  1. I am home helping the wife getting dinner ready for the big meal. My wife had a stroke a few years back and now can't do some things without help, and a big meal for the family is one of then. Before her stroke I use to go hunting on thankgiving morning and be home in the afternoon for dinner. Not any more. At first light this morning I looked out back and there was a doe and two yearlings. They hung out for a few mins. and then walked off down into the woods. I have been in and out all morning and have not heard one shot. Even being in the house, if someone hunting out back shoots I can still hear them. I know that my neighbor and his brother are out there , so things must be slow because they are good hunters and keep things moving. I live in Broome Co., West Windsor, zone 7s and the hunting has been real slow from what I hear. I would like to know how the hunting is in other parts of the state and what zones?
  2. On Nov.30 the wife and I are headed to CA. to visit our son and his family. I want to tell you that our son works for the TSA. He is higher up and behind the scene and he knows what is going on. I was talking to him yesterday and asked him about the body pat downs and searchs. He told me ,not to worry because the only people that get patted down and searched , are the people that set off the alarms on the metal detectors and only after they are asked to take every thing out of their pockets and go through again and only then do they search and pat you down if you set off the alarm again. He told me that as long as you don't have some kind of joint replacement or are not wearing big baggy clothes, there won't be a pproblems. i don't care if they start to profile people, or want to do full body scans and or full body pat downs, if it means that it makes safer flying , then no one should complain, because if they don't do some of these or all of the things that need to be done ,there will be hell to pay if something should happen and then all the people who are complaining about it now, will be screeching for peoples heads to roll.
  3. First off, I want to tell you that I am strictly a trophy hunter, so the first thing I would look at would be his ears and if they were (3) three ins. or longer, BANG .
  4. Leave the deer seasons alone. I am a bowhunter and gunhunter. The bowhunters in my area want to be careful what they ask for. I have a neighber who will not let any bowhunters on his land. He feels that the bowhunters are taken all the bucks before gun season starts and he is not the only one that feels that way. I know people who will tell you to your face that the bowhunters are killing to many big bucks. Guess what, I have to agree. I am a bowhunter and I hunt on the ground, not out of a treestand. I take a buck every year with a bow and i can pick and chose my deer. Any bowhunter that doses his home work can do the same if they put in the time. To me taken a deer with a bow is much easier than with a gun. I have to laugh to my self when I hear someone say how much harder it is to take a deer with a bow than a gun. If most bowhunters would be truthful to them selfs and others ,they will agree. There is only (1) thing the DEC and state need to do is open up XBOW IN BOW SEASON and let others enjoy hunting at that time of year, because it is a great time to be in the woods. Other than that, leave the deer seasons alone.
  5. This pass Sunday I was talking to Paul from Reading,PA. He is up to our hunt club as a guest of another member. I asked what his thoughts were on PA's mandatory AR in PA. I was surprised by some of his answers. He told me that he had mixed feeling about it. PA has not only AR, but also HD in place (Herd Reduction) the shooting of does. PA wants to bring the deer herd more in to balance (bucks to does) . He told me that he hunts on private land that is next to SGL (State Game Lands). He said that before AR there were more deer ,but smaller bucks. Before AR he would see 15 to 20 deer in a day of hunting. Now with AR in place they are seeing fewer deer, but bigger bucks. Before AR they would take 6 or 7 bucks a year and a few does. With AR in place they take 1 or 2 bucks and 10 to 12 does. He said that on the SGL before AR the hunters would shoot out the deer herd and they wouldn't see any deer the SGL after season. Now with AR in place they are seeing a few deer left after season. What he told next is what surprised me. He said that the PA bowhunters put the pressure on the PA Game Comm. to bring in AR., they are the ones who really wanted it in place and pushed for it. He said the bowhunters are getting the most benefits from it. The bowhunters are taken most of the bigger bucks and the gun hunters are getting the left overs. In PA , part of the state has 3 points or better on one side and some parts of the state has 4 points or better. He said that the bowhunters are now pushing to have it 4 points on one side or better through out the whole state. We know that NY already has HD in place in parts of the state. Some days you are lucky to see a doe. Just take a look at the doe kill. The deer herd (does) is going down. Do we want AR in place to keep one small group of hunters happy. What do you think? Oh, yes I almost forgot that he said that the PA SGC. passed the crossbow hunting in bow season because it was to keep the gun hunters happy and off their backs. So come on lets hear your thoughts on this.
