have a houseful of teens on various schedules. It'd be great for that. Ideally it seems like for a hunting camp or business environment, it'd be perfect. People could put their lunch in the Macrowave when they leave for hunting or arrive at work and whenever during the day that they get back or have time to eat, their food will be hot and ready, perfect to eat and without smelling up the entire area until opened. Would prefer to avoid shipping but will ship if necessary but the buyer pays shipping. Ready to use (blue shelf lights): http://i1317.photobucket.com/albums/t621/03bluecoupe/Macrowave/Readytouse_zps85f44f95.jpg Done (red shelf lights): http://i1317.photobucket.com/albums/t621/03bluecoupe/Macrowave/Done_zps443d97a4.jpg The Sprint can is just there for a size reference.
