Had a good sit this morning here in 7s . The rut is still going stong here. I had a buck running doe this morning. I can't say how big he was because he was chasing doe a hundred yards or so below me in the thick bush. All I saw was flashiests of them moving around and hearing them. This was at 7:30am .I waited ,but they would not come up the hill. About 8:30 am I heard something coming my way. and was hoping it was them ,but it turned out to be a big coon. I am going to have to call my brother to come over because I filled my buck tag on the first day and only have doe tags.

i consider myself a young old coot at 68 years young.. Tell us how old are you. Do you hunt as much today as you did when you were younger? I don't hunt as much as I use to ,but I think that I am a smarter hunter and use my hunting time more wisely. Do you hunt every day? I pick and choose the days I hunt now. When I was younger and still working, I would take the first week off and hunted come hell or high water, everyday no matter the weather, morning to dark. Do you walk in to your stand or do you ride in ?. I walk in to my stand and if I get luckly ,I walk out to my truck and go home and get my ATV and go back to get it., I live a half of mile from where I hunt. What season or seasons do you hunt when deer hunting ? I hunt with bow ,gun and ML. . What other seasons do you hunt? I hunt turkeys and deer only. So if you are an old coot ,tell us about yourself.

I just saw two deer run across my back yard . I can't tell you what they were because they were moving. I don't know if someone kicked then out down on the pipe line or a buck moved some doe out. The doe bed down behind my shed and if it was them, then it had to be a buck that pushed them out.I know the bucks are moving because I had a (6) six point come in behind me yesterday at 9:30 am with his nose to the ground.

I remember when I would never let a buck lay in the woods while I went to get help. The first buck that I got back in the late sixties was shot on the other side of the mountain from where my car was parked. It was a very warm Indian summer day and I had on the unform of the day. Woolrich plaid hunting coat and pants rubber boots and of course wool socks and hat.I had my lunch and coffee in my game pouch. I shot this buck at 8:00am that morning and after dressing him out and looking at the way to get him out.. The land that I got this buck I knew very well. I had two chooses, one I could take him across a small stream through 50 yards of woods to a field and then 200 yards to a back road.,and then go get my car. Not me ,I was not going to let this buck lay. Now I took off for over the mountain, By the time I got to my car it was 4:00pm and I was never so happy to see my car.I had dragged the hair off the one side of that buck. Fifty years later I would never do that. Now I have four wheeler and I let all my deer lay where I have dressed them out and go get my atv and i have done this for the last 15 years. The land I hunt is private , I am not the only one who hunts it. Some of the others I know and there are others who I do not. I have permission to ride my ATV on the land any time I want so I could ride it in to hunt if I want to. Where I go in is about a half of a mile from my house and I drive my truck to there and walk in to hunt and if I get one I walk out and go house to get my ATV and come back for my deer. I have never lost one and I have let some very nice buck lay. Sometimes it will take me hour or more to get back and have come back to find someone watching over it for me. To me I don't really care if some one wants it more than me, so be it. It is only a deer and I know that I shot it. This year on the first day I got a nice 8 point with heavy mass and very heavy bases. I am gressing in the 130s. I don't mount any of my deer or show them off,so I just don't care if someone wants it more than me.People ask me about pic. and I don't even do that anymore. Is there anyone on here who feel the same way? I just love to hunt and I don't have to kill something to be happy.

My day started when I left my truck at 6:30am. I knew that I had a 25 to 30 min walk to where I wanted to be.. I don't walk fast because I have taken deer on this walk before, I am always looking for sign and or movement. After ten mins into my walk I heard something and caught movement off to my left and before I could move there was a BIG coyote. ( I think maybe a male) He was only 15 yards from me and before I could get the gun up to take the shot ,he was gone.I am thinking not a good start for the day. I continue my walk. Not much sign around and things were not looking good in this part of the woods. I made it to my stand by 6:55 am and sat down. I always hunt on the ground, not out of a treestand. About 30 mins into my sit I heard something move in behind me and saw movement.coming my way. Getting my gun around a smaller coyote jumped up on a log at 20 yards and I put the hammer down on her. One shot and one coyote ( batting a thousand ) looking good. I continued watching down in front of me. another 20 mins into my sit I catch movement down in front of me and it is a deer walking along by its self. It picked its head up and I see that it is a nice buck. I find a opening out about ten yards in front of him and when he stepped in the opening I put the hammer down and he went about another 20 yards and went down. I could see him laying there so I gave him ten mins before I went to him to see how big he is. A real nice 8 point with heavy bases about 18 in. inside spread 10 in G2s . I am not big on scoring big ,but I would say in the mid 130s. Three or four years old . a nice deer. not my biggest ,but a nice deer.