  6. My prayers go out to you and his family. He went doing what he loved.
  7. Booze and guns do not mix. Needing a drink to keep the cold out is a joke. Everyone knows or should know that alcohol thins the blood out and that is the last thing you want is thin blood when it is cold. Why don't you face it , the guy is a boozer. He may be a nice guy and all, but he still is a BOOZER. If he wanted to hunt with me ,I would tell to lose the booze or find someone else to hunt with. If you still want to hunt with him , tell him to drink that home or camp after the hunt is over and DO NOT bring it with him when hunting. This may sound a little stong for you,but then you are better off safe then sorry if something shoud happen and then it is to late to do something.
  8. Like .... some kind of over-weight, multi-pointed, grizzly-buck. That along with every other aspect of the season being perfect might rank up to a ten. I wouldn't expect too many "tens" in a lifetime. And I sure never want to the other extreme experience (a zero or a one) .... lol.
  9. I have hunted on the gound every year that I have been gun hunting and I am 67 years old . I started hunting deer when I was 16. I started hunting with a bow at (20) twenty. I hunted out of a treestand with a bow for about (15)fifteen years and found that was to easy for me so I got down out of the treestand and hunted on the gound with bow and never went back in a treestand. I have taken more than my share of deer with gun and bow on the ground, if I never take another one ,I still have taken more than my share. I am talking about taken buck ,not does. Just this morning I had a (4) point walk up to me, at (20) twenty yards and never knew I was there. I put the red dot on him and said to myself, bang your mine and let him walk away. I don't believe in AR, I feel it should be the individuals chose. I don't do anything special to cover my scent ,other than taken a shower. I don't use any scent to attract deer or cover scents. I hunt the wind, I like to hunt a cross wind. I don't use a pop-up blind. When I find an area I want to hunt, I look for old tree tops to hind in. If there are no tree tops around, I do carry a 4' x 12' camo nylon cloth and some rope with clothespins to hang it after tring the rope to some trees. I have used this setup for years and it works great for me.Hunters Specially sells the nylon net. It is very lite and easy to carry in a back pack. Try it out and I think you will like it. Luck and good hunting.
  10. On a scale of 1 to 10 how do you rate this years bow season so far. I know that mine was a 10 . I hunted only one and a half hours and took a nice 8 point.
  11. To thoses heading out this morning good luck and I hope you get the buck of you life time. Hunt safe and be happy. Life is good.
  12. Tomorrow is the opening of deer season in the southern zone. I live in shotgun area, and I am only (20) twenty min. away from rifle country. I don't know were I want to go hunting tomorrow. I own both rifle and shotguns that I have used to take deer in both areas. I know that if I stay around my home in shotgun area that the odds are in my favor to take a buck. I belong to a hunt club 20 min away in rifle country and have also taken deer there. There are more deer around my home than there are at the club land (1400 acres) to hunt. Around my home I have (500 acres to hunt) so it is not a question of finding land to hunt , but were I want to go. I have already taken a buck with a bow on the land by my home and I know that there is a real good buck up on the hill down the road from my house and very few hunters, only a couple locals. At the club we have 30 members and maybe 12 to 15 members will be hunting there, and I know there are fewer deer on the club land, but there are a couple BIG bucks there. Every year the club has a evening meal (pre-season supper) and every one will be there. I quest I will wait and see how many will be hunting the club land and decide then. What do you think?
