Anyone Tried Winter Peas?
growalot replied to Cabin Fever's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Never planted them but another ?...would they grow fast enough to compete with a light sowing of turnips?....being deer really like turnips mostly after a hard frost...they may not notice them as much....giving them a chance to grow longer before getting hit -
I think it's funny...It's good enough to "Pose" as treestand hunter for his web site....but not good enough to be considered "real" hunting in life... go figure...lol
-
Please don't let that be true....it is the only slug our family will use....this year in hunting news just keeps getting worse
-
I believe that unless your in an area that you were lucky enough to draw a doe tag....but I know many ppl that have not gotten doe tags for their areas...say 8M...8X...those are very iffy spots...and there hunt would be over....As many ppl have said this will cause a hunter loss in NYS dumb move ...not thought through... I always believed the bow hunters should get an automatic doe tag each year...if they are worried so much about the herd being too high ...why not?....of all hunters... from what I've read in many posts over the years...we do, perhaps, the most traveling across the state

Sportsmen Strongly Support Yearling Buck Protection in NYSDEC Deer Plan

also..maybe it's just our area....but I'm not seeing a 3 points one side being a deterrent to shooting 1 1/2 yr.olds...I've seen many many 5....6 and even small 8's that were 1 1/2 yr olds...That is just genetics and not all areas in this state have the same genetics....not all areas have the same mineral composition in the soil...to improve antler growth...who's kidding who here on it being for herd health....maybe in a vacuum....but the NY deer herd does not exist in a vacuum -

See...now that statement makes no sense to me... ppl say we don't have a balanced herd....way too many 11/2 year old bucks are being shot... If that is true..... than it would figure that more older bucks that have laid low during the hunting season due to being wise...... would be in a higher percentage of herd breeding...does it not?...I'm mean dead deer don't breed right?....so the deer that AR propontants say need to be doing the breeding ... actually already are.... occording to the all the young bucks are being shot fear.... -
By the way....On one other sight I'm on ...and these are very friendly non confrontational ppl....from many states north south and west...and they put a post up about NYS deer proposals...non of us NY'ers had mentioned it.....The concensus (SP)... That we had better start fighting this.... for to them...it sounds like our hunting was in the process of getting back doored...they had read an article in the NYpost

CHC...now that is a good idea...but still at that the change for the bow only areas should be 100yrds and remain the same as gun every where else....what happened to asking..thought all you guys where big on that...if the bow only areas have ppl sick of loosing thousands to deer damage it should be easy to get permission with all the huggable personalities out there

I don't think they are needed....If they enact them well not a problem for me right now...but I'd hate to see...my Dad in-law get up there in years...74 now and not be able to take a buck before his hunting "career"(lack of a better term coming to mind) comes to an end... yes he was raised brown is down and it drives me a bit crazy ...but he was the one that put the time in....taught safety classes years ago..... got the family into hunting...sat on stand with the grand kids...made sure there would be a family camp for the future...he already earned what ever buck he wants...he's the reason we all hold off on smaller buck...because brown is down included a lot of doe and the work that goes into cleaning and preserving ..a lot of doe...if we take a buck...we want that work have a tad more meat and sweeter pics to go with it...I think many more hunters than not feel this way now I believe there are enough ppl out there teaching young hunters to wait...Now in all honesty though...if the DEC screws up again and doe aren't out there like they have been in recent years...meat is meat and I would like the option to choose if push comes to shove -
I've never seen a deer with such prominent ribs showing this time of year...especially with the amount of food around...what do you think? Also look at the times on last two pics...what do you think that blur is?May have a deer to call the flash?...lol .....or an active owl?