If you got that Redfield at the same time you you got your gun, then you want to keep it. Back in 74 redfield was still a top of the line scope. I have for (4) Redfield scopes and are as clear as the day I got them.. I don't know which scope you have, but I know you will not be happy with any of the new ones when you compare them to an older Redfield. I have a Leupold at is one of there top of the line scopes and paid some good bucks for it and don't like it when comparing it my Redfields. All of my Redfield were gotten in the late 60 s and earty 70 s.

We have had a front loader for three years and I wash my hunting clothes using baking soda with no problems. The thing about HE soap is it dosn't make a lot of suds. When wasting with baking soda there are no suds so you will be ok. I hope this helps.

Dave I hear what you are saying about bowhunters being sensitive and I can understand why they feel this way. Now I have been hunting with a bow for years and when I tell someone that I bowhunt and they are not bowhunters ,they all tell me how hard hunting with a bow must be, Most people do not know what can be done with a bow and how deadly they can be In the hands of someone that knows how to use and shoot a bow. Now all the bowhunters hear this when talking to others who do not hunt with a bow. and they have come to believe this to make themselfs feel better and self important.

How did you know that was my nick name Ha! Ha! I really injoy a good laugh

I have hunted deer for many years with bow and gun. I don't hunt out treestands because I feel it is more of a challenge to hunt on the ground. I have taken many deer with bow out of treestands and about twenty five years ago .I said to myself that this is to easy and have hunted on the ground ever since. I started hunting with a bow back in the sixty's and still bow hunt today. What I have to say now ,I know some of you will disagree with me. I feel that as a bow hunter if you do your homework it is easier to take a deer with a bow than a gun. First off the deer are more relaxed and not spooked and therefor someone bow hunting gets more opportunities if they have done there homework.. I also know some people that bowhunt and can shot the eye out of a fly at thirty yards if it is on paper, but put a live deer in front of then at ten yards and they would be lucky to hit the barn door. The same is true with some gun hunters. I try to see both sides of the story and I have to agree with 308 on some things and I think I know where he is coming from. There are other bow hunters out there who would agree with me if they would be honest with them selfs. I am not the best shot with a bow ,but I know my limits and will not take a shot over twenty yards and like I said ,I hunt on the ground.I have taken some nice bucks with the bow and have not missed getting one in years. As far as crossbows, I am all for them. When it comes to AR ,I am against it. I feel that is up to the hunter who is doing the shooting. The bowhunters are the ones getting the big advantage when it comes to AR. Come on bow hunters now be honest about it. You know and I know that is true. That is all I have to say. Good luck to all and be safe..

Huge Buck Ithaca/Cayuga Heights 16 pt?
noodle one replied to HectorBuckBuster's topic in Bow Hunting
My son lived on Cayuga lake in Ithaca and let me tell you I believe that is a New York deer. If they ever open hunting in the city of Ithaca you would see a lot of deer of that size taken. I know what I am talking about because I have seen them myself. If you don't believe me ,just take a ride through and around Ithaca and see for yourself. Be careful if you ever are there at this time of the year because the bucks are running does all over the place and you will get to see some of the biggest buck that you will ever see in New York State. -
I just got off the phone with my son in CA. He was telling me that he has a bad cast of poison Oak. He has always had this problem with both the Ivy and Oak since he was little. If he even get close to it he brakes out. He told me that he has a Doctors appointment in two day but in the mean time it is starting to get to him. He has tried everthing. He told me that he always had good luck with (Zanfel , $40.00 for one oz.tube) It the only over the counter med that works for him, but not this time. He said that he has gone through two tube and it isn't helping. If anyone knows of anything that might help we would appreciate it. Thanks ,noodle one