  13. I remember when hunting licenses cost $1.25 Dick's Sporting goods was on upper court st. and was called Dick's sport shop and all he sold was hunting and fishing gear and a lot army surplus. If my memory is correct you could buy a surplus gun for $14.00. how times have changed. Sears, JC Pennys, and Montgomery Wards all sold guns along with a lot of Mom and Pop shops. A drag rope was really a rope. Treestands were wood nailed to a tree. Deer season was buck season. DMP,S were doe days iron sights is most people used and if you were lucky to have a scope it was a Weaver. We used a hand warmer that you had to use lighter fluid, no wonder we didn't see many deer. We shot deer slugs in our shotguns. Woolrich suits were the de rigeur of fashion when hunting. Fluorescent orange was unheard of. Sandwiches wraped in waax paper. Glass lined thermos that would break if you dropped them. paper shot shellsgun Deer tied to the top of cars. Let hear what you remember about the good old days, I know some of you have a lot tell us about them.
  14. erussell, If I am reading your post right ,you are using the adjustible strap that goes around your chest. You want to be very careful using that type. I know you live in broome co. and if you remember ,last year a hunter fell out of he treestand on North Road and was using that same type of strap. The strap compressed his chest and he was unable to get air and die hanging from the tree.
  15. Is it just me or are there others out there that feel the same way? I am talking about how the meat taste and also how much more tender from bow killed deer. I have hunted for many years and have taken many deer with gun and just as many with bow. I bone out and cut up my own deer. If I had to chose between a bow killed deer to one that has been killed with agun, I would pick the bow kill every time. To me they just taste better. What do you say ?
  16. The PA State Police have the shooter in custody, he was caught just before 10:00am this morning. He had been shot in the hip.
  17. Ours prayers to the family of the fallen officer, and we should not forget the family of the shooter. They had no part in this and will have to live with it forever.
  18. Police have named Christoper Lynn Johnson,27, as a person of interest in the shooting. John should be treated as armed and dangerous, police said. He may be injured and in need of medical treatment. They are searching for a 1999 blue Chevrolet 4x4 extended cab pickup truck with PA license plate VWC7472
  19. I just read on another site that they know who the shooter is. they don't want his name posted until they catch him. They did say that he lives near the shooting site.

  21. A PA game warden was shot and killed last night in Adam's County around 10:30 pm. The police are looking for a Blue 1999 Chevrolet pickup truck with licence plate number YWC7472
  22. I would say no. If she was in heat, the bigger bucks would run off the botton bucks. They would chase them off and would not let them any weres near the doe.
  23. Every year ,a month before bow season I pick up my bow and start shooting. I need to do this because if I don't , there would be no need for me to head into the woods when the season comes in. every day I practice shooting from 10 yards out 30 yards. I need to do this so that I can condition my muscles and to help me concentrate on what I am doing and to get the confidence I need to make a good shot. I have to do this. Last night , a friend of mine stopped in to see how things were going. As we were talking , he cell started buzzing. It was another friend of his who said he just in from hunting and at he got a nice 8 point. My friend asked him if he was home, and he answered ,yes. My friend said he would be there in a little bit. He asked If I wanted ride along to see it. I said sure ,why not. When we got there he took us out back to his shed to show us the buck. A really nice buck. I could see that he make a good hit. He said that the buck, only ran 30 yards after the hit and dropped. I asked if he had seen any other deer. He told me that today was his first day bow hunting and this was the first deer he saw and it was the first arrow that he had shot out of his bow this year. I asked, don't you practice any. He told me that shooting a bow was like riding a bicycle, once you learn , you never forget. On the way home I asked my friend, if his bubby was B S ing about not practicing shooting. He told me that he has never seen him practice and he has known him a long time.He also said that his friend dozes this every year. Unbelieveable , I could never go out hunting, without practicing. I would never have the confidence.
  24. I know many city hunters and also some from down on the Island and most of them are good people and I am happy to call them friends. Maybe I should have worded it different when I said the down staters were buying the land and posting it. Everyone knows that the pay scale is so much higher down state than it is up state and that is the reason people from around the city and the Island can afford to buy land up state. the people who own the land for sale always advistise down state because they know that is were the money is. When this happen it prices the up state people out of it. because they can not afford to pay the high price. I hope this clears things up.
  25. I feel killing a buck is easier with a bow before the rut, not during the rut. I have hunted on the ground for the last (20) twenty years, I don't hunt out of tree stands. To me that is to easy. Hunting is what one makes of it.
