Antler Restrictions - voluntary or otherwise
Four Season Whitetail's replied to Curmudgeon's topic in Deer Hunting
There was a big 9pt taken within a mile of your place just this morning.. I could name at least 10 guys in your area that will not take anything less than a mature buck. You have a handful in that area that ruins a great hunting area for all involved. Wives and kids tags. Unlimited bucks. You name it and they have it covered. -

Just the reason i hunt where you will not see another person and if you do....He is a real hunter and would never do the things you mention. -
I checked tonight for the first time ever i believe as to when sunset was down here where im hunting and it was an easy 20 minutes after that before i could not take an ethical shot with my bow and then another 10-15 minutes before it was totally to dark even with lighted sights. Sunset is a very stupid Ny law. Goes right along with the rest i guess!

You do realize that we are in Ny state right. These things you list would never happen. I would also say that the few on here that try and make it sound like they are saints are..Well Whatever, But when we talk after legal time and bow hunting we are talking a matter of minutes. To walk out of the woods at the best time to be in the woods to harvest a buck that the only time you may get that buck is stupid at best. This could go back on us few that like and only will kill mature deer.
-
Ya you still got that number?
-
Yup im with ya and will continue untill Ny gets their heads out of...Well lets just leave it at im with ya!

Awesome. We all have to start somewhere. You will go through a number of stages in your hunting lifetime.

Great season for sure. Im sure you can find someone that has need for some good winter protein.

Awesome buck. Congrats!

Yes sir you are right...to a point! The biggest, oldest bucks still know they need to be on the bottom at daylight. When a mature buck locks down a doe for breeding he will not do that in open hardwoods where you can see 100 yards through the woods. He will force her away and into the thickest places he knows and in this case...The Bottom. Those deer are bred to know its..Top at night for food and bottom by day for safety. Thats put into them from birth. Thats where alot of hunters mess up because they see all the sign at the top near the open fields but thats kinda like hunting over a scrape on a wide open field edge. The chances of seeing that buck in daylight is about nill but drop over the edge 300 yards and that ole boy is happy chasing does back and forth from east to west and back again.

Myself its a hand cart with a 1000ft cable winch welded to it and powered by a deep cycle battery, Strap the cart to a tree, throw the cable over the edge and up the come. No muss,No fuss. If your down there in the next 10 days you can see it work....I Hope!

They drove right past a deer farm on their way. We are about 45 miles away.

You have males and you have females. Most every hunter has a buck tag in his pocket wishing for the biggest tree thrasher in the woods. Pretty simple. -

This is your statement says it all....You cant tell me that about every hunter does not wake up at 4am in the morning thinking about killing the biggest beast in the woods. And about every second sitting there freezing their butts off. Yes they may take a lesser animal if the chance happens along but they are wishing for the very same animal that i, the trophy hunter, as you say does. The only difference is that i wont accept anything less than a trophy at this point in my hunting life. Does are a givin and are not even included in the word hunting for me. I harvest does and hunt trophy bucks, as many i know do. -

LOL..Agreed and the folks that were doing the website were raping us and being one of the biggest in the state and a demand within our own state that i dont have enough animals to fill orders for i dont see the need to spend the money to have a site. 300 inch animals tend to get the word out in the..Biz- -

But as you see above that thats what everybody talks about. i dont hear to much talk about 7 93 inch bucks taken? But you start talking 150 and Boom...Look at all the interest. Many use the wording...Oh im not a trophy hunter and for most thats because they have never takin one. But like it or not, for 99.9% of hunters its all about the bone but many wont admit it. In all my years on this hunting site i have yet to see anyone write that they are going out hunting and looking to kill that big 3pt they have been seeing. Just dont happen. -

No you missed my point Stevie. Point being they have time and places to grow up and show their potential. They(The Deer) have all those things going for them there that allows they to reach a mature age. In most parts of Ny it would take a law to get the same thing across...Age! -

Point is that the hunter is doing the hunting..Not the dog. Just because they did not kill an animal does not mean the hunt was fair chase. You say if its legal its ok to do. Well thats fine and everybody has their own thoughts on what is fair chase but running dogs is the least fair chase hunting in my book. Like someone else says, this is just allowed so they can harvest animals and balance the population. -

Thats because they have places to grow up. Thats awesome and with a little self control or a new law all of Ny state could be just like that. But we know thats a whole new thread. Great for those boys! -

Yea there ya go..Spin things...Its legal to high fence also and i would say more sporting than walking behind a pack of dogs that are hunting for me but if thats what makes ya feel good because its in some book then have at it but its far from fair chase in many hunters eyes. Its killing and population control yes but lets call it what it is without the sugar. -

A wild Maine bear can only run so far with dogs on his AZZZZ and that is far from fair chase. You see it all depends how you few like to put a spin on things. As long as you feel good about it then its fine but if someone else does the same kinda thing with just a different animal, they get their panties in a bunch. I chased coons for years and that was a blast but was it hunting? Was it fair chase? I think that answer would be .............................. The farthest from it! If i go to the bottom of Letchworth and kill a buck on his terms then i hunted..If i send a dog down there to run his butt up to me or untill he can run no longer...Yeah BIGGGGG Difference! -

Amazes me how some on here can call this fair chase but high fence is not. Would we still be ok with it if we took the bear out of the picture and put Bambi in there? I think not for most. -