Lower the legal shooting distance for bow????
growalot replied to ELMER J. FUDD's topic in Bow Hunting
To one post...never here of problems...Because the DEC has a policy...at least in reg 8...that unless you are wounded or dead...or property damage occurs ...shooting incidents are never written up...even when requested as to not making it illegal to knowingly shoot in the direction of a building...I was calling the DEC as the yahoos in the open field next door was swinging and wildly shooting at deer running between our home and them...DEC said are they 500ft away?..barely....well they are legal!...Yet a guy was shot and hit...two years later by a slug that traveled 1/4 mile..DEC office told me as we were going to were my neighbor was nearly shot out of her 16ft stand.... Did you realize as the law is written...it is legal to shoot deer on another persons property?...what ever weapon used...just not legal to recover with out permission...They can't even write the laws to make common sense : They change the 500ft ruling for bow and the DEC will be busy making arrests....on the places I don't have high fencing on...for I will NO LONGER ALLOW recovery for any animals....if that's what it takes to get the message across...It's taken me years of hard work to get the local wild dog problem ...the trespassing problem and the shooting too close to my live stock and home problem under control for not only my self but a few others in the area that have thanked me.....by the way all of them being hunting land owners...Now the DEC idiots want to muck it all up.....Thats right name calling if you will...description of IMOP By the way now that I'm all fired up...where exactly is this proposal written down in the DEC 5 yr plan?...or is it just wishful thinking...I don't seem to be able to find it -
Nope doesn't bother me at all...just the pic didn't match your words...not that I thought for a moment you wouldn't have a plausable answer to a simple question
-
NYA....a question...just curious....is that you in your avitar?....If so..... are you strapped to that tree quietly laying wait over a trail?.....that might lead to... as most trails do ..say a food source..bedding area or such...Or are you up there "Hunting" away while doing an Irish Jigg or something.... ;D

Hunter...that green one up in the woods I built last spring....I made out of a packing crate ...card board and plastic tarps....and shes still bone dry and comfy...but like you I need to stretch a bit and the office chair in it gives my just enough room to swing around with out hitting the walls...so I know what you mean -

growalot replied to growalot's topic in General Chit Chat
no ...with the way I put in the final bracing there is no need...they are solid as a rock and absolutely no movement...I'm actually afraid of heights so I'm very careful on how I build things...by village law they also can't be permenantly(sp) attached to the ground.....the chicken coop I built a few years back...On a block and stone foundation with no morter...has never moved an inch...with all our winds and heaving frost -

all told 30+ at home and camp....this will look similar to the one in pic but bigger...the next two I build will be 6x6 and 12 ft high ...no deck...some ppl build bird houses....others buy "collectables"...me I just like planting and building things....in the pic I built this red chicken coop down in the woods...Mr B likes to have a rooster with the hens...I don't care for crowing at 3 a.m.( his last rooster : ) so this was my solution.....I'm building a bigger out door run ...actually working on it today...but the little unwired section...acts as a blind and supply area....deer really don't mind the rooster crowing and I'm amazed how the chicken sounds attract turkey and I get lots of eggs to boot ;D -
Sorry...I'm sure I was one of those ppl :-[ ....But like I've always said all deer don't act the same in all areas ...no matter what the "experts" tell you but I am a tad surprised...you have basically the same type of food souces we do here...you have some picky eaters....hope you found something they like
-
cuts through you like a knife...these older bones will be able to sit comfy and take in the view ...Really I just can't handle the driving rains and the blowing snow like I use to....but I know there are turkeys...deer... yotes and what not out in it so I will be too...just warm and dry thank You...lol I forgot how heavy PT wood is and dang if all muscles don't scream today....manged it by building in sections and attaching braces so I could lift the sections and they'd stand on their own as I positiond them...pheww hard work done....will finish decking in a few days then build the shooting house...over all10x6x8ft high.....The shooting house will be 6x6x6' 2"high with a 6x4 open deck for nice calm days...

Lower the legal shooting distance for bow????
growalot replied to ELMER J. FUDD's topic in Bow Hunting
That's nice that you know shooting toward any structure even 500ft isn't enough...and that you have common sence.....But let's be TOTALLY honest here for once....that does not apply to at least half the hunters out there at one point or another Then you have the recovery issues for we both know deer can run over a 100yrds be fore expiring or 3yrds...with 60yrds being a fair average. It's nothing but a problem that doesn't need to be enacted....I have called my neighbors and asked how far they are from my line...NOT to ask permission for I don't want ppl hunting that close to me...but to find how far from my line I need to be to hunt legally ...safely and to make them feel safe as well.....I see that as building bridges... -
Lower the legal shooting distance for bow????
growalot replied to ELMER J. FUDD's topic in Bow Hunting
Hhhmmm It wouldn't let me paste the next regulation in last post...so another try..... It is illegal to discharge a firearm or bow: so that the load or arrow passes over any part of a public highway, within 500 feet of any school, playground, or an occupied factory or church, within 500 feet of a dwelling, farm building or structure in occupation or use unless you own it, lease it, are an immediate member of the family, an employee, or have the owner's consent. You may hunt waterfowl, over water, within 500 feet of a dwelling or public structure as long as neither are within 500 feet in the direction you are shooting. -
