  1. Steve 863...Doewhacker...Wooly...I think it's time to warm up... And a ONE and a TWO.......KUMBAYA, My LORD..KUMBAYA....
  2. If you have the itch to try something else, try the full caliber conicals made by www.noexcusesbullets.com. I used PRBs in my old TC hawken for years with good results, A few years back I wanted to work up a heavier elk load for my rifle, since .50 round balls are a little light for elk. The 460 grain noexcuses conicals shoot great and load easier than the roundballs. I killed a nice 6X6 elk with them and have continued to use them here for deer. Not surprisingly, they kill deer just as well as elk . My pet load shoots flatter than you might think, for such a heavy bullet. Sighted about 2" high at 50, I am dead on at 100. Since I shoot iron sights ( tang peep sight) that is about the limit of my range, anyway.
  3. Fasteddie...How about a popcorn omelette..?..
  4. My, what an easily understood and articulate post ! Have you and your little brother been sniffing that glue again ?
  5. With my old eyes, regular V notch open sights are useless anymore... However, a peep sight still works well... I use peeps on my Hawken .50 cal. and my M-1. One DISADVANTAGE of a peep is that it does not work as well in real low light conditions. The best alternative though IMHO would be a ligtweight, low power scope . 2.5 or 3 x would be perfect, and once you get used to it, you'll find it's better and faster for moving targets than your open sights. Actually, I have a 1.5-4X Leupold that would be a great scope for a light single shot, but I'm not sure I want to part with it. I also have a Burris compact 4X, but I consider 4X borderline overpowered for close cover hunting. It will work, but a 2X or 3X works that much better.
  6. Dave..Do you suppose he EATS thier antlers and puts thier BALLS on the wall ? I have heard the expression " Balls To The Wall", but I never knew it was taken LITERALLY....
  7. I understand what you are saying and agree that it is not ideal.. Nevertheless, it is more COMMON than uncommon. Every bolt action .22 rimfire I have ever handled is that way and many other action types have thier idiosyncrasies also. Many guns with exposed hammers require lowering the hammer on a chambered round in certain instances. Some French military rifles don't even HAVE a safety catch. It all boils down to knowing your firearm and handling it in the safest manner possible in accordance with the design.
  8. Hmmmmmmm... If Growalot were a deer.........
  9. Paula....I've been told that my brain is filled with totally useless facts ...
  10. Having to disengage the safety to unlock the bolt is very common. As Steve said, older Remingtons were that way. Tang safety Ruger 77s are that way. My CZ-550 is that way. This applies to rifles with a rocker-style safety. One notable exception is the mauser style 3 position safety, which is incorporated in the Win M70, Ruger Mark II, and some others. Simply point the muzzle at the ground, release the safety and open the bolt to clear the action, then empty your magazine.
  11. Phade..Are you suggesting that the OP is not one of the smart ones...?? I agree....He may be one of the highly skilled and arrogant ones..I know a few of those guys and I do not not want to dismiss thier hunting skills. They are generally a pain in the ass to put up with though.. He also may be one of the LUCKY ones, who kills a big buck or two and decides that he is a superior hunter... They are even MORE of a pain in the ass to tolerate.
  12. You're not blind, Girlfriend...That's a red squirrel....
  13. We understand, Darlin'... A girl always wants to look her best. We are glad to have you come sing with us... We're gonna have to wait a while though.. It's time for my nap.
  14. Actually, that pretty young lady reminds me of one of my old girlfriends. Good Ol' Mabel Nerdberger. What a woman..She would have been durn near perfect except for her hairlip, cauliflower ears and that embarrassing feminine hygiene problem. Mabel and I had some high times <wink>... We'd probably still be together if she hadn't run off with that damn Greek Vaseline salesman....Slippery SOB.....
  15. LMAO...!!! I'm so glad GROW decided to join us ! I see that SHE can handle the baritone, while I sing soprano. Grow, Sweeheart...I just LOVE the peek-a-boo zebra skin dress..!!.. Did you shoot it YOURSELF ??..
  16. Kwazy WABBIT...hehehehehehe....
  17. Thanks for the offer Skillet, but I don't think you are my type. But then again, at my age, I don't get many OFFERS either... I suppose there ARE advantages to being bisexual.. For one thing, it effectively DOUBLES your chances of getting a date on any given Saturday night.. Nawww...I just can't compromise my high standards. I have always required two things of prospective partner. A vagina and a pulse...
  18. Yeah, Dave, I caught that too... Of course, I wasn't going to mention that my barber's third cousin told me that he was hunting out of one of those quasi-legal deluxe heated tower stands, nor the fact that he allegedly had an improper relationship with Stevie Wonder's seeing eye dog. It just wouldn't be right. Now I REALLY think it's time for my nap.
  19. Hey Wooly....Can you SING ? Maybe Doe and Steve will let you join our trio and sing "Kumbaya"... Woops...Then we'd be a quartet... I get so confused sometimes... I think it's time for my nap. Has anybody seen the NURSE..??..
  20. Congratulations on a very nice bear . Bears, like people, vary a lot in size from one individual to another. Yours was a very nice, typical adult bear, and you have reason to be proud . Good job, young feller... Enjoy your well earned trophy.
  21. What kind of ammo have you got ?? I might be interested in it... Damn shame giving perfectly good ammo away to the police...
  22. Browning has always made a quality gun. I've owned several over the years and currently have 2, a Belgian A-5 Light Twenty and a Citori Field Grade 12. Friends of mine who use Browning Golds for waterfowl and turkeys love them. One quality you'll appreciate will be lighter recoil with slugs and heavy shot loads. Felt recoil will be about half of what your 870 is.
  23. Thanks for the info, Steve....I had heard the term "Castrato" before, but I always thought someone was talking about the Cuban Dictator's Italian cousin ! That's why I love this forum. I learn SO much from you guys. Now if Growalot would only tell us a STORY my day would be complete.
  24. I applied in Maine for about 20 years. Not only did I not draw, but I don't personally know anyone who DID draw. Odds keep getting worse every year. I applied in New Hampshire and Vermont for a few years also. At the time, odds were best in NH ( about 1 in 30) and Vermont was a little worse. Never drew either of them. Odds of drawing a PA elk tag are about like getting struck by lightning at the same instant you win the lottery, especially if you are a non resident. They typically give out 4 or 5 NR tags among THOUSANDS of applicants. I'm not trying to discourage you..You can't win if you don't play, but don't be surprised if it takes to years to draw, if ever. The only tag I currently apply for is New Brunswick moose. Odds are usually about 1 in 20 for NR and I have drawn one tag in ten years of applying. If you REALLY REALLY want to kill a moose, save your $$$$ and go to Newfoundland. If you REALLY REALLY want to kill a moose with a big rack, save even more $$$$ and go to Alaska or western Canada. Good luck !
  25. Hey Doe, are you and Steve getting tuned to sing " Kumbaya" yet...? I'd like to offer my lovely voice...We can be a trio. I sing soprano, by the way... I used to sing baritone until that unfortunate incident when one of my old girlfriends decided to help me "trim up" my bikini line with a weedwhacker.
