  1. Oh ya We have a sparkling red wine that Mr.B likes. So we will have some of that...I like the The Olive Garden house white wine I buy...
  2. Are they timber quality? If you have 20 acres of brush and golden rod...why cut down possible $$ trees? Also soil test, soil test, soil test...lt takes up to 6 mos for lime to fully work and it is a must to incorporate into the soil....particle to particle..... soil to lime contact...
  3. I made a huge pot of Minestrone Soup today ..what doesn't it have in it..fresh herbs, yellow and zucchini summer squash, butternut squash, carrots ,our canned tomatoes diced red potatoes, chopped collard greens ,cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, roasted red peppers and sauteed onion ,garlic and yellow peppers, pasta, cannellini beans, lentils with a nice crusty bread and fresh shaved Parmesan cheese
  4. Me Too...... thanks...I'm happier I wasn't driving the Gator under it at the time...I have had too many close calls...hearing the snap and just making it to a nearby tree next to me. Then have my side scraped up as the branches slid down the tree I was pinned up against...I learned never to take the time to look at such a sound...just get a big tree between you and the direction it came from the second you here the first crack. looking back or up could be a life and death decision.. once they start it happens so dang FAST! Unfortunately we have something killing the maples in the area...I believe it to be bugs but we also have a canker and a soil born fungus...leaving us with standing dead mature trees. it's the bugs causing the tops to blow out ...while still in leaf.
  5. DEC forester pointed to mine and said..."Want turkey?, keep those"...He was right, but I knew that from camp half our stands are in hophorn ...The thing I didn't know was how much deer love them...It's comical watching. They walk around on their hind legs trying to eat every drupe they can reach. ever see a deer hop on it's hind legs...I have....hhhmm..... I wonder if that's how they got their name? That's the size I've cut with my trusty little Stihl...and let me tell you I'm very careful they are one darn heavy tree when alive...I am not allowed to cut with the chain saw while alone...so Mr B got me a long pruning Stihl pole saw...I learned quick how to get the most out of it years ago...I have too much to do to be waiting around...the pole keeps the chain at a safe distance from me and helps me stay a safe distance from the trees's I cut...I saw what a chain saw did to a guys under arm...from his arm pit to wrist.....How he managed that I do not know ,but as his sister told me while showing the NASTY ER pics...he's lucky he's fat...it didn't hit the artery and he was 2 miles from the nearest help. No thank you...I have 5 chains and they are in a constant rotation making sure I always have a sharp blade on...
  6. Poplar snap!...I can cut rather large ones with my pruning saw...they are easy to cut through and I cut at an angle in the direction I know is the best fall ,according to the trunk angle and limb growth then let gravity snap them off...the great thing about a long pole pruner. Hophorn are a great feed tree to have ...Hell on saw blades but unwanted ones make great fire wood. Glad your getting a lot done it's a good feeling, I know...I have so much to clean up, the woods looks like a bomb went off. Trees snapped off branches everywhere...the neighbor's wood lot is looking the same..I see he lost some big maples as well.. The wind just howled last night and it's pretty brisk today dang cold too...
  7. idea.......I was just about ready to really think hard about getting my climbers out again...when today I took my walk and did some woods work. I walked a path I do everyday and drive the Gator on and find it impassable...a 100ft 18" diameter maple had the top blow off at around 70 ft...This is a tree that didn't look at all dead and was loaded with leafs and branches all last year, great timber tree for it was straight and clean all the way to the break...I say blew off because that 30 fT of trunk and limbs had the snapped end land no less than 15ft from the trunk...I had actually considered climbing or putting a ladder stand against it last year.... At this point I think I would only trust our oaks. I keep envisioning being safety strapped well above my head in a climber...just to have the section I'm tethered too snap off tearing me out of the climber probably in half....
  8. I remember it well...The "gang" not being able to drive would take after dark walks around the neighbor hood(which a country neighbor hood are the back roads) though we did have 4 streets...and we listened to the trees popping...some actually sounded like they were exploding it was so loud...also being of age to drink...we spent some time just chilling in the local bars..didn't have a store with in 4 miles but back then we had at least 3 bars in the area...lol After that we all carried candles, snacks, water, matches and blankets in our cars...I drove back and forth to Alfred to Perkensville every day..always carried at least two changes of clothes as well as a heavy parka and pack boots..
  9. or go searching for what new address it landed in...
  10. Actually it could be a White Holland ,which are rare and very expensive. They were the "normal" sized bird(up to 25#'s) that was breed to wide breasted Bronze in order to produce those white broad breasted turkey. If she is, they may find spring poults...but I'm surprised someone isn't looking for her. If they are a turkey hobbyist it would be a show bird or breeder. There is at least one registered breeder here in NYS German town and one in Massachusetts, Sterling. Then again it could be any one of these White Heritage breeds listed in the link. He did say it escaped a hobby farm... http://www.motherearthnews.com/homesteading-and-livestock/heritage-turkey-breeds
  11. I started out many years ago planting buckwheat and over planting rape seed in with it in the spring...I had great success with the deer using both. This considering it was something completely foreign to them. That said I also found out just how hard it is to kill rape...mine not only reseeded but regrew in the spring from the original plants! I hit it with round up , mowed it down ...it was like a dandelion. So I shied away from it after...this, I will not worry about for these plantings. but mowing will control it.