I live in 7s which is shotgun only and only 20 min away from zone 40 which is rifle . I have both rifles and shotguns for deer hunting. I do most of my time in shotgun only country because I like the areas that I hunt better than in rifle country. For years I always used 12 GA. shotguns. Every year before season I would go out to shoot my guns to make sure they were still on target. When I was young i didn't mind shooting the 12 GA. but now that I am getting older I just hate shooting them and taking the beating from the kick from the 12 GA. For the last 4 or 5 years I have been telling myself that I was going to buy a 20 GA. About two weeks ago Dick's had A sale on a mossberg 500 with the rifle barrel and a ventiated rid field barrel with three chokes. Both barrels are ported and shoot 2 3/4 or 3in. The rifle barrel has an integral scope base and rings, plus a cheap scope. all for $299.00. I went down and got one. I have been very busy and have not had the time to get out to give it a try and hoping that I can get out this week to do so. Today a friend of mine called and wanted to know if I had any guns that I might want to sell , I told him that I had a Win 1300. 12 GA. 2 3/4 or 3in. rifled barrel shotgun for sale. He told me that he would be right up. When he saw the gun he asked why I was selling it and I told him that I was tired of having it kick the snot out of me every time I was just shooting it at a target and that I had got myself the mossberg 500 in the 20 GA. He told that he has another friend that got the same gun and that he loves it and was very happy with the groups he is getting with it.He told me that his friend was getting 3in groups out to a hundred yards. I have a Bushnell Trophy Multirecle Red/ green Dot that I am going to put on it to give a try this week. Has anyone else on here have the Mossberg 500 20 GA and how do you like it?.

Be careful what you wish for, because if this rain is an indication of what winter is going to bring, you better hang on to your socks because you are going to need every pair that you can get. By the end of Jan. and into Feb you will be wishing that you never made that wish..

Next week I will be 68 years old and hunting has been a big part of it as long as I can remember.I remember going for my hunter safety test and getting my first small game Jr hunting. license, if my memory is correct it cost $2.15. My first gun was a 410 (3in) single shot Stevens. I use to deliver newpapers and one of my customers had it and him and I would talk about hunting ever time I would go to collect for the paper. One day he showed it to me and it was love at first sight.I asked if he wanted to sell it and he told that he would never part with it. Every week that summer when I would see him I would ask about the gun and if he wanted to sell it. The answer was always the same (NO). I had given up asking about the gun, when one day in Oct. while collecting for the paper he answered the door with the 410 in his hand. He asked me if I still wanted to buy it. The answer was (YES) . He sold it to me for $10.00 . He told me that I only had to pay him a dollar a week.He also told me to take it home right now before he changed his mind. I never missed a payment. Now I was a complete hunter, my small game license in my pocket and my very own gun. I hit every small game animal and bird that I pulled up on. i loved that little gun. I just didn't miss with it. I had that gun for 20 years and sold it to a friend for his son. I sold that gun for $10.00 dollars, the same as I paid for it. To this day I wished that I still had that gun. When I turned 16 I became a big game hunter (deer) . It toke me 3 years before I shot my first deer(6 point buck) and after at I started getting a deer every year mostly bucks and a few doe. Today I can't remember the last doe that I got. I get one or two doe tags very year and never fill them. I hunt with bow ,gun and black powder I guess I am very lucky when it comes to hunting deer.because I take a buck every year with a bow , and have passed up many bucks with gun because I am looking for one that everyone is dreaming about. I have taken many nice bucks ,but not that one. I always hunt on the ground, not in a treestand. Every year I tell myself that I am saving the doe tags for black powder. and every year I pass up easy shots. When I get home my wife will ask if I had any luck and when I tell her no she thinks that I didn't have a good hunt. When I tell her I had a great hunt she looks at me like i am little crazy and tells me that I didn't get a deer so how can it be a great hunt. She just dosn't understand what makes a great hunt for me. I love being in the fall woods or spring turkey woods. To me hunting is not about killing something every time out and I am out more than most people. I love the sights, sounds, and the smell of the woods. I love watching all of gods creatures as they move about. I guess you could call me a loner when it comes to hunting. I like to hunt by myself alone. It's not that I dislike hunting with others, it that I hate hunting by their clock. When I go in the woods I don't know how long I will hunting that day. I hate it when my wife tells that I have to be home at this time or that. I hate when I am hunting with someone and he tells me that he need to be home or back to the truck by this time or that. I just hate hunting by the clock. The game that I hunting never carries a watch and that is how I am when hunting.I love the solitary of the woods. Some of my best thinking comes when sitting in the woods alone. I can make many problems disappear as I am sitting there and find many answers for many other things. I love the spring morning when The song brids are waking up and watching the day come alive and hearing the first gobble of the day. i love sitting in the fall woods in the fall with a chill in the air and with bow in hand while watching the leaves falling from the tree tops like snow and hearing the acorns dropping all around me. To see the first deer of the day coming up the trail. If I take a deer that day that is a bonus. I just love being in the woods and being a hunter.

