  1. same here. 3 of 4 have gone missing, but worst of all #1 was hit by a car. I'd much rather the neighbor get them then a VW
  2. the middle one gives me a fuss before we go. The oldest and youngest are always gung ho. But once they're there they all have a great time. Start em young and they'll be in love forever.
  3. I stopped watching that show after like season 3 or 4, but i'd sure as shit tune into that episode.
  4. this is historically a quiet few weeks. Lots of folks took time off last week, plus opening weekend. A solid 8 days of ground pounding and many need to get back to work. This next weekend is usually quiet too, and then it picks up as less hunters in the woods and the deer recover from the orange pumpkin 870 invasion.
  5. to each his own, as long as someone eats them... but damn man that's my favorite cut. It's tradition in my family to eat them fresh the night of or after. Never froze one in my life.
  6. same here, nothing but hornady in my slug gun or rifle. My .30-06 I use superformance rounds and have no complaints other than price haha.
  7. if someone wanted to be sure their firing pin wasn't lubed after cleaning what should you do to be certain? Would a wipe with hoppes9 solvent or something else a good idea?
  8. I haven't reread this whole thread, but I didn't get that vibe at all. One beer does not take any grown man above the legal limit. Several beer, ie "drinking in the stand" most likely does. I also don't think anyone said it was deadly, just maybe not a good idea. In either scenario, after you've had a few drinks (lets say IPA's because nobodies getting drunk off coors lite), you're putting yourself and others at risk whether you're driving or hunting, or shit doing just about anything as you're not clinically impaired. Don't make it something it's not.
  9. I guess I read this question as "drinking" meaning, someone who would enjoy a few in the stand. I also don't really see a need to drink in the stand. I don't hunt out of blinds so limiting movement and noise is a goal haha. I see a beer after dragging out a deer and then driving home a few miles as not any different than having a drink or 2 with the wife out to dinner. I'm not saying it's a great idea, just my take on it.
  10. yeah but it's a very popular shot none the less. I will say that with archery I've had deer go 100 yards and not bleed and it took hours and hours of grid searching to find. I guess the devils advocate is that not all deer bleed like they should and a blood trail is still some risk, especially in a swamp, thick brush, corn fields etc.
  11. Yeah I think this is a common thought today, just wondering if there's something I'm missing. I do understand that a dead deer and most meat is better than a lost deer and no meat. But again if you're shooting a doe, you're not killing for any other reason than meat. My dad once had to shoot down at a doe and we lost half the backstraps. In hindsight, we both agreed it just didn't make sense if meat was our only goal.
  12. I appreciate that feedback. I haven't ruled it out. Speed is not a priority at all for me.
  13. Maybe this is or isn't the right place for this, but I blew up some shoulders Saturday. On one hand I was happy as this deer took zero steps and died almost instantly. On the other hand I got very little meat for the grind pile out of these shoulders. I know some rifle hunters purposefully take this shot, but it struck me when processing yesterday that if you're shooting a deer for meat... what a silly shot to take. I get it if it's the only shot, or if it's a buck (to some degree). Otherwise I don't think I'll ever intentionally take that shot again. Am I wrong?
  14. with these temps the meat is fine. I will always rinse down a gut shot or gut spilled deer. I will always rinse tenderloins regardless, but I also eat them in a day or so and never freeze them. If there is anything here to worry about it's the tenderloins. Everything else is fine so long as it smells and looks ok. you WILL know when it's not. For extra precaution, freeze everything and don't eat any of it for a few weeks if you're really, really worried. Very little to no bacteria is going to survive that and then of course cook everything like you normally wood. At this point you're in the clear for food safety and entering in the "taste" part of it. Again, you'll know.
  15. is my forum screwed up. I see congrats to nomad and no posts by him?
  16. I shot a nice buck in Mississippi. It was right at legal light and he ran down a 6' wide and 10' deep crevasse and up the other side. I was already at the bottom of a steep ravine. Luckily the deer are smaller down south, but he wasn't small. I ended up having to toss him down into the crevasse and with him on my shoulders I squatted him up the other side. Then came the ravine. Every few feet I'd get him up he'd just slide back down. So I had to make these "pushes" to a tree where I could temporarily hold him. On top of it all it started to drizzle and there are all sorts of weird critters and noises in the woods in the south that this yankee wasn't used to. To tell you I was on the verge of tears is not an exaggeration and several times I considered leaving him there and coming back in the morning, but I made it out. As my grandpa and dad have always said, the easiest part of hunting is pulling the trigger. Congrats on the buck!
  17. Yeah sorry wasn’t implying it was easy. There’s some big dogs at my place and I’d like to disappear them. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  18. I need to get into yote trapping. Hunted them a few times with no success. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  19. Didn’t even need the safety harness. Congrats! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  20. Live from a lot more comfy than I was yesterday morning Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  21. Your cams are showing what mine are. Big guys in the wee hours of night. Anybody during shooting hours? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  22. Dang man, but anyone could have easily made that mistake, he’s barely a spike but the shot was good and you have meat in the freezer. Props for going out in the afternoon too, I was sort of considering a morning hunt but hanging a deer just drains me and all the clothes washing and what not haha. Good luck! 23. They’re pretty hard to find and sort of minimalist, which is kinda Honda’s thing and some people prefer but the deal breaker is their 2 latch tailgate. Just overly complicated and I could see getting annoying. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  24. the 2.5 vs 3.5 has always been the hardest for me. It's not always simple but a yearling can be generally easy and the >4.5 is generally pretty clear too. I may be odd here but sometimes it's the big breeder doe I wonder the most about or even a 1.5 vs 2.5 year old doe where the weight difference might only be 15-20 pounds.