  12. Not sure what you meant to quote, it's blank. I assume the Winter rye post, BTW I didn't mean to put in bold like that and then it wouldn't undo. Oates will grow fine and head out...the WR or a WR which if I recall is also in the blend "small grains" won't ...but that's not a bad thing for it will still act as a nurse crop for clovers and great bugging for turkey..I won't grow as tall but will still be good cover for poults and feed. The deer will bed in it. Either way spring or fall it's 44 cents a #! even if the turkey's came in and ate it all...I'm still ahead of the game with fatter turkeys that will want to hang around...there is no down side to this
  13. Damn! There goes my tongue ...bit it clear off...alas...I'm getting better at this, though my tongues taking a beating....
  14. So true on that...which is why I plant so many small areas...We are farm country..so it's corn and WW,oats, Alfalfa and clovers. Unfortunately and yes I wonder if it isn't partly my fault but soy beans. We have 3 major crop farmers in the areas one raising beef as well...but several years ago I asked the biggest and closest to me about soybeans. I had already had success with them but was looking for weed remedies. He not knowing I was planting them said Soybeans ,It is just too rocky and unsuitable soil for soybeans here. I said really? Mine do great. 40 inches tall and full of beans...the next season he put in a few acres of "test seed". He does this near his storage/mechanics ,office area...Now soybeans are everywhere!..Could and with out a doubt be market driven ...but I do wonder if I put the bug in his ear...lol Anyways that was one of the "off " crops I plant...I'm still about the only one around with brassicas, there are some farm buckwheat on occasion, the only Hemp and now iron clay peas, burnett , chicory, trefoil. I tried sainfoil but it didn't grow at all and on well fertilized good soil. Deer just won't allow the sun flowers...and I'm not fencing, The sweet grasses are a hit as well. I'm always on the look out for different things...I did have Knaff and the deer kept it from growing, so it was a hit but in the sun flower category. Vetches may be in the future and corn will get a break ...until the farmers do their rotation into complete clover Alfalfa again for a year or two.
  15. With the warm temps it could also be skunk and crow grubbing ...but yes the turkey here have been pretty active as well. WR won't usually head out if planted in the spring..mine hasn't but you can do spring tillage..which is a oat pea or a spring tritical pea combos, spring wheat. Hit the Welter site and they have good explanations on these. You can pick them up locally at ag places. They will be putting orders in soon so ask now to find this years pricing and see about adding to the order if you want..
  16. I had what the farmer behind me said when deciding to plant the Plot Spike this spring. He has his field in strips All started in corn as a weed killer. One year in corn and then he would leave a strip to plant a spring oats and clover mix or a mixed hay. Then the following year he would leave another strip next to the first. Now last year was the last strip left and he had his spring oats and clover in there,no more corn. He told me that the deer just hammered his oats. I have planted Tritical in the spring and the deer really hit it, with the clovers and peas you should have good success I may toss in a bit more clover and perhaps some chicory...The rape will get hit early but if not mowed will get "woody" and blossom...Oh boy rape readily reseeds.I like my turkeys, so deer are not the only consideration when planting...the turkey will love it...unfortunately sometimes way too much and I loose a lot of seed...thus the addition of more clover and chicory...They also love oats when they seed out.
  17. I do not have any mounts and to be honest my tries at turkey fans and beards go by the way side unless I'm using them on a decoy...That said, I found this while cruising.I want to make a turkey skin to lay over one of my decoys so looked up tanning turkey hides...found this interesting. http://www.hidetanning.net/WildTurkeyTaxidermyTips.html http://www.qualitytaxidermysupply.com/StopRotTaxidermyTanning.html
  18. Going through the pics...thought I'd drop in a few more I have taken..3 mos and a few days for many of us...earlier for some of you lucky ones....
  19. Yes. Every thing arrives fully smoked/grilled and on ice. Comes with sauce and dry rub just heat and serve
  20. I have the same problem...to vet it delivered you have to have 10 tons delivered at once..then you have to keep it dry to spread. Also spreading it is a bit difficult without the proper equipement.. So you can stop in and ask your local farmer and see who delivers theirs. Ask if they know anyone you could hire to spread or who to rent a spreader from.
  21. A rack of Rendezvous ribs from our hunting friends gift, mashed potatoes, baked beans, tossed salad.
  22. So cleaning up drive...don't think so...just a wild guess...but felt like. 40#'s a square foot....it can just stay where it is...thank you very much!...