Receational tax came about 15 or 20 years ago by Broome Co. when they were looking to get more money for the county. Now they can't say to you that they are going make you pay 10 % tax on your land and all the while all of your neighbors are only paying 7% assessed value of their property because that would be discrimination. All the assessors in the county got togetter and came up with a plan that called for higher assessment on property that is not your legal residence where you live or is not a working farm and was bought just for hiking hunting ,fishing or just running around on. What the assessers are doing is assessing your hundred acres of land at a higher property value than your neighbors hundred with a house on it that he lives in year round. when you go to grieven day on your property taxs the assesser is going to tell that he feels your land is more valuable than your neighbors and there is not to much you can do about it and he will make something up to prove it. When this first started all the locales called it the land recreational tax. You will not find any thing in the tax books about it ,but that how it is. The county and the assessers think that if you aford to buy land to play around on, then you can aford to pay a higher assessment on property value I am sure if you started looking around you would find that most county do this.

A little over ten years ago I was looking for land to buy for hunting. What I found made me think twice. First the cost of land . Then the taxs. When you buy land just for hunting , you have to pay recreational taxs on it. They are a lot higher then residential taxs. You can't put in a food plod and call yourself a farmer, It don't work that way. So I went with looking to lease land and found out that that all land that can be leased are not for use year round.(bad). Now I live in Broome county (zone 7) and today if you looking to buy land hold on to your hat. With all the gas co. buying up all the minerals rights and land rights , you may find some cheap land and wake up one morning and find a big time gas co .building a road by your camp across your food plod and over your no.# one tree stand. If you don't think this can happen you better think again because if they have the land rights they can do any thing they want. This has happen not to far from where I live. The people sold their rights to a gas co and never read the find print and woke up one morning with the gas co. building a road across their front yard and they could do nothing about it. I will tell you what I did that was to join a hunting club. It cost me $300.00 dollors a year for dues, plus two work weekends. out of four a year and to sell 200 50/50 or buy them myself. For this I get 1400 acre of land to hunt on , run my four wheeler , get fire wood and a camp to stay in any time I want for 365 days a year. I don't stay at the camp because it is only 15 min away and I like my own bed. I hunt deer there and turkeys and it is just a good place to go to and have some good times with the guys.. .

solfather, Before I retired I hunted after work many days with out having the time to shower. The best thing I found to cover body scent. was and still is baking soda. You want to make sure that it is fresh , no older than a month.I would carry a box of it in my truck and when I got to my hunting ground, I would use it like talcum powder. I would put in my hat, behind my ears and in my hair. I would open my shirt and cover my front and back.I also would put it down my pants in my shorts and down my leggs. I was a plumber and some days I couldn't stand myself after a day at work. Believe when I tell you that baking soda is the best to cover human scent. Better than anything in the hunting world. Give it a try and let me know what you think.. I bow hunt on the ground and have for the last 30 years and have taken many buck at 15 to 20 yards and have many walk up to me with in 5 yards. It is the only thing I use to this day...

The anchor point for shooting a bow is the same as the rear sight on a gun. if you want to shoot good groups, you need to line the rear sight with the front to be on every time. One needs to use the same anchor piont every time to be consistent. I don't shoot my bow all year round and only start shooting a month and a half before archery season and every year I use to have had the same problem finding a comfortable piont for my anchor.I have tried kisser buttons and never liked them. I have used my thumb behind the ear and or a finger to the corner of my mouth. I have even used the string on the tip of my nose. Every year I have gotten a deer with my bow and still not feel comfortable with my anchor point. Four years ago I started using the fletching on my arrow in the corner of my mouth and now I can pick up my bow and be shooting groups in five min. For me this feels the most comfortable and it puts my anchor in the same spot every time and has made me more consistent. What is your anchor piont that works for you?

Just wondering if anyone else on here shoots a High Country bow.I am on my third one now and love it. The one I have now is the Carbon four runner. Top of the line bow. I have been watching on here for someone to talk about them and have not seen any.I know they are very popular out west. I do know that dealers are few and far between here in the east. because they come out of the state of Wash. If you ever come come across one you may want to check them out, you will not be disappointed
